The best preserved medieval castle in the world. Period. Try to spot nearby castles Tartous/Marqab) for example) from the towers, it's possible in clear weather. You'll need some transportation to get there.

“Qasr Kharana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

The castle was built in the early Umayyad period and it's worth spending an hour visiting.

For the four of us the real highlight of our visit to the castle was the Bedouin owner of the tent situated in the parking lot where we have been offered freshly brewed local tea by him and who has been the epitome of the local hospitality and genuine politeness - a visit definitely not to be missed!

“Best preserved crusader castle in middle east.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

This castle is the most complete one left in the middle east for 2 reason, 1) it was not taken in a seige but surrendered after the knights negotiated a surrender 2) the muslims respected the knights for their bravery and took the castle over not pulled it down.

The view from the outer wall is all the way to Lebanon and the inner wall is complete as well. The chapel and the main hall are still in good shape as is the toilet drops (holes in the inner wall that allowed the excretions to drop into the moat). There are other rooms here that have different uses but are not clear but there are at least ovens to cooks for the crusaders, stables for the horses and a tower for the lookouts.
