“Amazing stay in khao lak”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2011 via mobile

On day 5 of a weeks stay and can heartily recommend the jw Marriott khao lak. The resort is lovely with a great beach and huge meandering pool. Ice water is served on the beach which is a nice touch. The breakfast is terrific especially when you sit on the deck overlooking the beach and palm trees. The ink banana smoothie is amazing! Free wifi everywhere even on the beach ! The huts on the each to either side of the resort offer massages ( most for 300 baht per hour). We've each had one a day. There are also restaurants there and every meal we've had has been delicious and cheap. There are taxis available at the barrier entrance to the hotel. A trip to town is 250 to 300 baht for 4. Much less than the hotel shuttle. The spa is beautiful but pricey do we have stuck to massages on the beach. It is lovely to relax a few yards from the waves. Have oy eaten at the Japanese restaurant and can't really say I would go back. Pricey and food was so so. So many better options on the beach or on town.

This hotel was not only fabulously luxurious but the staff were second to none! Find a package with breakfast included or it's $50 per! We had one with it included and it was the most incredible breakfast we've ever seen. The choices and selection have to been seen to be appreciated. Watch out for happy hour: yes, the drinks are 1/2 price, but only at select locations. Don't just swim up to any bar, they're not all honoring happy hour and you get whopped with the bill at the end. The beach was fabulous; even though the hotel was pretty full, the beach was still not packed and the sand was great. The water isn't as clear as we anticipated but still really, really nice. Khao Lak is a wonderful town. Although catering to tourists, it's a very enjoyable town to be in, dine in, etc.

Room Tip: Choose deluxe pool access. They were the best rooms there!

My partner and I stayed here back in November for 3 nights on a package. My first impression wasn't too good as the reception staff didn't seem like the happiest or most helpful of people. However the room was nice and pool access....the entire hotel was pool access. Simply amazing! No need to leave your room or the pool that surrounds the hotel. I liked how they have daily activities that you can sign up for such as thai boxing classes, aerobics etc. A very very busy hotel! You don't really know until breakfast (which was very very nice and had a hugh variety!) or when you try to find a chair by the beach. To get in the front row, you may need to wake up at 5am as it is in high demand.

The staff at Olive were extremely kind! Probably the nicest staff members at this hotel. One girl at Olive even got and helped us with lighting up a lantern to the sky. Definitely the highlight of our stay! Thank you Wui Wui :)

A very nice stay :) Can't wait to return to Khao Lak!

This resort appears to successfully cater for everybody: families, couples, singles, corporate guests, expats, divers, the young and the old from all over the world.

Our 15 day holiday needed to cater for two exhausted working parents with two children: aged one and the other seven. It was a tall ask, but the JW Marriott, Khao Lak excelled. Apologies for the long summary – but we loved it.

STAFF
One word - Excellent. In reception, Kathleen is marvellous and helpful. If you need anything she can organise it, book it and get you on your way. The Waterfront team look after guests at breakfast and lunch. I wish to personally thank Nuch (I note an earlier review mentioning Nuch - she is truly wonderful), Mew, Oil, Nam, Mam, and the remainder of Ann's team for making sure we had everything we needed at all times. We hope the resort managers recognise and continue to care for this great team. When we left they gave both our kids presents. They made our trip. Our kids will have a lifelong love of Thailand because of them. Ta in housekeeping also did a wonderful job and no ask was too big. All the staff were brilliant with our kids.

ACCOMMODATION
We booked the JW Marriott Khao Lak after seeing a fantastic deal on Travelzoo. We contacted the hotel in advance to clarify some items and from the outset they were wonderful. No request unfulfilled. No promise unmet. We had an image of what we wanted from this holiday...it was better.

Upon arrival we were upgraded to a pool access room. We wondered if the rooms would be too small for the four of us, but they easily fit a cot, single bed and king bed. We opted for a balcony that had a glass safety fence to keep the baby out of the pool. It was absolutely ideal (see room tips on the different options of balconies available for pool access rooms – you can select the most ideal option to meet your needs).

Comfortable beds, spotless rooms, with luxurious amenities. The bathroom is spectacular. The free internet access from the room was great. Mobile range waxed and waned some days in the rooms. There was a good selection of satellite channels and we borrowed additional DVDs from the hotel.

The rooms are serviced twice daily and at night the kids loved the animals made from the fresh towels.

We invited two different ex-pat families from KL and Phuket to stay at the resort. They were accommodated close by and their unique needs were met as equally as ours.

FOOD
The breakfast is great! Huge selection. Australian, English, Indian, Japanese, European, and American tastes are all catered for. The smoothie bar and the coffee is excellent.

We enjoyed many lunches at the Waterfront. Nuch, Mew and the Waterfront team looked after us. We ended up eating here many times due to the quality and helpfulness of the staff. The wine list is not too bad either.

The room service menu in the hotel is broad and very reasonably priced.

We ate at the hotel Thai restaurant a few times but that was a bit tricky with kids. The Mediterranean restaurant had a cover band who played 70 and 80s songs you couldn’t help sing along too – best to book and sit outside on a beautiful night.

Overall we enjoyed the local food outside the hotel on the beach for dinners, while we watched the spectacular red sunsets. Facing the water: Famai to the left is great. On the right are a number of great cheap places. The Andaman / Blue Mist are probably the best. The smaller quieter family restaurants are also worth trying. We ate in them all and found something new and good each night. Take mossie spray at night. Most of these venues offer massages (300 BHT – with oil 400 BHT), cheap laundry (70 BHT / kilo) and inexpensive private tours.

BARS
The bars are nice at the resort. Two pool bars and then a resort bar area near reception. The bar staff were great. Ta at the Aquamarine/Infinity pool bars can make a great mai tai!

