We stayed at the Kantary for 7 nights in May 2014 and really enjoyed our visit.
There is no official start rating in Thailand and the resort owners literally pick a number however this hotel is, in my opinion, worthy of the promoted 4 star rating.
Our check-in process was smooth and the Staff were very polite and helpful, the welcome drink was well received after our transfer from Phuket airport in a VIP Minibus organised by the Hotel.
The room was first class. Big, super clean with everything you need. We had a balcony area and a lovely bathroom. Housekeeping did a great job too. We were lucky in that we were in the closest building to the main Restaurant. Suite A was the building name should you wish to request it.
Food was good too - my only comment is that the selection of thai dishes is quite limited with perhaps only 1 page out of 8 or 9. The food always arrived quickly and was tasty. A little more expensive that the local places but it was not expensive in general - around £3 - £5 for a main course.
Darren, the Guest Relations chap was great at pointing us in the right direction and was very friendly with lots of local knowledge. WIFI is free in the public areas but you have to pay extra (£3 per day) if you want it in the room which I thought wasn't great.
The beach is fantastic, probably 1 mile long and beautiful sand. There were several sign up warning of Jelly Fish but we didn't see any apart from a couple on the beach. Also, the pool was very nice and quiet. All adults with no kids running around.
This Hotel is a little out of the way, perhaps 20 mins from the Khao Lak centre. taxis are VERY expensive and although the Hotel did run a paid for shuttle service (£2 pp each way) we hired a motorbike (ask Darren) which was great. We don't drive a bike back home but the roads are pretty quiet and its literally a straight road all the way in.
We found an incredible Restaurant (Hut in the Jungle) called Tik's which is owned and run by a thai family. We went there every day for lunch or dinner and the food was incredible. We eat thai food alot and I lived here for 2 years - this is the best thai food I have ever had and it was very, very cheap - around £1 - £3 for a main course. When my girlfriend asked for fish Tik said they didnt have any but would catch one for us tomorrow. Amazing. It is about 5 mins drive on the bike from the Kantary - look up Rawai Thai Boxing School and it is 50m before it on the right.
Would I return to the Kantary - yes, absolutely. The Hotel is really good and Khao Lak is a quiet but lovely place. Happy customer indeed.
