“Spacious room, quiet location, cleaned beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

This is the 1st time that I visit Khoa Lak and I would like to stay at hotel which located in a quite place and Kantary Beach the right one. Hotel is far from city but there is a local transportation service outside hotel gate.

Hotel is located in a quite place. My room was spacious but bathroom need to renovate. There is a bathtub and shower zone. There is no blind or shower screen at shower zone and that made water splash everywhere.

Breakfast was fantastic, had everything I need

Compare price that I paid & services that I got. This is a good choice

Room Tip: Choose the buiilding near the sea

After 6 days in Phuket we didn't think Khao Lak could beat it - how wrong were we?! On arrival we met Darren, the guest relations manager who was from Engand - it was really nice having someone who could speak to us properly and he gave us lots of advice on places to go and things to see. He gave us a map and marked off the best waterfall, and basically answered every question we had! He also gave us a spare room card so we could keep the air con on, which was a massive blessing!! Throughout our stay, whenever we saw Darren he would always make time to speak with us and help us out with anything we needed. We then met DJ (James) who worked on the front desk. He was the nicest, most amazing person we've ever met! Very polite and always full of compliments, and his English was outstanding! We looked forward to going to the lobby just to speak with him!

We were taken to our hotel suite (which turned out to be one of the best rooms in the hotel because of the view!) - we were expecting a room and an en suite, but were completely surprised to find that we had a living room, bedroom, bathroom and a big terrace with the most amazing view of the beach! We arrived just after the 'tourist season', so the resort was lovely and quiet! The beach has to be the best beach we've ever seen, there were signs making people aware of the jelly fish, but unless you swam right out, they weren't really a threat - plus if they did sting, there was always someone on hand close to the beach to help out!

The pools were great, and again, most days there was no one else there! The breakfast was absolutely lovely and had tiny perks that our hotels in Bangkok and Phuket didn't have - Lurpack butter, sweetners and a better selection of fruit, bread and yoghurts. We ate at the hotel for 3 of our nights, and each time the meals were outstanding and excellent quality (and the price was extremely reasonable) - the best Calzone I've tried and the steak was amazing! As were the omelletes for breakfast, we didn't think they would beat the ones we had in Phuket but somehow these were even better!

The Otter Bar was always very quiet - happy hour was 7pm-8pm and most nights we would go, just for the view of the ocean really! There were a lot of insects everywhere, but the staff members were on hand with repellent! The catering manager Tu was such a friendly and happy person, he couldn't do anything more for us! He even bought us a drink on our last day, which we thought was so lovely of him, and because we were leaving at 6am, he made sure there was a breakfast box waiting at reception for us so we didn't go hungry! On day 4 our fridge decided to pack up, and all our ice melted and our drinks were all warm. We spoke with DJ on the front desk, and by the evening we had a new fridge in our room - excellent service!

Just outside the hotel to the left is a bar simply called 'The Bar' - be prepared to take insect spray, but with cocktails at 99b and great music, definitely a must if you're on your way back to the hotel!

We hired mopeds for 4 of the 6 days (from another amazing person Fern) and got to explore Khao Lak. We paid 250b a day, which works out less than £4! We went up Chong Fa Waterfalls (and I fell all the way down, broke my camera and was covered in bruises, but all worth it!), swam with elephants in a lagoon by Posiedon Bungalows, horse riding, went to the evening market which was great - but the one place that really hit home was the Tsunami Museum. We found the memorial park on day 2, and there is the police boat there, and we thought that was it. It wasn't until the 4th day that we found the actual museum in a shop about 200 metres up the road. It was so upsetting watching the videos that showed what the locals and tourists had to go through, we can't believe how happy and friendly they are after that!

All in all, Khao Lak was the best, life changing experience we've ever had, and we are already saving to come back to Kantary Beach next year! We have been home a few days now and already feeling 'homesick' and miss Kantary Beach and the staff!

Room Tip: All seemed lovely but having a view of the sea is definitely a bonus, especially when there is a goo...

