“Just the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Stayed for 6 nights in August. We did not want to leave. This hotel is paradise, set on the best beach in Khao Lak. From the moment we arrived we were impressed. It is a large hotel set in beautifully maintained gardens. But what makes is stand out is the 4 massive swimming pools and the 3.2km on canals that link to the pools. It is always possible to find a quiet place to swim as well as getting a good daily workout walking the canals. The staff are all friendly, helpful and show Thai hospitality at its best. A special thanks to Nook at reception, Ball at the pool bar and Jane and Nuch at the Waterfront restuarant. The buffet breakfast is superb and there is a choice to suit everyone. The standout is the fresh smoothie bar made to order with the fruit of your choice. The rooms were also beautifully decorated thai style. Walk out to the beach and turn right and there is a number of bars, restuarants and massages available. You can't go past the Blue Mist where the very friendly Mr Mo and Mr Pick will look after your every need. The food and drinks are cheap and delicious. A fraction of the price the hotel charges. They also do a laundry service for 70THB kg, organize tours and taxis again for a fraction of what the hotel charges. If you want a quiet relaxing holiday this is the place to go as there is very little else in Khao Lak especially in low season. After our 6 nights here we went to Kata Phuket for 1 week and had wished we had lnever left the JW Marriott. We will definately be back.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for a pool access room.

To commence our holiday through Thailand, we started by a total relaxaton at the JW Marriott in Khao Lak. Here we had the opportunity to lay back by the pool, either on our private deck from our pool access room or at the various large pools around the resort. We found the staff and service impeccable as we were greeted constantly wtith smiles and hellos and our requests were responded to in a very timely manner. The resort is isolated, so if you are there for shopping you will have to find a way to the centre - taxi on call was 300THB each way. But this wasnt the reason we were here, so we did not find this inconvenient. I could not fault the staff or the complex itself, as it was easy to get around, and felt secure. You are able to walk and play along the beach without any annoying vendors trying to sell sarongs etc. which made for many pleasant walks. There are various restaurants on the beach that I highly recommend that should be frequented and a very special mention of the Blue Mist that is run by Mr Mo. He is a extremely friendly and helpful person and made our stay even more enjoyable. We did not use the SPA as we had massages from the Blue Mist, so unable to comment. We did however frequent the infinity Bar at happy hour, and received a very good service.
Value was excellent,as we purchased a voucher through Scoopon.

I just returned yesterday from a 7 night stay at this resort using a scoopon voucher. When we arrived to check in i was told that the resort was overbooked and they would relocate us elsewhere. despite me confirming my booking 2 days prior to arriving, they told me they had contacted my travel agent to tell them, on calling my agent this was not the case, they never heard from them! After a terrible argument with the manager of the hotel they found us a room which was not the pool access room we were supposed to have a free upgrade too. 4 days later an indian wedding of 550 people arrived and they closed all bar 1 restaurant in the resort, closed the spa and took all the beach front and had music pounding until 5am. I spoke to management who moved us, along with all the other non-indian guests to the Le Meredian up the road which is a much older and much more expensive resort. We received no compensation and no apologies. They then told us they would arrange a transfer from Le Meredian to the airport on our last day at 1pm. At 12pm we received a letter under the door of the hotel saying they couldn't get a car so we would have to do arrange ourselves. The hotel and rooms are fanstastic however this is the worst run hotel i have EVER stayed at. Managements service and treatment were disgusting. Needless to say they will be getting a very dirty letter from me!! Would definately NEVER return.

We stayed from the 3th to the 10th August. The 3rd to the 8th was superb. The hotel facilities and the staff were fantastic. We loved our pool access room. Swimming from your room was a fantastic bonus. The restaurants served great food. A special mention for Chef Than of the Thai restaurant, we did cookery school with him and learnt, hands on, to do an authentic meal. He was a great teacher and chef. Everything changed from the 8th. The hotel had booked in a very large wedding, taking over 250 rooms. The beach became a building site, the Spa closed to non wedding guests, the Thai restaurant and the Japanese restaurant, the Deli and the main bar closed to everyone but wedding guests. Other services deteriorated. Many guests were moved to other hotels without prior warning. We complained and were given a free night and free transfer to the Airport. No warning was given when we checked in allowing us to transfer to another hotel.
The first part of the week was 5 star the second part 1 star. We would happily return but would check on functions in the hotel. It made our last part of our stay make us feel like second class guests and we are Marroitt Elite members.

