“A place we wish to return to!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2010

My husband and I stayed 9 nights at this lovely hotel. Usually we feel like moving on after staying a week in one place, but not with this hotel - we enjoyed it so much.

We chose a pool view room, one floor up from the pool access rooms, and were happy with that choice. The room was beautiful, with hardwood floor and plenty of closet space. The king bed was a bit firm for us, but the hotel provided a nice thick top pad on request, that really helped a lot. We thought the DVD player was a nice touch for rainy evenings - the reception had a small movie selection too. The bathroom had a large rain shower separate from the bathtub. There was a roomy balcony with two chairs and a comfy daybed.

The breakfast buffet was among the best we have seen. All the "standard" western breakfast foods, plus lots side dishes and Thai dishes that kept changing from day to day. An abundance of fresh fruits, also with some variation from day to day, a real barrista who knew her stuff... And friendly, efficient waiters. A very, very good start, every single day!

We had dinner in their Japanese, Thai and Mediterranean restaurants. The Japanese one was good, I went back for seconds of their excellent makis. We enjoyed the Mediterranean too, but thought the portions were on the small side. For instance, their starter with hoummus and baba ganosh came with one spoon (literally!) of each. The food we had in their Thai restaurant was okay, but not very interesting. Of course the prices are higher than in town, but not extremely so.

The beach chairs were comfy and the waiters kept coming by with ice water and fresh fruit, courtesy of the hotel. Excellent service and also very helpful people. When I had a run-in with a jellyfish that left a nasty rash on my leg, one of the waiters disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a concoction of vinegar and some local herb. It was amazingly efficient, the pain stopped as soon as he put the stuff on my leg and after 15 minutes the rash was invisible. It was so kind of him.

We tried the two-hour Thai fusion massage at the hotel spa and enjoyed it. The spa prices were ca. 5 x higher than on the beach or in the small local spas, but the spa area is gorgeous and the staff make you feel like a queen, so it was absolutely worth it.

I also had a Thai massage on the first beach place to the right of the hotel. The woman there finished with this neat chiropractic trick - the POP! was so loud, we both laughed - it fixed the shoulder that had been bothering me for months before the vacation. Now that is excellent value for 250 baht! Give them a try, they were nice people and they sure can use the business.

The truly unique feature of this hotel is the pool. I read somewhere that it is one of the largest in Asia. It is like a lagoon that meanders around the hotel buildings, surrounded by greenery and with some shade along the way. In two places it widens to more "normal" pools, complete with pool bars. If you swim the full round, I think it must be a kilometer long. We loved it and did the round every afternoon. The fitness center was also a nice experience, quite large, absolutely clean and well equipped including free weights.

The hotel offers a shuttle service to town and you can also book pickup there. Prices were reasonable. We used this service twice, the first was perfect, but on the second one they did not come to pick us up. It was annoying, but considering they had a 200-guests Indian wedding that evening, I suppose misunderstandings can happen. We got an excuse from the front desk manager, but had to remind them again upon checkout to take the missed pickup off our bill. That was the only glitch during our stay. Considering they surprised me with cake in our room at my birthday, I am more than willing to forgive the missed pickup...!

To sum it up, this is one of the most enjoyable hotel stays we have had, and I can only warmly recommend this hotel. I am pretty sure we are going return to the Marriott Khao Lak in a couple of years or so.

We live in Bangkok and usually only go to places we can drive to like Hua Hin or Khao Yai, but this hotel was recommended by friends who had been there so we took the trip to Phuket. We were picked up by the hotel limousine and arrived an hour later at this spectacular place. It is the nicest hotel I have been to, the view from the lobby was so amazing that we didn't even want to go to the room! Impressive buildings and the best beach I have seen besides Similan! The staff are so nice and did everything for us. We stayed the whole week in the hotel without leaving because they have so many different restaurants and the prices are very reasonable. My favorite was the Italian and Japanese where the chef did a great show to impress us. And for Thai food we will definitely come back to the Takrai, it's so nicely done and the food tastes real Thai! Our room was huge and had the best bed I have ever slept in. We are trying to buy the same one right now. My boyfriend was crazy about the telephone and Internet systems, and the reception gave us DVD's to watch in the room. We have a fitness center in our Condo, but the Marriott one was much better, even more than any club or studio! All the machines are brand new and you can watch TV on every one of them, and it's full of day light with a view to the pool which was nice too. We used it everyday and got great drinks from the shop in front of it. We also swam the pool a few times, it is so long, the staff told us it's the longest in Asia, incredible how they keep it clean...The last comment I have is the spa, it's at the beach and the treatments were so relaxing and professional! I have a spa myself and would probably hire the lot of staff from the Marriott. The beach places outside of the hotels are usually 'ok', but not professional and the ladies sometimes don't know how to treat you propery. If you are looking for a really good therapy, the Marriott spa was excellent! All in all, we loved our stay and will definitely come back with friends again.

