Kaohsiung city was the first stop of our nine-day Taiwan tour for family of four. We initially did not plan to visit Qijin (旗津) island, but after many locals strong recommendations to take a ferry ride there, we decided to make a trip.
It was Monday afternoon. After visit to Pier-2 Art Centre, we walked from Xiziwan Station (西子湾站) to the Gushan Ferry Pier (鼓山轮渡站). It was a 25 minutes slow walk, with interesting shops and eateries along the way. Also, the famous ice-snow dessert can be found near the Pier. Unfortunately, the legendary Hai Zhi Bing (海之冰) store closes every Monday.
Large groups of motorcycles and scooters zipped in and out of the terminal's gate while we were approaching the busy ferry terminal, which was simple and plain. You just need to throw a few coins into the fare collection box to be allowed though the fare gate. No tickets will be issued. The fare was reasonable. We paid only NT$50 for the four of us; two adults (15x2), one student (12), and one child (8).
We went up to the upper deck of a double-decker ferry. The lower deck was reserved for motorcycles and bicycles. The view from the upper deck was great, though the journey only took a short 10-15 minutes to get to the island's ferry pier. This ferry ride reminded me of the ferry service between Sentosa Island and World Trade Centre on mainland Singapore, which was unfortuantely terminated long ago. I felt so much sentimental longing for the past.
