“Wonderful rest at the Taroko”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

Good resort, truly simple and blissful. Beautiful, dreamy like environment. Blends perfectly with the environment and nature. Quiet and away from the city. There are nightly cultural Taroko dances and musical performances by the resort staff/folks. Enjoyed every moment of it.

Forget about staying at Hualien city and doing a day trip to Taroko.......stay at Leader Village in Taroko - I am very certain that you will appreciate the waking up to chirping birds and fresh mountain air. When I was there in early Dec 12, the experience of clouds wafting by was certainly uplifting to a city dweller like me!

The booking website that I used (got a confirmation email after the booking and paid when I reached the hotel - they accept cash or credit card):

http://www.leaderhotel.com/blw/leadervillage/e-contact-us.html

The rates are very reasonable, we paid NT$12,000 for the 8 of us for the night, including the set dinner (do opt for the set dinner as it was extraordinary - we opted for the meat option which was exciting, but they do have a vegetarian option) and breakfast. Incidentally, the following day, I did visit the other few accommodation options in Taroko e.g. Liwu and Tienhsiang and I did not regret my choice of Leader Village at all.

The nightly show at 8pm (free of charge) was really simple and unpretentious, not those commercialised ones that are cringeworthy. I think it showed off the Taroko tribe and the other Taiwanese tribes pretty well.

Breakfast was average but did not bother us a bit as the positives overwhelm the breakfast quality.

On the last day, the receptionist helped us with the luggage from the room to our waiting van, and guess what, she refused to accept a tip from us...

Tell you what, go stay in this gem of a hotel and I think you will know what I mean!

Room Tip: The rooms are all cottages on flat ground - look at the file photo at the top of this page and you g...

This property is set amongst the mountains so we were treated to amazing views, nature and fresh air at every moment. The wooden lodges added to its rustic charm. The nice thing was that you would be in nature but still enjoy amenities you would expect in a city hotel: hot water, heating, wifi, TV, complete set of toiletries, comfortable beds/ bedding etc.

While meals would not be considered as 5 star quality, the food portions were generous. The all Taroko tribe staff were very warm and attentive, and we could see that they were proud of their unique heritage.

A stay here would not be complete without going on walking trails in the compound as well as in the surrounding Bulowan area. We found the Bulowan tourist information nearby helpful in introducing the available trails to us. They also air an informative documentary on Taroko walking trails/ sights we could follow.

Settling here for 2 nights, away from noise/ pollution, automatically brings down one's blood pressure.

I stayed 1 nite at the hotel and I must say this is really a beautiful place. The design of the lodge blends in perfectly with the environment. The free performance performed by the hotel staff and children from the tribal people while not 100% professional is entertaining and very genuine. We really enjoyed it over the most professional dancers at the formosan aboriginal village.

One down side that you may wish to take note while considering this hotel is that the standard lodges are quite small. We are a family of 2A2C so we have four super single bed and it fits exactly from one end of the room to the other. In front of the bed is just about 1m of walking space with the main door and toilet door on each side. Having said that, it does not bother us 1 bit but may be an issue for others.

We had a great 2 nights at Leader Village. Very conveniently located high up in the mountains in the middle of Toroko Gorge. Rustic peaceful setting in bungalows with an indigenous tribe village feel to it. Bungalows are roomy, with fridge, mattresses on floor, flat screen TV, bathroom with excellent shower and all necessary bathroom supplies (toothbrush, soap, etc.). Staff service was good - on the last day I forgot my coat and the hotel phoned the taxi driver and we turned around to go pick it up. We booked the room at the information centre at Hualian Train Station that morning and everything was ready for us when we arrived. We went there by Toroko Tourist Shuttle, which drops you off in Buluowan where the hotel is located. You have to walk a little (about 5 mins) to get to the hotel from there. Or the hotel can arrange pick up and drop off from the airport / train station (200 NT pp). Our breakfast and dinner was included as a special weekday deal. Dinners were filling and offered us a good tasting of tribal food. However, I did not find breakfast that inviting. There were lots of dishes, but toast was the only Western offering. There was boiled sliced ham and cheese but this was of the very processed cheap variety - and was inedible. The hotel can arrange tours through the Toroko Gorge or one way pick up and drop off at places throughout the gorge. This allows you to spend time at each place doing the walks without rushing. We took the Toroko Tourist Shuttle however. Just one tip with the shuttle: it is probably not worth getting the all unlimited tide ticket of 250 per day (unless you are just spening 1 day in the gorge) as you would prbably not use this amount. It is better to just get single ride tickets between destinations. This also allows you more flexibility to catch the other tourist buses around that operate at different times. The hotel also arranges a "show" at night. This is quite informative and amusing as all the hotel staff take part and show case their talents. Although cheesy we quite enjoyed it as the staff seemed to be really getting into it! They also offer a "nature trail tour" although we only saw a frog and a snail on ours. Altogether the staff in this hotel really try to do their best for you and inform you about their culture and we really enjoyed our stay because of this and the lovely location.

The setting is perfect and the staff in unbelieveably helpful. Deciding to enjoy the views on the porch, I went to pull out my Kindle only to discover I had left it on the train. Not only did the front desk staff track down the train, conductor and cleaning staff to find it, they had it delivered to me the next day! That was amazing! The food was good, the views spectacular, and the rooms quite nice. Getting to enjoy the sound of the waterfall, the birds and butterflies, and the helpful staff made this a perfect place to stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a wonderful view.

Imagine living in a nicely furbished wood lodge surrounded by mountains around you. You can hear the birds chirping in the morning, while you lie in comfort in the air-conditioned wood cabin. It is a nice place for relaxation. The hotel is solely run by the aboriginal tribe (taroko tribe) and the people are all very polite and friendly. Tribal performances are conducted every night, and there is also a guide to take us to the trail at night to introduce various species of plants, insects and animals. If you want to visit the taroko gorge, the hotel can arrange a guide to take you on a day trip. THe food is excellent! We had wild boar and lamb, and everything is fresh and taste really good! If you want to visit the taroko gorge, spend a bit more and stay at least one night at Leader village, it is definitely worth it!
