“Hualien Soulfood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

Taiwanese clients brought us here. Time was tight due to pending train departure, and the queue outside this ramshackle foodstand/café made me think this wasn't going to happen, but we managed to grab a table inside and for 45 minutes experienced the most incredible lunch of goose, bird nest ferns, bamboo shoots, fois gras, fried oysters, and Taiwan beer which is the best. Forget the humble setting, forget the limp geese hanging on the wall, don't look too closely at the peeling paint - just listen to the owner, a most cheerful sort of guy who speaks English well, and let him guide you through his menu. It's gastronomically pleasing and you will have eaten true Taiwanese food prepared simply and very well. Does it get any better than this?

“Trying out goose meat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

Was cycling around town and it was getting dark and tired after a day trip to Taroko Gorge. The place was packed and we decided to check it out. And we were so happy with the service. Although it was so crowded and busy, the owners took time (instead of rushing through) to introduce their speciality dishes, which was the goose meat, fried local vegetables and fried fish roe. We have not tried goose before but its quite different from duck, without the strong gamey taste. So it was very well prepared. Despite all the hecticness, the lady owner spent time to talk to us on the history of Hualien and some favourite local spots. Such nice people. Food price is reasonable.

“beware of broken glass window!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Unlike the other reviewers, we would not recommend this at all. This was one of our worst meals in whole of Taiwan. We did not find the goose meat tender. Service was lacking and the restaurant looked worn out. Worst of all, we spotted broken window panes with the broken glass exposed right next to our seat. There was another window where the broken glass was "secured" with sticky tape. When we told the owner (who collected the bill) about the broken glass, he simply nodded and said that he knew but had difficulties engaging someone to repair it.
