“The Love River”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

Ai He (Love River) was a river where most loving couples come for a stroll years ago. At one stage, it was also a symbol of tragic love where young couples who can't be accepted by their own families came to take their own lives in proving their love for one another.

The Love River of Kaohsiung was a sticky river long time ago as it was where most sewer meets before heading to the sea... The river was cleaned up around 80-90s and the smell has certainly improved quite a lot from those days.

The Yan-Cherng District of Kaohsiung (that is just right next to the love river) - close to the other side of the Dragon Lantern was once the most expensive area of Kaohsiung with most of the imported goods in some parts of it. You can find the pubs and more foreign language book stores (ie: the Cave Book store) that sells mostly foreign literatures. Loads of foods to try around the love river that has been around for years and famous among the locals. It has been taken over by some of the new areas as the MRT station no longer cutting through the heart of this area. But if you do not mind walking a little, you can try the local food of Roast Duck noodles, Po Po Ice, Stew stores and the deep fried food stores (only make in Taiwan) and also the breakfast shop that makes really good soybean drinks and the local breakfast items. Bakery, shops and the good department stores are all nearby with some morning market around. Definitely recommended - unfortunately, I can't find the other places associated with the love river here to individually go through here.

The Kaohsiung history museum and the movie museum is also quite a nice place to go & understand a bit of the history of Kaohsiung. If you see the 228 Peace Memorials Parks next to the Love River, have a read of their stories - this is a democratic move for the local Taiwanese people that were opposed by the military and the army back then. You can probably also have a glance of some of the pictures in the museum as it was a bloody event for the southern part of Taiwan.

“Romantic at night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

It's a sight to be viewed at night, in the day time there's nothing much to see and there's hardly anything to do except to take a stroll and probably 2 pictures.
The river taxi doing the introduction is redundant, unless you have issues with walking, it's a pretty much money wasted itinerary

“We are a bit lost”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

We are a bit lost but lucky that the locals were kind enough to give us the direction. At the end we successfully got onto a boat and enjoy the nice scene of the river. Relax and calm. Do check with the ticket counter where the boat stop before purchase, if they are not that busy they will advise the most appropriate station to link to our next destination.

“Beauty Restored”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Last visited 20 yrs ago; now it is cleaned up with proper walk-way and rest area along the bank. Though not as fantastic as compared to others, it is still a must visit landmark in Kaohsiung, with your Love one - walking by the Love River.

“New Love Discovered”

The restored River is a polished gem. Sitting by the river was so relaxed as I watched the activities moving by.
