“Stylish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

I have nothing but praise for the Fort Printers Hotel with its very high standard of service, spacious and beautifully furnished rooms/bathrooms, and delicious cuisine. It was a pleasure to dine in the courtyard restaurant by the pool – for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu is not extensive but the quality and variety of food was exceptional. Unfortunately the pool is on the small side – not suitable for anything but a “dip” – but there is a reciprocal arrangement with “sister” hotel Frangipani Tree Resort in Thalpe (15 minutes drive) where you can relax in the tropical gardens and swim in the larger pool.

It was a joy to stay in this stylish hotel in the heart of Galle Fort in January 2013. Its lovely interior is so cool and calm – but step outside and you are immediately “hit” by the vibrant and colourful atmosphere of the Fort area. This hotel is certainly a great base from which to wander the streets and lanes of the Fort area – to explore both the historic aspects plus a great range of interesting shops, (many quite “up-market” and selling an array of high quality goods and souvenirs - unlike many other tourist destinations where it’s difficult to find anything other than “kitsch”). It’s also well worth the few minutes walk to the bustling main Galle township – especially to check out the fruit/vegetable, spice and fish markets. A day trip from Galle to a number of popular coastal beaches is easy by local bus or tuk tuk or by transport by the hotel.

This beautifully converted old factory is an awesome base to explore the Galle Fort near main streets with lots of great shops and good restaurants within walking distance to the lighthouse and other main attractions. Loved the personal service, and the helpful and attentive staff. Gorgeous clean space, with tasteful interior. Wished we could have stayed longer.

We wanted a bit of a blow out last couple of nights in Sri Lanka as it was one of our birthdays so we chose Fort Printers. The hotel gave us a good deal on a short notice direct booking undercutting Agoda's price. The hotel is an excellent conversion of a beautiful colonial house with two nearby annexes which have also had a similar makeover. Our room at the top of the across the road annex was spacious and airy - they've made no attempt to recreate a colonial feel; instead using modern design to create simple but luxurious rooms. The room was accessed via a lovely sitting area with wifi and water, tea and coffee facilities nearby. A real pleasure to come back to after a day out and about in the hot and humid environs of Galle. We were on a B&B basis so had a lovely table served breakfast in the courtyard under the frangipani tree overlooking the pool. The staff were attentive without being ever present and happy to provide help or information as needed. It was no problem for me to borrow the hotel's Mac and printer to do boarding card printouts.

My girlfriend and I stayed here as the last part of our trip to Sri Lanka. We stayed in the New Building across the road. With an amazing floating staircase and the most comfortable bed we had experienced throughout Sri Lanka. It was a spacious room and the bath tub was to die for!

The members of management Peter and Rohann made our stay memorable as they prepared a cake for my girlfriends birthday as well as providing us endless advice about the Fort in Sri Lanka.
The food was delicious and I would reccomend this hotel for anyone!