Your positive mention of outstanding staff, by name and position, as well as our helpful general staff has not gone unnoticed and has been shared with them. This was the 2nd year we stayed at Kantary Beach and it was just as amazing as the first time!
All of the staff were amazing, in particular, Darren Agnew-Guest Relations, who helped us with all the added requirements like hiring a moped, and the best places to see and eat! He is very professional and helpful. Also worth noting were Food and bevarage manager Tu, and Mam, the General store manager are such beautiful friendly people who made every day so much more enjoyable with there welcoming smiles!
The Hotel grounds are lush and green, and well maintained. They have multiple pools and all well maintained. Food in the restaurant that also serves the buffet was some of the best cooked i have eaten anywhere and im ex chef so big congratulations to all of the kitchen staff for there work, VERY well done.
As this hotel is out of town, i suggest hiring a moped for 200b a day and get around easily on this into town and out to the surrounding sites and into town.
this hotel shows it cares about its customers, and cares about your needs as if anything is required they are straight onto it, no problems!
I love this hotel, we hire a freestanding villa, and they are very clean and modern with all the amenities including an extra outside shower which is just great!
I suggest bringing some mozzy spray and coils as Thailand has alot but to no fault of the hotel of course, who also take measures to rid the grounds of them.
The beach is beautiful and long, with not to many people around which gives a great feel of having the place to yourself!
The hotel also sponsored a group of orphans from Phuket to stay in the hotel for 3 days and I thought that was very nice of them, just shows you the caring nature of staff and managment.
We will be back again for sure, i cant really fault the place to be honest, and the staff are incredible!
Thanks to all of you who take good care of us when we were there x

Room Tip: the freestanding villas are amazing! get one in the middle so your close to everything but dont get...

Where to begin, how about the staff, because really this place gets the 4-5 stars, in my opinion due to the staff.
Darren, gust services, in the old days of Thailand many of the up scale hotels had an english speaking, usually a Brit on staff. Darren being Brit and not liking the cold anymore works here and is a great addition. Helped us get settled in and smooth over any bumps that there were.
All the front desk staff, again, in typical Thai fashion ALWAYS greeted you with a Thai smile. as we walked the grounds and hotels corridors we were always greeted by housekeeping staff. One of the hardest jobs in a hotel these people never failed to greet us, even from afar with a wah and a smile.
Finally Mr Tu, the food and beverage manager in the restuarant, WOW! So friendly and warm, always as if you were family. And so personable, he didn't just greet you he engaged you and wanted to know how everything was, without fail. This was like Thailand of 25 years ago, so good to know it is still around.
You can have a Great hotel resort be only a 1 star or a 1 star hotel be 5 star, it comes down to staff. And this staff was well trained, sincere and genuine. We stayed for 4 nights.

The rooms were comfortable, cool, AC worked great and we needed it. WIFI worked great/ Buffet breakfast was pretty good, eggs to order, bacon, pastries pancakes, fruit and juices.
Pool was refreshing although notter than expected due to the weather. Beach was clean and tidy. And you can rent a motorbike from Fern in the reception area for convenience.

Had a great stay, again, manily due to the great staff.

Good job!!
We'll be back

Room Tip: Book ahead and get a villa

The Kantary Beach, Khao Lak, looks forward to your soonest return and thanks you for your thoughtful appreciation of our great staff, some by name and position, which has been shared with them. As you noted, the attentiveness and concern experienced 25 years ago has not completely disappeared and can be found with our current staff. Thank you for your informative commentary which should be useful to any readers planning a stay with us.

