“Aged but clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Staying at this hotel was a part of a tour package operated by a company in association with the TRA. We arrived at the hotel around 8 at night, and immediately received the keys to our room (a key with a steel card attached - the card is the key to our room's power). At first glance, the room is of adequate size for two, though the carpet and bathroom looks fairly dated at first glance. Fortunately, the room is clean and tidy, so at least that part was OK.

I heard that there was a spa on the second or third floor, but the front desk informed me that requires additional cost... so much for that.

The location of the hotel was quite close to the local night market. A short 10-minute walk will take you to the night market at Zhongshan/Gongzhen Road intersection with the renowned steam buns and dumpling stores.

The breakfast buffet on the first floor did not offer as much selection as other hotels, but was quite roomy so finding a place to sit wasn't that hard.

If you can, PLEASE make this your very, very, very LAST choice of hotel in Hualien!

We stayed here for one night last May 2012 and it was one night too long for this dreary, old and bad smelling hotel. The sheets were old and almost torn. The airconditioning unit was noisy and we felt like we were in a bar full of smoking patrons. Don't even bother to walk barefoot in the room as the carpeting was dusty and old. The bathroom tiles were worn out and the shower curtain smelled bad. Although the staff tried to be as courteous and helpful, the state of their hotel just didn't do them justice. Breakfast was okay if you don't mind MSG in your food.

The hotel was about 200-300 meters away from a bustling strip of night shops and 24hr Noodle shops. So it would be better to try your luck there than with the hotel's restaurant. A dozen steam pork buns or steamed dumplings would cost you only USD2!

Stayed at this hotel on 25th June 2011 with my family of four. The hotel was undergoing renovations. Room are big but dreary. On the night we were there there were tremors and the doors creaked. Bathrooms were very run down. There seems to be bedbugs because I was feeling itchy all over and could not sleep. Staff very friendly though. Send us to the airport.

Breakfast was average. Location wise it's walking distance to the shopping areas and there
is a very popular bao/dumplings shop 2 street away. Very good and cheap food around the area.

We stayed at the Marshall for one night as part of a tour. The hotel seems elderly, but the rooms and public spaces are nice enough. The neighborhood is pretty run down, and our room contained what seems to be a bedbug warning. That was enough to make us feel itchy, but we had no real bites. When we mentioned an MSG allergy, most of the breakfast choices were ruled out by conscientious staff. Dinner wasn't so limited for some reason. A great bonus with the dinner buffet is free draft beer.

Large hotel, central and minutes from town, clean. Good breakfast offer including Western choices. As holiday tourists we had a list of things to do that the hotel booked, and as we were there at the end of September tours were small and friendly. Touring was the reason for staying here, as we took a trip to Taraoko National Park, and saw some of the most amazing scenery in the world. Thankfully not too many westerners know its there! A ot of concentration in the area on the original Taiwanese people, there are shows you can go to to see traditional dancing and so on. And one of our favourite trips of our three week stay in Taiwan was walking along the river, climbing and jumping into the river, on a half day trip, great fun, made more so by our two guides, great guys who we bribed with beers to take us out that evening to see the rest of the town, well worth it. So the hotel is an ideal base for sightseeing, but if I was here on business I'd stay there too.