I had not even seen pics of the hotel, but somehow there was a gut feel it would be good. To my surprise it turned out to FABULOUS!!! everything, from the room, the level of detail, of providing cookies every evening, to posting our agendas, was abs fantastic. It was our Honeymoon, and we couldn't have asked for anything more. The pool is huge, plenty of beach beds available. We stayed at the duplex suite, and it was worth every penny, the split makes you feel at home with a brilliant view of the pool and beach. The staff were very courteous and ever smiling. We definitely feel like visiting the place over and over, its absolutely brilliant and is definite. Some of the worlds best Mojitos and Long Island Iced Teas were served there!!!! Fantastic options to eat as well.. the Olive wins hands down.. some beach shacks as well..

My family has been traveling to Thailand almost every year and we have stayed all over Thailand. The JW Marriott in Khao Lak is by far the best hotel we have stayed at. The hotel is beautiful and the service is excellent: every one is very nice and helpful. The private beach is beautiful with soft white sand and clear blue warm waters. It was off-season so very few people at the hotel and easy to get a beach chair. Someone from the hotel regularly made the rounds to provide ice cold water, fresh fruit, or towels.
The pool is amazing and winds around the whole hotel. My son loved playing in the sand pool w/the waterslide as well as the main pool area. Pool bar provided great drinks and light meals.
The rooms were spacious, clean, with nice decor. Beds were very comfy. Free wifi in the rooms and throughout the hotel.
Kids room provides lots of activities to keep kids occupied. The ladies working there are very nice and the kids enjoyed playing with them.
The hotel is about 15 min ride from the main town area, but easy to get taxi into town and back.
Overall, a great value and hotel, especially if you are looking to relax in a beautiful location. Definitely will be back. Hope Khao Lak doesn't get too crowded and commercialized like Phuket, but given the rate at which hotels and shops are popping up, I suspect it will be a matter of time before it does...

For starters, the reservation process was extremely well done, especially compared to other hotels in Thailand. The e-mail responses were quick and helpful and confirmation was smooth.

The rooms were typical for JW Marriott - first class. The beds are really comfortable with very large and fluffy pillows. Good closet space with a mini-bar and safe. The bathroom was very spacious with a very large shower and deep bathtub.

Like many others, we stayed in the ground level room with direct pool access. It's a novel concept and can be fun to swim around the resort and the kids loved to jump right in and swim around right beside our deck. The large pools were very nice.

Our room was actually very far from the beach and breakfast area. I guess that's part of the issue with such a large resort. I would have preferred a room closer to the beach area.

The breakfast buffet was great. My wife and I enjoyed the fresh coffee and the kids really got a kick out of the fresh fruit smoothies. The egg station and waffle station were well run and selection of meats, cheeses, fruits, cereals and pastries was outstanding. A great way to start the day.

We ate most lunches and dinners outside the resort - sometimes on a daytrip or sometime just down the beach. Our favorite for a simple sunset dinner was Mama's a few minutes walk to the right. Also, the first place on the left - connected with Mr. Cha's. He helped us arrange several tours and was very friendly and personable.

Transport from the resort to town was a bit of a hassle. It took at least 15 minutes to get a taxi or hotel van and the price is 300 baht each way.

In town, our favorite restaurants were Smiles and Jai - simple and delicious.

The Marriott staff were extremely helpful and friendly although it seemed like the place was less than half occupied.

The beach was beautiful - powdery sand and it was nice to walk in either direction. The water is extremely warm - around 30d C.

Overall, a great resort.