We stayed at the Kantary Beach between 22 April and 4 May 14. The hotel was quiet due to the low season kicking in and was only about 30% full. We had a Villa that had a separate lounge and bedroom, which were both air conditioned and was modern in design. There was a TV in each room as well as full size fridge and microwave. The bathroom was good with a full size bath as well as an enclosed external shower that you accessed via the bathroom. There was a King size bed that we found very comfortable. There was wi-fi in the bedroom at a cost, although it was free in the public areas.
As we were on a Bed & Breakfast basis we thought the breakfast set up was very good, with plenty to suit all tastes and nationalities.
The staff in the restaurant were very friendly, although they could be a bit slow in responding if you wanted a drink or something else. However this is a minor point and should not be taken as a major criticism.
We found the food in general to be very good indeed and had no complaints whatsoever.
Because of the start of the low season we never had any problems in getting a sun bed either on the beach or at the swimming pool.
The beach itself was stunning as were the sunsets, and often seemed deserted, there were no beach vendors allowed on the beach. Also there were no jet skis or speed boats buzzing around. If its peace and quiet on a beach you want, then this is the place.
The hotel itself has a mini market which provided the usual items, there was also an ATM if you needed cash.
The location of the hotel was approximately 6 miles from Khao Lak, which could be reached via the hotel shuttle or taxi (about 300 Baht- £6)
We took part in a Thai cooking course at the hotel which we both enjoyed, the staff did everything they could to make the experience a good one, and we both felt well looked after. We would recommend this activity.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kantary Beach and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

I stayed here for a week at the end of April - beginning of May ; it was rather good in general - the hotel itself, staff, breakfast , pools etc ( see all reviews below ) . But there are several things which made my vacation , hmm, rather unpleasant.

1. Jellyfish - there are plenty of them in the sea so it's almost impossible to swim in the ocean.

2. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and they don't have any pharmacy next to it; moreover , first aid room is also closed from May,1! Taking into account that children are allowed from 1st of May too ,it looks a bit imprudent. So if you (suddenly) sunburn, or have diarrhea or constipation there will be no help for you here. I sunburnt rather badly during my stay and all the staff could do for me was just smiled and advised me to take a taxi and go to Khao lak to a pharmacy.

3. As a result of being far from town it's impossible to buy fruits there. No kiosks and they don't sell fruits in minimart. So you need to take a taxi or shuttle to the town which is expensive.
Overall , my stay here was ok in general but I recommend to think twice before booking this hotel.

The Kantary Beach, Khao Lak, welcomes your sharing of your observations with us and our readers after your recent stay with us. In clarification, ALL of our guests are able to swim in either swimming pools or the Andaman Sea, or both, while the ‘Jellyfish Warning’ is posted as a caution to swimming in the Andaman Sea during their presence. Guests concerns are readily addressed by contacting our Guest Relations Manager or our Duty Manager immediately whenever it is felt by guests that such concerns have not been properly addressed by our staff. Also each and every staff member has a name and identification, just as all of our guests have names and identification. A hotel shuttle service is available for the approximate 20’ minute trip to the centre of the nearby town while public taxis and other transport are also readily available for this same journey. Locally, in the immediate environment there are retail outlets able to supply some of our guests needs. ALL guests and potential guests are advised to consult our website for further familiarization with our location and the nearby town and may also contact me directly at: gm@kantarybeach-khaolak.com Responsibility in the hospitality business is taken seriously by all of our management and staff. To clarify the false and mistaken impression, created by some, a stay with us at the Kantary Beach, Khao Lak, is not an adventure stay in a dangerous, exotic, isolated, out of-the-way location on the frontier of nowhere, serviced by an uncaring, unconcerned, unhelpful, and indifferent to the health and safety of our guests, staff. With more familiarization and knowledge of our location, the nearby town, and nearby retail outlets, your soonest return for another stay with us again soon is welcomed. Thank you for your observations.

This was our second visit and once again it lived up to our high expectations. The whole experience of staying here was five star. The villa units are lovely, the pools are well looked after as are the restaurants and surrounds. But what makes this hotel stand out is the staff. The restaurant staff - Alice, Mr Tu and Mem - couldn't have made us feel more welcome. The Customer Liaison Manager - Darren - also bent over backwards to make sure we didn't want for anything. Keep doing what you're doing Darren, there are some who could learn from you. Since our first stay, and our second subsequent stay, no other hotel can quite come up to scratch. We will continue to recommend as often as we can.
