This Royal Hotel has a misleading English name..."Chang Chien" stands for "in front of station" with the "station" refers to the main Kaohsiung train station.
This claim is accurate--the (not the high speed) train station and metro exit are right across the street. Even the long distance coaches are right across the street too--what a flawless location!
By metro, the infamous Liouho market is just one stop away and even the harbor front sights, such as the Pier-2 art community, are just a few stations away with a transit at Formosa.
I stayed in the smallest double room for a night, on high floors facing the tracks and highway. Noise was minimal with the double layer window, but there was some noise from the neighbors.
Just like many other business hotel chains in Taiwan, the guests are spoiled with all the freebies. There is free instant noddles and snacks in the cupboard, as well as chilled drinks in the fridge. They provide all the amenities, including facewash and condoms, for free.
The bed was reasonably comfy for the price point.
There were several cable channels for English viewers, but I could not recall if there were news channels. The wireless Internet gives you access to the outside world anyway.
Breakfast is offered before 6am to 1pm, though the buffet is only on offer for a few hours before 10am. Choices are limited and some of them felt more lunch than breakfast. Nonetheless, they can fill you up until lunch. Vouchers will be provided at check in but no one bothered to check my voucher the next morning.
The underground lounge will continue to offer coffee (from an espresso machine) and ice cream all day long. There are a few convenience stores and restaurants around (of course--its a transport hub) too.
One issue if booked with certain hotel booking sites: the check in time was 6pm. You can only store your luggage at the lobby if you arrive early. The old hotel next door is being refitted--a bit of nuisance. Size of room a bit small for a Kaohsiung hotel too.
