“My favorite Aman. It has a special magic quality unlike the others.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2010

Came here on a whirl wind tour through Asia with my friend. I have been to about 4 Amans at this point. Out of all the hotels we stayed in on this trip, if I had to choose one place to return to, it would be the Amangalla in Galle SriLanka.

Here's what I liked about my stay:

- The staff, they are incredibly helpful, friendly, professional, and hospitable. The level of attentiveness and communication was ideal. Not too much, yet they were always accessible as you needed.

- The food, was superb and the setting is casual refined. For breakfast, you must try the "hoppers" and for dinner go for the local menu where they give you an amazing array of food in white bowls, there are about 10-12 different smaller portioned courses that they deliver all at once. Fantastic flavors and utterly delicious!

- Visit the library. It's comfortable, peaceful, and perfect for connecting to the internet and getting some work done. The BEST part of the library is the lower connecting room where there are photos and memorabilia of "Nester", a lady who was the owner of this hotel before it became an Aman. There is fantastic story of the property and the previous owner if you are lucky enough to get the scoop.

- The hydrotherapy spa is lovely. There is a sauna, steam room, shower, a hot mini pool and a cold pool to take dips in. They will close off the area completely for your privacy which was a nice added surprise. The feeling you get is like you are the honored guests of a magnificent and historical vacation home and you may make yourself completely at home.

- Ruby, the hotel hot dog, is seen working among the staff or lounging about waiting for her mistress, the hotel manager. She is a friendly face that adds to the ambiance.

- Hotel is located in an old forte which is so cool. It's like walking straight into another time period.

Overall, I was mesmerized with the character and the magic of Amangalle. This Aman wins in terms of the having the most Magic!

P.S. - if you are thinking of having a wedding somewhere in this part of the world, you should seriously consider having your wedding here. This would be an Amazing place to have your reception and here it's something like $20k US dollars for the whole party reception. Which is quite attainable. If you do, please send me an invite. This would be a dream wedding location that everyone will remember.

Although we actually didn't stay in one of the rooms, we spent several days at Amangalla, enjoying the wonderful service and the delicious food.
The atmosphere here can only be described as colonial, peaceful, elegant and simply relaxing. Just lean back in the comfortable chairs (some royal might have occupied that seat some hundred years ago...), let the amazingly friendly serve the most delicious high tea (here: excellent Ceylon tea, unforgettable scones) and relax in the surroundings that take you back two centuries.

We just loved it in here. The prices for the rooms were a little steep for us, the food though was relatively cheap for a luxury place like Amangalla.

We arrived after a rather hairy helicopter flight from Colombo in a monsoon but the beauty of the hotel and the warmth of the welcome very quickly made us forget the ride and enjoy our surroundings.
The hotel is beautifully restored and uses much of the furniture and fixtures from the old NOH that pre-dates it. Rooms are immaculate and furnished in the best taste, food is excellent, the pool is a heavenly cool green rather than a blinding turquoise, the spa offers great treatments but what makes this place is the courteous, friendly and efficiently attentive staff. The Manager was away when we were there but the place ran like clockwork and there was evident pride in providing a great service for guests.
Galle itself is delightful but it's attractions are limited. For this reason, we had originally
intended to stay for only three nights before six days at Amanwella but decided to head back to Galle after only two nights on the south coast. On returning, we felt like we'd come home. Our butler Prasanna - a prince among men, even gave up his day off when he heard we were returning.
This is a truly outstanding hotel rather than a resort - as a result, a little different from other Aman establishments but with all of the service and it's own individual style and charm.
We couldn't recommend it highly enough to travelers who want the very best of the old and the new.

We only had supper here.

Very smart, grand conversion of a large property inside Galle Fort and was quite a special evening as one of our party played at the grand piano in the main hall in which the dining room is situated at one end.

This hotel does not have the classic front-to-back layout of the Galle Fort Hotel (verandah, reception hall, courtyard with pool with rooms around) and you felt they had put in a lot of room capacity (perhaps to pay for the grand restoration?) so the large (and attractive) swimming pool was right at the back, down a couple of staircases and right-angled turns. The building does not draw you in like GFH.

That said, service was good as was the food even if, on a per head basis, more expensive than the GFH.

As mentioned, the younger members enjoyed its classical and grand form & that it is clearly "four seasons"-style. The older members found it just a little too distanced / aloof? I suppose it is quite formal, which is a bit of a juxtaposition given its surroundings.

We cannot comment (obviously) on the rooms.

As a nit picky person who expects the best I have nothing but admiration for the way the Amangalla is managed. The service was flawless and discreet. Attention to detail - perfect and considered ( my daughter loved her wooden carved elephant gift handwrapped on her pillow) and my husband appreciated the large bottle of aftersun in the bathroom) .
The suite was spotless, very tasteful and extremely comfortable.
Dining was a pleasurable experience with an interesting menu that surpassed our expectations and well presented food served in a chic but relaxed atmostphere. Staff were attentive but again in the background.
The library/ reading room is beautifully presented and the butlers were on hand to ensure that any requirements were met despite camping out with books in this quiet zone.
The fabulous poolside cabanas were ideal for privacy and lounging with discreet attentive staff to ensure a supply of iced water and towels.
In conclusion , as a traveller who regularly uses the Four Seasons and Park Hyatt this has to be one - if not the best hotel I have ever stayed.

Visiting Galle earlier this year we had a drink on the lovely veranda and decided to revisit this lovely place.
In August we were back and stayed a night at Amangalla; and we decided to come back again later this year for a longer stay.
For the experience of staying at Amagalla is out of this world: from the very moment of arrival till the inevitable moment of departure we were surrounded by the most attentive and gentle staff we could imagine. The hotel is really beautiful, from the splendid entrance to the relaxing design swimmingpool area. From the airy corridors to the magnificent spa wing. Our room, a suite on the top floor, was a paradise of good taste and extreme comfort. Drinks on the romantic veranda were a joy and the diner was perfect in every course.
We can really recommend a stay at Amangalla and look forward to be back later this year !

I went to the Amangalla for afternoon tea to celebrate my mum's 60th birthday. We were staying nearby and chose the Amangalla as the building is in a lovely, breezy but tropical location in Galle Fort. Whilst the interior is really stunning, and the tea itself was good, we were treated like second class citizens. In the middle of our relaxing tea, the staff decided to start polishing the floor with a noisy machine - which they proceeded to turn off, everytime someone of white skin walked through the dining room so that they did not have to listen to it. When i asked the sri lankan waiter why they were doing this while we were trying to eat - he just laughed, presumably because he thought i was being cheeky expecting better service from a top class hotel. As a British-born Sri Lankan, i was disgusted to find we were being treated this way by people of the same skin colour and when paying tourist prices! I would never normally call the race card but it became so obvious that we were being treated differently and like we were somehow less worthy, that i feel compelled to write and say something. Dont stay here if you are not white - you're money is much better spent in one of the many other lovely hotels and villas in Galle

Amangalla, Manager at Amangalla, responded to this review, August 25, 2010
I would like to offer my apologies for your very disappointing tea experience at Amangalla. I am personally very upset as we pride ourselves in treating all our guests as VIPs, wherever they come from. We welcome guests from all over the world, as well as Sri Lankans from home and abroad. I can assure you this is the first time I have heard of something like this and it does not represent the nature or spirit of our team. I hope that you will return to Amangalla and allow me to personally meet you.