POOL / OCEAN
Can't say enough about just how nice the beach and pool were. The 3km pool is really amazing! You can literally swim to breakfast and around the resort all day. It’s great for kids.

The palm tree lined beach is secluded, quiet and very relaxing. We spent time playing with the kids, and reading on the beach. We went for long walks each morning. If you want to relax, this is the place. The beach was also great for swimming with the kids. It was calm over our two week stay, with small surf and no jelly fish.

The beach staff are great. They offer water, coconuts, fresh towels, cocktails when necessary and make sure everything is immaculate.

My kids loved the elephant’s visits and the coconut retrieving monkey. It’s fantastic to have pictures of the kids riding elephants at sunset on the beach.

The hotel offers free hire of bikes, kayaks, boogy boards, inflatable toys etc. The hotel also has many activities to do free of charge including yoga on the beach, pilates, beach volleyball, table tennis, thai boxing classes, squash and tennis courts, and bike tours (small charge). The gym had all the necessary gear.

SPA / MASSAGE
We had numerous massages at the Resort Spa and it is gorgeous. I would highly recommend it. Whilst cheaper massages are available on the beach (300 – 400BHT), outside the resort, we found the resort massages to be consistently good and among the best we have ever had. Don’t bother with the pedicure in the resort or on the beach.

KIDS CLUB
The kids club was wonderful for both my seven year old and one year old. We were there daily and they made sure my two boys had a wonderful time. We completed numerous craft activities and made Christmas presents for the whole family.

PROXIMITY
Thai airways was great from Australia to Phuket. We bought a seat for our one year old and took a car seat for him to sit in – we will always do this in future. We travelled for just over an hour from the Phuket airport to get to the resort. We loved the remoteness - away from the tourists and among the national parks.

This is not Phuket – it runs at a different speed. Khao Lak comes alive at night and the markets on the weekend are an experience. We easily accessed everyday items such as nappies from the local supermarket. Tailor made suits and great food are in abundance.

The hotel runs regular shuttle service to Khao Lak Centre 100 BHT per person each way (200 BHT return). A local taxi from Khao Lak Centre to the hotel cost us btn 200 - 300 BHT.

ADDITIONAL TRIPS
We went elephant trekking one day. We rode elephants to a waterfall then scaled the falls. We were able to get in the water and wash the elephants after the trek. The experience was great and the kids loved it.

We booked a luxury, air conditioned JW Marriott van for the whole day and toured around Phuket island. Maan from JW Marriott was our driver and tour guide. He took us to a variety of places to sightsee, eat locally and shop. We would not have found these places on our own and having the van was fantastic as we had a baby seat/place for the baby to sleep and an endless source of water/ refresher towels. It was very reasonably priced and a real highlight of the trip.

We booked both excursions via the hotel which we may have got cheaper elsewhere but for luxury, convenience and confidence we were very happy.

GREIVANCE LIST
Empty.
We saw friends, met great people, had fun. Our children were loved and had a ball. We had the most relaxing holiday we’d ever had.

Firstly: BEWARE of the taxi driver outside the hotel. I had enjoyed my stay in the JW Marriot Hotel, Khao Lak. The staff were nice, brilliant rooms!! and pretty much everything else was perfect. Good food in the Restaurants: Premrudi (Thai) and Antonio's (Italian) restaurants outside the hotel in the small plaza. Would really recommend to stay in this hotel!

This resort offers you all pleasures of life. Green territory, awesome beach, spacious room and bathroom. Breakfast buffet is very rich and various. The spa is fantastic and absolutely worth its money. The restaurants of the hotel are not cheap but not too expensive either and the food was very good, I especially appreciated BBQ night (all you can eat for around 30 Euro is really a great deal with all their lobsters, crabs and tiger prawns!) I can mention only two weak points. The first is the staff speaking very poor English. This was quite a negative surprise. The second is the room cleaning. It was clean but some maids did their job worse than the others. It happened a couple of times when things were not systemized well but overall nothing bad to comment. If you want to have a relaxing classy stay go for this resort. If you want to go to the center of the town you have to take a taxi but we never went as had everything we needed inside.

Room Tip: pool access room is nice

We have really enjoyed our stay at the JW Khao Lak. From the minute we walked into the hotel the staff has been so friendly and helpful. The suites are spacious and very good for a family of 4. The restaurants at the property are a bit expensive, but the restaurants on the beach next to the resorts are really nice so for cheaper options it is worth to visit those.

The breakfast is great! Huge variation. The waitress Nuch is a star. We hope the hotel takes good care of her. She really looks after her guests. Every morning she has given our little boy his favourite fruit and make sure we have enough coffee.

The beach boys who looks after the bar and service at the beach is also great. Walks around and fills up your glass all day with water, fresh towels and makes sure the place looks clean.

One thing we did not like is that the water has jelly fish which burns, that meant we have mostly used the pool. We never got stinged, but several other on the beach got a burn. It is not dangerous and the hotel medical staff looks after you if something happens. It is reasureing that they have a nurse on site.

We also like the lunches very much. Huge selection and something for everyone.
The hotel has a deli, but the selection there could be so much better. I know for a fact a lot of the hotel guests goes to the 7/11 store next to the hotel to buy small things, since the Deli is expensive and has a rather small selection of snacks and drinks.

The pool is really something. Many km long, and great for children. Huge plus for the hotel.
All in all we recommend this place if you are going to Khao Lak.
One small tip at the end; for Thai-massage you should try the Silk Spa -located on the road, next to the main drive entrance of the JW hotel. It is a small place, have 4 girls there who do such a great job. Much better to lie there than on the beach where it is so hot and in the evening has lots of mosqitos. Ask for a girl name Noi, she is the best. Never had such a good thai-massasge in my life.

If you choose this hotel- ENJOY!
