“Great introduction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

It was a breathtaking sight arriving at night. You are welcomed with a refreshing drink and towel. The room was massive and well decorated. The bathroom was very roomy to say the least. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was their only let down. Breakfast was perfect and so was lunch but dinner not so much. As you wake up with the sunrise and step outside, the surrounds are just beautiful. You are in the middle of the coffee plantation and, with all the different trees, the birdlife is wonderful to hear. It was the perfect way to start our African adventure

I just arrived from a safari in Tanzania and this is the firts of my comments on the different hotels associated to this trip.
The hotel in general terms is nice, it´s got cozy and well decorated rooms. Service provided by the hotel staff is good.
Cuisine at the main restaurant is good ( lunch service provided by a buffet and cafeteria have both room for improvement).
Now, the problem is the price/quality ratio. It is not acceptable having not natural orange juice for the price we are paying for lodging. With regard to lunch service, theres is very little variety for the different dishes and the ones offered are extremely simple and not very appealing. Fruits for desserts were not in very good conditions ( not fresh). This buffet needs more variety and better quality. All in all, as I stated in the title, this could have been a better experience if they really have cared to fix all these details. Management of this hotel should take good notice.
All in all, let´s say the experience was fair.

Room Tip: Plantation rooms are very nice

Dear Rafael

May I firstly thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your stay with us at Arusha Coffee Lodge, part of the Elewana Collection lodges, camps and boutique beach hotels. It is much appreciated.

May I also thank you for your kind words regarding the 'good service' and 'cozy and well decorated rooms'. However I most disappointed to read that your stay with us was not as exemplary as it should have been, and to the level that is expected of an Elewana Collection lodging.

We have looked into your comments regarding the lack of freshly squeezed orange juice and your comments regarding the buffet lunch and lunch items. I would now like to take this opportunity to share my findings with you and those readers of this review.

Oranges in Tanzania are excellent for juicing between June and September (depending on the levels of sunshine and rain) at which time they are sweet at the correct stage of ripening. The rest of the year the oranges can be quite bitter in taste and require extra sugar to sweeten the juice, something which is not 'natural' and also not necessarily a healthy option. We therefore to maintain the quality and consistency of juice by reverting to manufactured but no less well-known branded orange juices that profess to contain 100% natural product.

We understand that this is not ideal and are actively looking into import suppliers of oranges that can help provide the correct quality but as you will appreciate receiving a consistent quality of oranges is a problem faced in our industry here in Tanzania. However we accept this challenge from you and we hope on your return to be in a position to provide you with a selection of freshly squeezed juices.

As to your commentary regarding our luncheon options, we have two main options for lunch. Firstly we have a buffet and carvery, which offers one hot vegetarian selection with rice, vegetables and fried potatoes, and two meat dishes also. We also provide freshly prepared salads and to finish with an array of tempting desserts. I believe that this is the option to which your refer.

In addition to the Garden Lunch Buffet we have a full and varied selection of dishes available from our all-day Bistro, available to all residents staying with us on full-board basis. With multiple choices of freshly cooked pizza, delicious salads, freshly made pasta dishes as well as the more traditional favourites such as fried chicken, Arusha Coffee Lodges' specially prepared beef or chicken burgers and our Executive Chef's twist on fish and chips, this menu is always available in either the Coffee Lodge gardens, or taken in the Bistro itself, either indoors or on the outdoor covered veranda.

With a plethora of desserts, freshly baked cakes, coffees, and ice creams available, I am somewhat perplexed at why these offerings were not made available to you. I have spoken with our Lodge Management Team to ask them to remind all who come to eat lunch in our Coffee Lodge gardens that, for those who are resident with us on full board rate, our Bistro offering is also included in your stay.

I trust that this response is satisfactory and helps to explain those two points that you have highlighted. I welcome further comments from you and suggestions as to how we can best serve all who come to stay at our tranquil oasis of Arusha Coffee Lodge.

With best regards,

C Jason Barry

We spent one night here before embarking on our Tanzanian safari adventure. We were pleasantly surprised with the property. The staff was super friendly and accommodating, we found the lodge to be very beautiful and charming and the rooms were extremely spacious and comfortable. It was perfect for what we needed it for!

The Coffee Lodge is literally adjacent to the Arusha airport, so points there. As soon as you arrive, you are assigned a personal 'Butler', who acts as your server and housekeeper for the length of your stay. The butler is always at your side to attend to your needs, although some may find it slightly exasperating to have someone floating around you all the time, smiling and bowing. However, A+ for effort, attitude and disposition. Good food. Very good service and quality overall.

The one thing I did take issue at is the sleep quality. We asked for a room for 3 people, which generally means a king/queen sized bed (or two twin beds side to side) and an extra bed. However, to my eternal dismay, I entered the room and, instead of an extra bed, it was outfitted with a pull-out sofa-bed. I hold the firm belief that nowhere in the world does there exist a comfortable (or even endurable) sofa-bed and, true to form, this one was no exception. Backbreaking, creaky, slanted, you name it. I didn't bat an eye all night. That is something you must consider. Also, the room was scorching hot inside.

Additionally, the personnel at the front desk need some polishing in their English and people skills. To me they came off as rude and apathetic.

Still a good place tho!!!

We live in Dar es Salaam and came to Arusha Coffee Lodge just for a couple of nights to do one last safari before we move back to the US. We brought our 3 year old and 1 year old. While no vacation is ever simple with such young children, the Lodge was very accommodating and friendly. They provided us with a baby cot and also set up an extra bed for the toddler, all with good bed nets. They also organized for us a one day safari into Arusha National Park. While Arusha NP is certainly not on the level of the other parks in Northern Tanzania, it was perfect for young kids and our driver, Nassoro, was very tolerant of the crying and meltdowns that inevitably took place.

We didn't eat at the buffet lunches or dinners because it was too much of a meal for us, however, we ate at their bistro cafe several times which has a very kid-friendly menu and really reasonable prices. And, the food was really good. Breakfast is also nice, but not a buffet. We had to wait a bit of time for juice and cereal, which was difficult. The rooms are really nice, but for some reason, the floors are extremely slippery. We all had a spill at one point or another - except for the baby. She managed just fine!

There is a great playground and nice pool, part of our motivation for selecting the Lodge. Overall, I would be happy to come back either with older children or just adults. The grounds are lovely and the location is really good as it is not far from different things in Arusha town. The staff were very friendly and accommodating of children (as is the general rule in Tanzania).

First and last stop on the Elewana safari. Good way to start and eases flight times at the end, especially if you are going on to Zanzibar.
Rooms are excellent, nearly as good as The Manor, but not quite. They are individual wooden huts in the grounds, very comfortable. Food was ok, but needs a bit more variety in the dining room. The buffet lunches are good.
Service very attentive, a butler as at The Manor. We had Denis, never stops talking and really wants you to enjoy your stay. Do go on the coffee plantation trip just across the road. I have only given this 4 stars because I have to mark some of the others higher, but if you do not stay at the other Elewana places it would be 4 to 5. Maybe trip adviser should start a marks out of 10.
