Owner description: Shanga River House is a wonderful place to spend some time in Arusha. It is all about the workshops where 42 disabled Tanzanians recycle glass, paper and aluminium into high quality crafts. There is also the River House restaurant and the Shanga Shop to complete a day out on a beautiful coffee estate in Arusha town, close to Arusha Airport and on the road leading to the National Parks.

“Wonderful visit at the end of our safari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

We had a few hours before we needed to be at the airport so our guide took us to Shanga. We loved it! It was pleasantly cool under the trees as Emmanuel took us around and showed us their operations. Great mission and beautifully designed and produced crafts. In the end we didn't have as much time as we would have like to spend at Shanga. Next time we'll do lunch and spend more time shopping.

“The best way to end a perfect safari week!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

Our tour ended the 10 days of safari with a magnificent lunch at Shanga. The food was perfect, the restaurant environment heavenly. We toured the workshops and the gift shop and were touched by the multiple amazing jobs the disabled workers were doing in the glass, beads and textile workshops. Definitely a must-see if you visit Arusha!

“Great food, wonderful crafts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

We had an excellent lunch, and even more wonderful was the tour of the craft area. I bought a couple of things, but fell in love with the small blue pitcher with the handle shaped like and elephant! If I had more room in my carry one, I would have purchased some additional glassware!

Soup and bread are brought by the waiter, while salads are served buffet style. Your entrees are prepared over the open grill and you select them buffet style as well. Your dessert is served at the table. Overall, this was a lovely meal in a very relaxing environment, accompanied by a nice opportunity to pick up a few last minute gifts.

“A very special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014

Shanga Shangaa is many things. They have a glass blowing facility. They make their own glass beads for bead-craft. They have weavers making cloth. Others are creating crafts of various kinds, all of which they sell in their shop. There is a lovely garden where you can have drinks, and a very good restaurant, too.

The key is that all of the people creating this are disabled: deaf, blind or handicapped. They have a saying painted on a wall there: "Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see." It is a special place.

We were in Arusha twice. We made a point of going to Shanga Shangaa both times.

“Lovely afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

We spent a lovely afternoon at Shanga watching the demonstrations by the artists here. Then we shopped tip we dropped purchasing amazing items created on site. The whole premise is heart-warming and special. Sitting outside and having a drink, relaxing under the trees. I highly recommend it!