Like the previous reviewer we found the printer's somewhat chaotic and were very disappointed with the failure of the Inn to deliver on the rooms we had booked through Agoda. Via Agoda 5 rooms were (and still are) advertised (which appear to be original rooms in the main section of the inn) and we paid the extra to have 1 of the 2 deluxe suites, specifically requesting the Headmasters rather than the Prefect's, which we stated as our second choice. On arrival on the 25 July they informed us that the Headmaster's room was only available for 1 night, we therefore reluctantly agreed to have 1 night there and move for our 2nd night, the last night of our 2 week Sri Lanka holiday (turns out the room was taken on the 2nd night by a member of the hotel's management - you'd have thought they would have prioritised their customers). The Headmaster's suite was exactly what we wanted to end our holiday, it was superb (although the soft furnishings are looking a little tired). However, on moving on the 2nd day we expected to move to the Prefect's, only to find we had been shunted into a brand new room in an adjoining villa next door. Whilst this room was fairly good (apparently also termed as "deluxe" by the hotel) it was not what we had booked, expected or wanted for our last night on holiday (this was the most expensive place we stayed at in Sri Lanka and not as luxurious as some others) . The room had a glazed concrete floor which was very dusty and initially no hot water, when we got hot water the shower failed to operate properly, we were given a key to another brand new room across a courtyard to shower in, whilst this had hot water the drain failed to work properly. It appears that the Inn is expanding rapidly but has not advertised that fact on Agoda, as well as the new villa we spent the second night in, there was also a new block across the road, which we were also shown a room in and sounds like the block the previous reviewer mentioned. We were given a free dinner on the second night as compensation, but this didn't even cover the extra cost of the difference between the deluxe and ordinary suite rates (and we had to pay for our 3 glasses of house wine as well!). The staff were really friendly and helpful, the food very good and the ambiance in the hotel superb. When we came to the check out they had got our bill wrong! They had added an extra meal, a glass of white wine and a bottle of beer which we most definitely hadn't had! We spent an afternoon at the beach in their sister inn at Thalpe, this was superb with direct access to a tropical beach from a gorgeous infinity pool and great staff and managers. So overall a great inn, with good friendly staff and a great facility to access the beach, but badly let down by the underhand swapping of the booking we had made, sadly leaving a somewhat sour taste at the end of a great holiday in Sri Lanka - make sure you are actually going to get what you think you are booking and don't end up disappointed and messed around as we were, we consider the inn is taking bookings for deluxe suites based on advertising of the Headmaster's and Prefect's rooms, but pushing guests into less attractive and not nearly as characterful and charming brand new rooms in adjoining properties.

Room Tip: Confirm by phone with the hotel which room you will be given - they tried to blame given us a room o...

We had very mixed feelings regarding this hotel. The position within the walls of the old fort is very convenient for shops, bars and sightseeing (although be aware that most gift shops close at 7pm and only open about 10a.m. - tricky if you're on a tight time schedule.)
Our reception was a little chaotic - there appeared to be some confusion over the rooms booked and the configuration of the bedding arrangements. However, our party of six was finally accommodated in three rooms across the road from the main hotel. I was a little disappointed by this as originally we had been booked into the Headmaster's Suite. However, two of the three double rooms were large and stylish if a little dark with enormous bathrooms with free standing baths. (Toiletries were very limited - not even a shower cap) The third room was much smaller and up a flight of steps with no sides or handrail - dangerous for small children or anyone suffering from vertigo!
It soon became apparent that the candles in the bathroom had a practical as well as romantic use when the power to our room failed four times in the space of 45 minutes, plunging us into total darkness. On the fourth occasion this happened we were offered another room in the main building but as this was much smaller and darker we decided to stay put.
Dinner was, similarly, not straightforward. We were the only ones eating in the echoing dining room (we could have eaten in the courtyard but this was not recommended due to showery conditions). Several dishes (the ones we would have chosen) were unavailable resulting in my daughter and I simply opting for a bowl of, admittedly delicious, pumpkin soup. My sister in law's jumbo prawns were however enormous and cooked to perfection. As for drinks we should have stuck to beers and juices. Again many of the bottles on the wine list were unavailable and whilst we ordered a Malbec, it was a Cabernet Sauvignon that was delivered to the table. No real apology was forthcoming - just a non committal shrug.
Breakfast the following morning was a far more satisfactory meal - served in the sunlit idyllic courtyard by the small, frangipani shaded swimming pool.
As in many establishments in Sri Lanka, the smiling, friendly staff were the hotel's best asset and made up for a lot of the shortcomings. This beautifully appointed and atmospheric hotel could be absolutely stunning with just a little more attention to detail. As it is, given the problems encountered, should I return to Galle I would probably give this hotel a miss in favour of The Galle Fort which is equally convenient and characterful, although without the 'boutique' tag.

Clearly the highlight of our trip. Arrived after a couple of long days on the road and were spoilt rotten by the staff. Great contemporary renovation of a beautiful historic building. The ambience achieved whilst maintaining the link to the past is very commendable. Rooms were large, clean, comfortable and boast a sound argument for the best shower in the world! Galle is beautiful and this hotel is a must.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Arts room and our boys in the Headmasters room. Both exceptional.
