“Excellent Place to Relax After Hiking Kilimanjaro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2008

My boyfriend and I just returned from Africa and really enjoyed our stay at the Ilboru Safari Lodge. We booked a Kilimanjaro hike through Good Earth Tours and decided to upgrade to the Safari Lodge for our stay in Arusha before and after the hike. It was an excellend choice because this place was beautiful and relaxing.

We arrived in the evening before our hike began the next morning. The staff was very friendly and welcomed us with fresh juice (which was very delicious). They then took us to our room/hut -- which was a beautiful walk through well-taken-care-of gardens -- once inside the room we were very impressed -- it was much more than we expected -- clean linens, hot water, free bottled water, comfy, quiet and relaxing. Just what we were looking for.

The food at the Lodge was also very good. Breakfast is buffet style and complimentary. They have hot food, fresh fruit, juice and coffee bar -- it was excellent. The cook came out to greet everyone (table by table) -- he was very friendly and always made sure everyone was happy with their meal. The dinner menu has quite a variety of different ethnic foods to choose from and is served almost family style (very large portions) -- which was great for the price (very inexpensive). I was very impressed with the food and neither me nor my boyfriend ever had digestive problems.

Important Note: If you take a hot shower and plan to take another hot shower the next day, don't forget to turn the heater on 45 minutes beforehand or else you will be taking a very cold shower your second time around.

Overall, this was a great hotel/lodge and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to relax. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed sitting on the loungers around the pool basking in the sun reading a book. And...the hotel has two computers in the snack bar with free internet...which made it nice to check the status of the Olympics during our stay.

  • Liked — The staff was very friendly and the environment was relaxing.
  • Disliked — Having to turn the heater on to get additional hot water.

The Ilburo does provide a very nice respite from the hubbub of Arusha - as written earlier, it's about 1-2K up a side road out of town. This makes it very quiet, with no traffic and only the presence of locals nearby.

The gardens are very nice, tranquil and the pool is clean with some nice places to sit and relax throughout the expansive grounds.

The rooms are clean and the bed is reasonably comfortable (our unit had a nice, firm mattress).

However - we had very little hot water in our shower, and the pressure was just above a trickle. Hard to wash the dust off after 5 days in the Serengeti!

FOOD: Dismal, really. We've come not to expect anything marvelous from Tanzania's cuisine, but his place ranked low on our list of 5-6 other accommodations we've tried in and out of Arusha. Breakfast consisted of cold omelette, fried-to-oblivion potatoes, and irritated waitstaff. But, for the $100 room, we expected something much better.

VALUE: WE paid the standard rate of US$100, and we were heavily disappointed. To top it off, they insist (!) on taking an additional 10% when paying by credit card.

Last - the snack bar at the back, which provides free internet (yahoo!) was not very welcoming. We were pretty much run out at about 9 p.m. by a small group of 20-something local men who wanted to watch some American soft-porn on the TV while we were finishing up our dinner. Not so sweet.

We found a much better value, albeit in a more noisy part of town, at the Arusha Crown hotel. A run down and unsightly neighborhood, but at least there we got fresh breaky, and a free view of the soccer game across the street in the stadium. (And TV, and hot water with pressure). From there, you can walk into town, also.

we stayed at this lodge for three nights ,one night before our trip to Dodoma and another two night on our return before we began our safari ,the rooms were good and plenty of hot water .lovely gardens with lots of beautiful birds
food was a little hit and miss the snack menu was very good .breakfast i skipped after the first one .
If you are staying for one night before your safari this lodge is great as the staff are all really friendly and it has a great pool .
we walked down to the main road one morning to do a little shopping and the local children were delightful singing "hello hello ,how are you?"infact everyone we met in and around the lodge were really friendly

Found this gem of a place via a trip adviser forum posting while researching pre & post lodging for our kilimanjaro climb. It was surprisingly a very nice place. Room rates were around $100.00 USD per night. Probably a little less expensive if you pay with cash vs a credit card.

Its a little disconcerting upon arrival because you are on a main road in Arusha and then turn up a unpaved very much a "locals" area road with shops & homes. The place itself is very nice & gated/fenced from the community (i.e. security). It is pretty quiet with the exception of the occasional calls from turkeys housed in the very back of the facility.

The rooms are adequately furnished with mosquito nets, welcome drink, bottled water, evening turn down service & most importantly hot water. As with most part of this area there is the occasional power outage but this facility has a generator.

There is also a nice bar area, pool, laundry service, free internet access and a restaurant with decent enough food (free breakfast).

The front desk service was excellent. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay. For those looking for more than a backpacking place but less than the more expensive lodges this is a good choice.
