“Fabulous place for a get-away -- outstanding staff, rooms, restaurants, amenities, value --- may I mention the fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2011

My husband and I wanted to get away from the city and to see Taroko Gorge. Silks Place was recommended by an acquaintance -- to whom I owe a big thank-you. When we arrived we upgraded from a mountain view suite to a Retreat Floor river view suite and spa package. What a brilliant idea!

The room and its lanai overlooked the river and a scenic pagoda and lovely grounds. The room and bathroom were spacious, quiet, clean, beautifully furnished, and the amenities were surprising in quality and quantity. The food was excellent. In the hotel spa we enjoyed massages and I had a first-class facial. There is a rooftop pool and Jacuzzis, tennis courts and fire pit – surrounded by spectacular views. The gorge tours -- an amenity included in our package -- were great: James and Debie were excellent guides. The staff -- May, James, Monica, Janet, and all the rest too numerous to mention -- are truly the most valuable assets of this resort. They were like family, very helpful, friendly, always cheerful, and they made us feel very comfortable and relaxed. We only had to ask about something and it was handled for us; sometimes we didn't even have to ask -- they intuitively knew what we wanted/needed or what would make our stay even more perfect. They assisted us on our trip to visit the town of Hualien and offered many suggestions. Our trip was so perfect and we were so reluctant to leave that we extended for a 4th night and would have liked to stay much longer.

We will definitely return at the first opportunity and will highly recommend this resort to anyone who indicates the slightest interest in going to the gorge. If you want peace and quiet, in lovely surroundings, with an attentive, friendly staff, this is the place to go. My recommendation: get a river view suite package on the Retreat Floor -- you won't regret it – and plan to stay as long as you possibly can.

My wife, son (11), daughter (9) and I stayed 2 nights at the Silks Place. Recently renovated, very well-appointed, perfect location. It's worth the extra money to stay on the Retreat Floor (we were in Room 22), because the prix-fixe dinners that come with the suite are absolutely stunning. We chose to eat the buffet breakfast rather than the morning's set menu, and it was excellent too. Most of the other guests were well-to-do Taiwanese. At the buffet we scoped out families with kids around the age of ours, and they had lovely international play dates, so we all had a blast.
Great hot tub under the stars, or with view to the river gorge beside.

I am staying at this very moment in a beautifully clean and luxurious room in this hotel. We were served a most delicious of many courses in a classy dining area. The young girl who served us (Lydia) was attentive and spoke English. We were given scented warm towels at the beginning of the meal and the decor was amazing.
Our room has a great view, extremely clean sheets and towels, excellent WiFi and all the bathroom amenities one could wish for. My sister and I have yet to try the day Spa or to sample breakfast, but if they match the standards we have met so far I know we will be more than satisfied.
We have been travelling now for 4 weeks through SE Asia and this is by far the best hotel we have stayed in.

The whole hotel was in minimalist design. The room has a glass wall overlooking the comfort room. If you prefer privacy, there are blinds to cover the glass wall. I appreciate the effort of making many activities for the children. My son had a great time in their activity center. They even have free activities like puppet story telling and etc. They also have table tennis, an indoor heated pool that my son enjoyed so much, a yoga room, and a roof deck that was really a winner for me. The roof deck offers view of the taroko gorge. It was really gorgeous! Only thing I didn't like during my stay was my dinner at their one and only chinese restaurant. The serving was ridiculously minimal. It was ridiculous that we laughed. Just don't go to that restaurant and your stay would be perfect.

With a kind of high price, this hotel should be,and can be better. Firstly, some parts of it need to be renovated, for example, the furniture in the room. Secondly, as a resort, put a dvd player in the room is not a bad idea, some of the guest like me has been to Taroko fro many times, just want to relax in the hotel, for most of the time. Thirdly ,the mattress and pillows are lousy, for a five stars hotel, the former is very hard, the latter have no supporting function at all...
Fourthly, the restaurants in the hotel are poor in variety.
Anyway, the Spa is pretty nice though.

We stayed at Silks for two nights. Overall - we would stay there again, it is hands down the best place to stay if you are doing more than a day trip to the Gorge. We hired a scooter, drove to Gorge and Dayuling.

I list the pros and could be better points below. The could be better points are relatively minor and we got a great deal for our stay (4239 NT for breakfast + dinner inclusive on the first night, booked through hotel, and 3300 NT without booked through hotelclub.com). It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring the gorge and the trails.

Pros
-We got upgraded to a river room which was amazing with the river directly infront of the balcony, that was a nice surprise!
-Beds were extremely comfortable
-Food was surprisingly good at the Wellesley. Buffet breakfast and dinner included in the package. The steak was excellent quality with a good selection of fruits, cold cuts and fresh juices. Breakfast was also excellent with lots of variety and fresh rolls & croissants
-Outdoor pool and jacuzzi has an amazing view - you can see the pagoda and perfect setting to relax
-Staff were polite and tried to be helpful. Restaurant service was excellent
-Overall hotel design was beautiful - very open, good use of natural light and well thought out. Once of the nicest hotels we stayed at in Taiwan.

Could be better:
-Wireless connection was a slow which caused problems using skype
-On the second night we asked if we could upgrade to the package price to include dinner and pay 4239 instead, but were told no..we would have to pay the full price for dinner. perhaps misunderstanding
-Our room key kept on getting demagnetised for whatever reason (3 times in a day - when we went back from breakfast, swim and dinner) and the staff suggested that we should keep our mobile phones away, but we pointed out we just had just returned from the pool and just had our bathroom
-I understand that we can't expect staff to speak perfect English but was fustrating when they could not understand simple requests such as changing a bathrobe, or asking if they could help inquire about whether a trail was open or not
-Parts of the hotel could do with an upgrade. Fitness centre was too dark to use after sunset..and limited equipment. The bathroom was a bit old in our room

Arrived from Taipei with my son, took a chance there would be a room available. It was SO
wonderful, we were treated exceptionally well, the room was very comfortable, clean and had everything we could have wanted. Our price included 2 6-course dinners and an excellent breakfast with more than enough choices for any picky eater. This was an unexpected surprise and I would recommend it highly. The swimming pools and spas were another great treat! The price was completely reasonable and I would be honored to stay there again. They also offer a 3-hour guided (with a driver) park tour for around $15.00/person which is quite good (thanks Debbie!)
