“Excellent guesthouse for the family.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

I booked this minsu about 2 mths before my trip and Andy (owner of the minsu) provided excellent advise on train bookings and Hualien tours.

Andy;s wife, Mdm Zhang picked up from the train station and even drove us to buy packet lunches.

The room that we booked was on the 3rd floor. It was spacious for the 3 of us (2 adults and one 4 yr old kid). Do visit the farm just behind the house to look at the pig, goats, chickens and turkey. It would be a good experience for the city kids. At night, ask Andy to bring you back to the farm to spot some fireflies.

In the evenings, they will drove you into the Hualien town for you to spend a few hrs there on your own. Remember to ask them to drive you to a shop to buy some fireworks and sky lanterns to let go on the guesthouse frontyard. We bought both as we do not intend to go to Pingxi in taipei for the sky lanterns.

They also have good contacts with drivers who can drive you around for the tour around Hualien. .

Lastly they were renovating their front yard when we were there. There were some small inconveniences but they made it up with their hospitality. By now the renovations should be completed and you will see a nicer living room and kitchen

Mr Andy is an excellent host and very (grand)fatherly. He has his own vegetable farm, some geese, ducks, roosters, turkey, rabbits, goats, a pig and 2 dogs.
There is also a mini library in the minsu and bicycles available for rental.
A rocky beach nearby within 1 minute's walk.
The best thing is you can play with fireworks in their front porch.

A pity we couldn't stay longer due to a last minute change in our schedule.

A little far from town but we will come back again.

Room Tip: Mr Andy can help to transport to/from the minsu using his private car. But I think transport is not...

We stayed in Hualien Bay for 1 nite in Dec 12. It was a great experience. We got to know that the Suhua road was closed 2 days before we were due to arrive in Hualien. We called Andy from Yilan for advice as we were driving and he was really kind and offered various alternatives and even bothered to help us check for train tickets etc!

As we were a few days into our long trip, we had a no of clothes to wash. Any's wife offered us to use their washing machine :) I was so glad!

The minsu is near to the sea. We had a nice quiet evening hanging out there and staking up the stones :) At the back of the minsu, there were chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, goats and a pig. My daughter had the chance to help to feed them so she really enjoyed herself.

After dinner, we spent some time in the dining area chit chatting with Andy. He shared some Math tips with my daughter and taught her how to calculate which day of the week given a date. Apparently he used to be a Math teacher before his retirement.

To be honest, the minsu is not as new and well kept compared to others we have stayed... BUT the hosts' friendliness and kindness were excellent.

We also used the taxi driver 李安生 recommended by Andy for our second part of our trip (Taroko Gorge, Wuling Farm, Hehuansan, Cingjing, Sun Moon Lake). He is a very careful, responsible and honest driver. He took the trouble to accompany us for some of the tracks which were more dangerous in the Taroko Gorge in view of falling rocks :) He ensured that there are water in the taxi for us and he even bought us a box of muahchi as a gift! What else can we ask for?

Overall we enjoyed ourselves very much!

We instantly felt at home! The owners are adorable and will give you good advices on how to get to places, what to visit, help you to arrange the activities etc...

The minsu is very cosy, the rooms are large and well decorated. From outside you might wonder "where are we" because it seems a bit lost in the land BUT actually it is only 5mins drive from the "city" centre and 1mins walk from the ocean.

The place is peaceful, well maintained.

Enjoy!
Celine

Room Tip: I guess that the rooms which are not facing the street would be the most peaceful...

The other reviewers have described well the hospitality offered by Andy and his artist wife. I would like to talk about the menagerie that is behind the minsu.

Apart from pangpang and niuniu (their two dogs), there was a pig (named and not to be eaten, I was assured), goats, turkeys, chickens and ducks. All animals were kept in generous enclosures built amid a herb and flower garden. It was by no means prettified - it was clearly a working farm - but reasonably clean and very pleasant.

Visitors to this minsu should not miss this.

Room Tip: Keep an open mind - this is not a 5-star hotel but it offers an experience no starred hotel can.
