“Poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

After traveling 24 hrs we upgraded to a suite. We arrived at midnight so we were quite tired. At first blush, the room appears lovely, however that's where it ends. As we were getting into bed we noticed the sheets were dirty and they had never been changed. Same for the towels. The housekeeper came to the room and changed the sheets. But she stripped the bed and said she had to wash the sheets and bring them back. Really? There isn't a spare set of sheets in the whole hotel? Then when she did return, she didn't bother putting on the top sheet, she just replaced the fitted and comforter. On top of that, she only replaced some of the dirty towels , not all of them, which i found out the hard way. Never make assumptions, double check the work. She asked if we wanted to replenish our bowl of fresh fruit, we said yes and she never came back. She never cleaned the room, she only wiped it down. In the bathroom, there is a stand up shower and bath tub. She never cleaned the tub once. The hair from the previous person was there the whole entire time. We finally figured out that the reason the rooms are so filthy is because there are no cleaning supplies. When you walk by the housekeeping cart, there is nothing on it to clean. Just some dirty rags. We told reception and they were in different. We paid twice the price of a standard room, we expected at least clean sheets and towels, maybe even an apology. On top of that the pool was under construction. Some of the reviews are glowing, which is one of the reasons we selected this hotel. But that was not our experience.

We were booked into this hotel for one night prior to the start of our safari. The hotel staff is very welcoming and I have to say that the dinner we had in the restaurant upon our arrival was one of the best in our two weeks in Tanzania - surprising since we ate very late and were the only people in the place! The menu has three cuisines - Tanzanian (which my son and I ate from), Indian (which my husband and other son ate from) - and English style. Tons of menu choices as well - it surprised us. On our return we had a day room here - we were all looking so forward to eating there... but sadly there is only a buffet option at lunch and it was not very good - or varied. The rooms are very worn - the bathrooms are not great - tiny and I had to call down for towels and soap! Make sure you understand how to use the air conditioner - we arrived late at night and I could not find the controls - of course in the morning I saw a hand held control right beside the bed! I would not stay here again - it was fine though but just a basic hotel.

We were met by staff with a hot washcloth and a flute glass of juice. The rooms were spacious and had lovely wood floors. Great shower! Ask for a room not overlooking the street since it is loud and busy. Great food in the restaurant and lovely setting over the gardens. Lots of staff around to assist you.

Stayed here for 4 nights and each day was quiet memorable. Right from the warm greetings from the reception staff, then ushered to my room which over looked the Manicured gardens which was spacious and impeccably clean. Meals times was a thing to always look out for. Fantastic array of breakfast options and spoil't for choice. As a coffee expert I have approved the coffee's served as world class from filter coffee to Amazing Macchiatos to frothy Cappuccinos and velvety Mochas to mention but a few. The management team and staff were very hospitable. Yes I would come again and again and wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend The Arusha Hotel.

This hotel is a decent hotel in a good location. The rooms were nice, clean, quiet and comfortable and the public areas light and spacious. There is a nice terrace outside where one can sit and view the garden area while having something to drink. There is also a cozy bar downstairs with a good bartender and we also found the upstairs restaurant to have an excellent lunch buffet. The baked pumpkin and stewed chicken with vegetables were both truly delicious. The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace overlooking the garden and is a pleasant place to have your meal. A good gift shop is located off the lobby for your shopping convenience as well. The only caveat regarding this hotel (and this may be a problem with others in Arusha due to poverty) is that we were approached numerous times by street people who would pretend they were guests and try to shake our hands. We had been forewarned by our guide that this was a way for them to try to steal something so we backed off very quickly. They were not only outside the hotel but we had a run-in with one of them in the upstairs area as well so be alert. Everyone else here was very friendly so I don't write this to belittle the hotel. When I notified them of the "intruders" they immediately ran them off. All in all, we enjoyed our time here and recommend it as a good place to stay for a short visit in Arush.

I used the banqueting room here for an event. The manager met us and after sketching he outlines of the night; menu etc, handed us over to that sections manager who handled the whole thing well. We were very particular as to the snaked during the evening and altered quite a few of their suggestions to suit our guests; some vegetarian, some glutton free, no beef or pork – and that was all done well. The functions room opened out on to a veranda overlooking the garden which was great for breaks from the music and crowd we had inside. The hotel looks good for people coming in to a do – not sure what the style is but it must date back to when the hotel was built, white exterior and lots of natural wood. I was impressed and would use them again as although it sounds clichéd; they helped make the night one to remember

Dear Chris G,
Thank you very much for sharing your impressions about The Arusha Hotel on tripadvisor !
I am glad you enjoyed your time with us !
Our Conference and Banqueting team is indeed dedicated to make of every event a success and it is a pleasure to read that you are satisfied with yours.
The Arusha Hotel being the oldest hotels in town (since 1894), I would qualify its style as Colonial with, as you mentioned, the presence of wood in the Lobby and the outlets ...
The Arusha Hotel has been through various refurbishments but never lost its character despite the brand new rooms especially in the Garden Wing ...
Looking forward to having you at The Arusha Hotel sometimes soon !
Best,
Iman

First of all, the location: in Clock Tower, in the center of Arusha, it is actually the best place to visit the city center. We were at walking distance from several markets, Maasai market being my favorite (things being cheeper than everywhere else). We had a warm welcome at the hotel, everything was handled perfectly so we did not even have to ask for something!! The room was just perfect, good volume, with a great view on the garden.
My favorite was the breakfast! I've had many in Tanzania, but never at this level of quality and service, so the day could start really fine with it!

The hotel was for us the starting point of a safari, which we could not plan before arrival. Actually, we got it arranged very fast so we could go for a safari 2 days after arrival!!

And don't miss the Hatari bar, that makes you travel way back in time.
