“Great view, patchy food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Wilderness Ranch is on a small hill quite close to Bayview Hotel. It is an old wooden house with great ocean views. We arrived about 12.30 and they gave us drinks menus rather than food menus. As all the food includes drinks this was a bit strange. We found the food varied in quality The vegetarian pasta was very good, whereas the lamb shank was only average. If you are staying at bay view then this is probably worth coming to, but if you are staying in Hualien than probably not worth the drive

“Goat farm near Hotel Bayview Hualien - The Wilderness Ranch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We had dinner on January 4 and 5, 2013 at the goat farm/Wilderness Ranch which was about 8 minutes’ walk south from Hotel Bayview Hualien along the cycling track, up pink-red wooden stairs or walk along the road.

We ordered single set meals each of braised herbal lambshank, grilled chicken thigh with herb and mushroom & black pepper sauce, French panfried salmon in orange sauce as the main course. A single set meal included garlic bread, mushroom & corn soup, dessert and drink and cost between NT380 to NT530.

We enjoyed our main course (the lambshank was tender and well-seasoned, the salmon in orange sauce was unusual with its tangy taste), the goat’s milk cheese cake and goat’s milk coffee which were included in the single set meal. When we returned to the restaurant for dinner the next evening, the owner and service staff noted that we were repeat customers. We ordered a goat’s milk ice cream which was not included in the single set meal and when served, were told it was complimentary. Now that’s great service for you.

There were other dishes for the main course such as beef spare ribs, pork knuckle. Pasta dishes – no gratin cost between NT400-420, gratin cost NT430. Hot Pot dishes cost NT 480-520. Unfortunately we had to leave for Taipei the next day and couldn’t try these dishes.

Some of their service staff spoke English and it was helpful that their menu was printed in both English and Chinese. They are opened from 8am till 10pm, but lunch is served from 11am till 2pm and dinner from 5pm till 8pm.

We were seated where the windows faced the ocean and thoroughly enjoyed having our dinners there. We would definitely return to the restaurant if we visited Hualien in future.
