“A well deserved tripadvisor rating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Can't overemphasize how friendly the service is here. In addition to being extremely attentive throughout my stay, the General Manager Anuj Sharma not only helped me book a room in another lodge for the last night of my stay, he worked hard to negotiate a discount for me. Highly recommended.

We've stayed at the African Tulip for a single night, just before departing on our safari on the next morning. We arrived late, at dinner time, and we were very tired from our onward journey. We were looking forward to a decent meal and a clean and spacious room. And that was what we got! The food and the room were just ok, no thrills, but also, no nasty surprises.
All-in: a good relation in value for money.

A lovely tranquil hotel in the middle of Arusha. The bed in the room was the biggest we'd been in, very comfortable indeed. The hotel is decorated simply yet elegantly and the bars and restaurants themed very well; particularly the Zanzibar Bar. A good stay and good nights sleep before setting off on safari. We ate at the baobab restaurant, which was good although a large Indian influence in the food, both for dinner and at breakfast; good food nonetheless!
The only thing I would say would be good is airport transfers. We paid $50 for a taxi from the airport to the hotel, and with little other transfer options, we had to pay.

We booked this hotel through Roy Safari of Arusha, Tanzania. The hotel is on "hotel row" near the central area of Arusha. The hotel is small and intimate and you will feel very welcome and safe here. The rooms are very nice, have wireless internet and ac. We used the African Tulip for two nights at the beginning of our safari and one night at the end of our two week adventure. The food is very good, better when they serve ala carte rather than with the buffet. The beef stroganoff is particularly tasty!

Be aware that once you leave the hotel you may want to have a local guide with you in Arusha. There are "friendly" confidence men working the area who will make your acquaintance and want to teach you a few swahili phrases and show you around the central market area and a few other sightseeing locations in town. They will not take you to the Maasai market place where you can buy affordable souvineers. The reason is that eventually they will tell you that they are "artists" and will show you some artwork claiming that the art is their original work....no so! You could buy the same pieces all around Arusha and Tanzania. Your confidence man will no doubt introduce himself using the name of the artist on the art work so that you will think you are buying an original from the artist.

You may feel more comfortable asking your safari company to provide a day guide if you want to walk around Arusha. This might be a very good idea if you are also going to the downtown area to exchange money for Tanzania shillings before your safari begins.

We heartily recommend Roy Safari and we had a fabulous safari with them (see our separate review).

We stayed a night in the African Tulip before and after our Safari with Roy Safari.
The hotel has very comfortable, large rooms. The staff was very helpful, and it has a nice pool in the garden. The food in the restaurants was good.
Very nice experience overall.

Our stay at the African Tulip was a delight and we were made to feel at home by the wonderful staff led by the very personable and helpful General Manager Anuj Sharma who greeted all guests personally. We stayed two nights prior and two nights post our Roys Safari - with a surprise bonus of an unexpected night due to the Nairobi Airport fire! Our compliments to Anuj for the excellent care and service, helping us (and other guests) navigate thru this difficult time! We stayed in a few of the rooms and all were big and beautifully decorated with very comfortable beds. We ate at the restaurant several times and for us, the Indian food was the best! Thank you to all the staff, who greeted us so warmly every time we returned "home". It was truly a very enjoyable stay.

Stayed here for two nights, one at the beginning of a safari and then on the return to Arusha at the end of it. Beds were very nice, great showers, big choice of food and the staff worked really hard to make sure we were happy. I would gladly stay there again, very nice experience all round.
