“Great getaway experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

Hotel Bayview definitely deserves to be the Traveller's Choice for 2 consecutive years (2012-2013). Whatever great about them has already been said and you can expect the same warm hospitality when you arrive.

The pluses: Transport to and fro the hotel for arrival and departure (due to its location away from the city centre), Wifi in the hotel room, scenic views (if you book the ocean view room), free 24 hour coffee bar, free bicycle rental to cycle along the scenic Chisingtan and wonderful service from the hotel boss, Juan. Juan was extremely helpful - he helped us with the bicycle rental, provided us on advice on where to eat around the hotel and best of all, he speaks and writes excellent English. On a sidenote, I think Juan also upgraded my double room to a bigger room, although there was 2 rooms left. Thank you Juan!

The minuses: You need to spend about 100-200NT (Hualien taxi meter starts at ~100NT) to get a cab out of the hotel to the city centre, which is about 10-15min drive. If you're looking for a beach escape, this should not be a problem, just that food options will be extremely limited. It is thus ideal to rent a scooter to get around. Alternatively, you can choose to stay here for 1-2 days, and stay at a hotel/minsu located in the city centre for the next few days, just like we did.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Bayview an the service was absolutely impeccable. Good job, Juan!

Room Tip: Book early for the ocean view room.

This is not a 5 star hotel but it rates a 5 considering it is in a fishing village and very convenient to the Taroko Gorge etc. After spending much time reviewing hotels, i booked a couple of nights at the Hotel Bayview for my daughter and myself. It was fully booked but i persisted in checking with them for cancellations and was able to get 2 nights but had to move from one room to the other. The staff made this happen while we were touring the Gorge. If you have a choice, balcony rooms are the best, mountain side windows are small and it is more like a city/village/highway view with mountains in the background. The second floor balcony's are less than desirable because you cannot see the ocean sitting down because the wall is too high. Staff very helpful.

Room Tip: Mentioned above.

The bayview hotel is very nice. Close to Qixintan, bicycle rental is free. It's nice to cycle around, grab an ice cream and walk by the 'beach'. The beach is mainly stones and not sand. Breakfast is simple but sufficient. If you need to go to town, will have to take taxi. The hotel also provide free transport to/from train station but not during odd hours. Overall it's good.

We arranged pickup service at Hualien Station, and were pleased to see two of the staff there waiting promptly for us. They helped to carry our luggage to the van too. It was a short drive to the hotel.

The hotel looks beautiful, and the view from the hotel room was even more beautiful. Try to book an ocean-view room with balcony! It will be worth the extra charges. You don't need to go to the beach to watch the sunrise or admire the ocean, You can simply view it from your room, or even from your bed. Imagine waking up 5am early in the morning and you can simply admire the awesome sunrise from your bed.

Staff greeted us when we left or returned to the hotel.

Something worth mentioning is that the bed was big and comfortable, and they provided two bottles of mineral water for each pax (from my experience, most hotel provides one bottle only).

Some precautions to take note. Don't place your food on the table. It attracted ants within minutes.. Also, be careful of the electric kettle. At the first usage, the water was stained and it was oily. I suppose the previous user used it to cook a non-water food?

Other than that, everything was perfect.

We did not want to leave this place, the stay was so lovely! . We arrived by train from taipei and was promptly picked up by the hotel staff in a car. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. They will call for taxis ( there is a special rate negotiated with the hotel so if you have a mobile , you can call the cab once you are done in town, and they will pick you up and drop you off at the hotel at the same discounted rate) .
The room ( we have the mountain view, family room) was very pleasantly decorated. Everything was clean. The towels were a little worn but clean. The beds were comfortable and of a good size. There was more than enough space for us 4 adults. The nice thing was the toilet and the bath were separate. The price was VERY reasonable.

There was a coffee room with computer on the first floor - the biscuits were amazing. really. we couldn't stop eating them :P . The breakfast was of a good variety with good vegetarian options - mostly chinese food tho' .

it was raining cats and dogs when we arrived and we came quite late so we were directed to a nearby " museum" for lunch. The food was quite yummy ( we had the noodles and the octopus balls), we didn't get to try the famous Mambo Fish which one of the neighbouring restaurants apparently sells. you could consider trying it. It is supposedly a speciality dish here. The museum was dedicated to the Fishing ( which is one of the main livelihoods). We bough the local black muah chee from here ( it was heavenly!)

There is nothing much else near the hotel except a gorgeous beach. It's a pebbly one tho' so so don't expect to sit around on sand and sun tan. The hotel provides free bicycles, so we took a morning cycle on our last day which was beautiful. If you go up to the top level of thehotel , the view up there is also gorgeous.

The staff spent a lot of time patiently briefing us about places to eat in the town. One of the staff members speaks excellent English. Very personalised service . My email enquiries prior to arriving were answered very promptly and they were helpful in suggesting taxi drivers if you are looking to hire one for a day tour. They can also arrange this for you.

I'm definitely booking way ahead next time to avoid disappointment. And I would probably request a sea view room juz to complete the sea side experience. It is quite a fair distance from the town but if you plan to kick back and relax away by the sea, this is the place to be.
My only gripe would be someone was smoking on our floor ( although the rooms have a sign behind the door that state- no smoking) and you could smell it in the corridor.

Stayed 2 nights here 2 days ago. Whale watching at 3.30pm on day 1 booked by hotel. Watched the sunrise on day 2 at 5am on the beach just outside the hotel, it was beautiful. Taxi fare is more expensive in Hualien than in Taipei. Must take the hotel's advice to book a taxi instead of flagging one on the street. Receive 25% discount if call to book one.

What else can I add? Service was top rate. Room was nice and clean albeit on the small side. Location was excellent if you like to stay near the sea and listen to sounds of the waves. Nice decent selection at breakfast, both western as well as Taiwanese porridge with various condiments).

Free rental of bikes from first light till last light (from 5+ in morning till 5+ evening during summer). There were four types of bikes to choose from (Adult - guys, Adult -ladies, children bike, two-person bike (adult + child). Easily more than 30 bikes in the shop to choose from.

Family mart convenience store just around the corner.

Situated right on the (pebble) beach (Chishingtan)... with excellent view of sea and mountains. 10-15 mins drive to Hualien town where they are plenty of cheap food options and shops around every corner (contact lenses are extremely cheap).

Definitely will stay here when back in Hualien.