We booked 2 Vouchers, each 3 nights at the JW Mariott, which included accommodation, breakfasts, 2 x 1 hr massages, and 50% contriubution to the return fare to Phuket airport.
The fare was quoted as 1500 Bhat ( each way) approxately 50 Australian Dollars. The Hotel is a 1.5 hour ride from the airport! Theoretically the hotel should have repaid us 3000 Baht for the 2 Vouchers. In fact they refused to pay anything at all.
After a heated discussion with the manager we were offered a 1250 Baht compensation.
We find that pretty unethical.
Dining: We ate at the Italian Restaurant. We expected better quality and service for the relatively high price we paid. Relative in terms of what fantastic quality, freshness and service one gets at some of the Koa Lak restaurants.

The good side: The room was nice, large comfortable, clean with good service. The Hotel has good facilities and is kept in good shape. Staff is very friendly.

My recommendation: Make absolutely sure the Hotel confirms each and every advertised service.

I have stayed at more than 20 Marriotts of various Marriott brands, and I now have met the worst. In terms of hardware, it is below average (yes, it's better than some of the Courtyards, but for the price?!). In terms of service, it is at the bottom. Go to the new Renaissance Phuket or the not-as-new JW in Phuket. The manager here really needs to take some lessons from the two managers there.

Here're the details, building from the below-average infrastructure to the very inconsistent service:

1 - When my family of 4 (2 rooms) in the morning, the electricity went down, for the better part of the day and the next. When the electricity came back up, then we realize some of them (like the TV) doesn't work. Calls to the front desk and engineering took at least an hour to resolve that.

2 - The hotel is just not well designed. This is probably because this is a rather dilapidated local hotel taken over by JW a few years before. But the upgrading down seems to be superficial. With the rainy season, there are water leaks (which were left unmopped and slippery) everywhere. Very many little design flaws abound. Like the bedside lamp that hangs so close to the phone that I hit the lamp (hard-fastened) a few times (I wish I learned fast, but it was dark and I was jet-lagged). The glass door to the toilet swings such that it often cut the heels, the phone in the toilet dropped often, etc. The playroom had more broken stuff. Ping-pong balls with cracks (hard to play these), both foos-ball machines were defective, etc.

3 - Several other aspects are average, but not of 5-star (or even 4-star) quality. I notice some commentators said the breakfast was good. I thought it was so-so. I think these commentators have not been to the Renaissance of the JW Phuket, where the food was much better (including all sorts of ice-cream!). And the 1 hour commute to the hotel was really long. To a location that is only average, not any better than most of the rest of Phuket.

4 - About half the staff are rude, a quarter indifferent with blank stares (probably because they don't understand English...and we are not talking about the janitorial staff, but front-line staff like the omelette chef). One morning, a staff scolded a kid (not mine) for taking tea at a buffet. One would expect that the tea is included in the buffet. And there are no signs to say it's chargeable. In any case, why scold a JW client...especially preying on a kid. In another instance, the front desk was simply rude when I ask if Marriott Silver elites get discounts on food. This hotel has successfully turned normally polite and kind Thai's into short-tempered staff.

5. The hotel managers were unresponsive. The manager at the breakfast cafe showed up only in the late mornings (like 10 am), and sometimes not at all. But the German manager (very young) at the seafood restaurant was on the ball, making sure every table was happy. The facilities manager (or was that the hotel manager?) tried to be responsive, but he seemed to be overwhelmed with all the hardware and software breaking around him. Things seemed to be always on fire-fighting mode, so service was sometimes good and often bad.

I would never go back to this hotel.
