“Great hotel with EXCELLENT views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

This hotel was the second hotel in our 4N5D round-island tour by Edison Tours (you can Google them - their tours are famous for foreign travelers since it's conducted in English).

Overall the hotel, like mentioned by the previous reviewer - the rooms are nice with great views, but you can feel that the rooms are dated since the decor is mostly wooden furniture-based. BUT, the rooms are very comfortable, no mistake about that.

The hotel is situated above a shopping mall, so you can do your shopping downstairs and even grab some snacks (McDonalds, Gong-Cha etc) in the same building.

I would say that the highlight of the hotel would definitely be the dining experience and views since the restaurants and lounge are located on the high floors. It's also the first time in my life when I saw a small colour CRT TV in my toilet. Such things STILL exist! :P

Pros: Situated above a shopping mall with luxury brands, convenient location, clean and comfy rooms. The views are EXCELLENT.

Cons: The rooms are pretty dated but nevertheless still very comfortable.

Return? Definitely, for the view.

Room Tip: The higher, the better! The view is magnificent! Really!

Had a nice room view overlooking the harbour - room furnishings (same goes for the rest of the hotel) are quite dated but still comfortable. Think 80s/90s idea of 'grand' = ornate oversized framings etc ahahaha...

Wasn't very impressed with the breakfast spread though - advisable to stick to the local offerings because the international fare looks questionable.

No complaints on the service though - the front desk staff could converse sufficiently well in English.

This is a fine 5 * hotel, the breakfast floor high in the sky over looking more or less the harbour. Abundant breakfast.
It is located within a mega building with a lot of shops (fine Muji for instance). A big food store at level B3 with amongst others a good veggie food stall and a fine variety of other food outlets. Night market in the vicinity as is the Love River.

Stayed here for business, very grand and posh, definitely a place to be seen in Kaohsiung.

Arrived at 11am, room was not ready, had to hang out at lobby cafe until 1pm to check in. Lobby had free wifi, so could catch up with emails or surf.

Room was average size but comfortable. Nice big window overlooking the city that also lightened up the room with natural light.

Probably had the most restaurants of any hotels in Kaohsiung. Hosted business dinner at the steakhouse on the 43 floor. Was given a table with magnificent view of the city. The filet mignon was nicely done.

Breakfast served on 42 floor, nice selection of breakfast items, including a coffee machine on a corner, the kind that can brew latte/cappuccino, better than the normal weak coffee in a pot variety.

I stayed at grand Hi Lao hotel for two nights in October 2012. The check in was quick. The room was spacious. Hotel is located right in the city. We walked round the corner to et at a night market. There are so many variety of food and so cheap. Hotel is close to the Love River, where we walked, had a cuppa and something to eat by the river at night. The view was good. Breakfast at the hotel was good, there were a wide variety of food, western, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The only thing I don't like of this hotel is the pillow. It is just too low and soft for me, by second night I simply couldn't get enough rest therefore I felt really tired on the third day in Kaohsiung. The room is decorated in victorin style, and is clean. There is a surcharge for the Internet. I don't think I will stay at this hotel again due to the pillow. Will probably stay at crown plaza hotel again next time.

Nice hotel, if you are looking for convenient and deluxe hotel , its the best choice.

I travel to Kaosiung at least once per year for business & always stay here.
The hotel is clean with nice large clean rooms & lovely big beds. The staff are always pleasant & welcoming. Housekeeping are great & the laundry service is very efficient.
Over my many stays at The Grand Hi-Lai I have eaten in all the restaurants that are located within the hotel as well as venturing out to eat. Being a single female traveling alone, having the choice of so many restaurants within the hotel is great. The Teppanyaki restaurant is fantastic & by far my favourite style of food.
Excellent choice at breakfast with so many different choices to suit most tastes.
I have never had a bad expereince whilst staying at The Grand Hi-Lai & will continue to stay here whenever I travel to Kaohsiung.
