“A few nice surprises”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

I had a few surprises during my stay at Permaculture.

Firstly, although most of the reviews about this guest house are written in Chinese, the owner communicates very well in English. In fact, my email inquiry was responded in English.

Secondly, my room was more spacious than I expected. A separate walk-in wardrobe provided the space for my luggage without cluttering the rest of the room. The bathroom had a bath and a shower area. From my room on the fourth level, I had a view of the mountains which was beautiful and serene under the blue skies.

Breakfast was another surprise. Congee with dishes is part of the Taiwanese breakfast, but having fish was special. Eggs and fruits were from the owner's farm and were delicious.

Location-wise, the guest house is located in a peaceful housing estate away from the city centre and train station. It is about 3-4 km from the Qi Xing Tan beach. The owner provided bicycles (with a torch, a map and thoughtful reminders on the direction through an industrial estate and along a road leading to an airport) free of charge for those cycling to there. From the city centre or the train station, the journey by car is about 5-10 min. Convenient shops and eating places are found at approximately 10min walk away.

Like many guests houses, the difference from staying in a hotel is the homely touch and communication with the owners and other guests. Having breakfast on the family dining table had a homely feeling. Through chatting with other guests and the owners, I gathered travel tips (such as bringing along a torch and umbrella for a trail in Taroko National Park), and of course, about the local culture.

Lastly, two tips for those going to the guest house: ask the owner for a taxi pickup from the train station (it is cheaper) and ask the owner in advance for a visit to his farm.

I came back from Hualien for more than 2 weeks, finally have time to write up my feeling.

I would have to say, this is a really great home-stay, Mr. Lee and his wife are very nice, they serve you very good traditional Chinese style breakfast, you know I am actually from Mainland China, so it's not that easy for me to say it's traditional Chinese food.

The building is very clean and comfort, more importantly, it's just 15 minutes biking from Chi Sing Tan. You can borrow bicycle from Mr.Lee, and it's for free!

Anyway, if you go to Hualien, I highly recommend you to stay in Permaculture!

Thanks for your review. Glad to know you like our breakfast.
How to provide healthy breakfast is one of our major missions. We are trying to use all local material and the advantage of Haulien, such as the fresh fish from the Pacific ocean.
