SPent two days here at the end of our two weeks in Sri Lanka...."nothing is too much trouble" and it wasn't!!! Wonderful hotel with great staff in a great location within the Fort. Don't bother eating anywhere else ..the food is fantastic, good choice and good wine list. My husband was keen to watch the rugby on tv so they organised a room for him to watch it, nothing too much trouble! Location is ideal.. Next door is church and post office and steps leading to Ramparts for an evening stroll..HAs to be one of the best in Sri Lanka! GReat pool too!

Yet again the Aman group pull off a beautiful property that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

This hotel is chic, serene and sophisticated and manages to take old world Ceylon style and bring it into the 21st century.

We were fortunate in that it appeared that hardly anyone else was there. At times I had the pool with its hushed surrounding areas all to myself. It was glorious. It was also a joy to relax and make use of the slightly quirky library. When was the last time you found a Liberace record in a library?

The staff on the whole were a joy to look at, and service and food were exceptional and reasonably priced.

We can highly recommend the wonderful barber - you'd be hard pushed to find a more charming Sri Lankan gentleman who's family of barbers go back generations. We shall remember him forever.

It is true that the hotel does appear to be a tad expensive considering the location - Galle may be pleasant but you can exhaust what's on offer in an afternoon. However, once you've passed over the Amamgalla threshold you can see what you are paying for, especially if you stay at the hotel during a quiet period. It's just a shame that there isn't a little more on offer within walking distance once outside the hotel. However, I suspect the majority of visitors also go and spend time at the heavenly Amanwella too.

being a professed aman-junkie, my wife and i travelled from los angeles to spend 10 days in sri lanka and stay at the two amans...it was a VERY long trip, but both properties are wonderful in their own ways. the galle property is something from a british novel; you can feel the history in the walls. the staff is great, the rooms are classical and luxurious, and the food just delicious (the chef made my wife vegan indian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner!). if you are nearby, and have an extra ten days or so to tour a magical island, then this is the trip and this is the hotel. you can stay nowhere else. if you look around you and realize where you are and how far this country has come, you will feel blessed to be at the aman...(p.s. we visited in may, the shoulder season, and were almost the only guests. the weather was great, and it was like being in private villa)...(p.s.s..stay away from rooms facing street, very noisy in morning!)

Room Tip: stay away from rooms facing street...best to be near pool...

First of, One has to pay homage to the architects of its1863 past and the 2006 present who have brought this old world grandeur to life. As well as the contractors & laborers who have toiled to retain a bygone Dutch era through the refurbishment & retrofitting of antique original fixtures - turn taps of early 1900's, wooden staircases, photographs from 1800's - to bring it to its current glory.

Glide up the 1863 building entrance steps to be offered with a smile and a cold face towel, carry on through the open-air but opulent high-ceiling common dining room and large living hall, feeling the fresh cool draft from the ceiling fans and you will note at once the impeccable utmost care taken to create guest comfort in resplendent architectural beauty. Decor is thoughtfully designed with dark teak wood quality furnishing, fresh white columns & walls and lovely lilies & freesias simply adorning side tables, walkways, library and rooms. Well-stocked with lavish stylized amenities - citrus scented toiletries, mozzie repellent, welcome iced tea, understated stationary & postcards, Wedgwood-style stainless steel ornaments, bowl of plump fresh mango fruits, singhalese bedtime well-wishes placed on bed at turn-down service, afternoon rainforest tea of scones fresh local jam & cream served anywhere on the hotel grounds you so choose, Bose system with jazz albums by favorites such asJazz greats Miles Davies, Frank Sinatra to choose from, a superb Library with intriguing titles to take you on a literary journey into the age-old world of SriLanka hours on end and personalized service unparalleled even by the world-renown St.Regis hotels. All this, while retaining the aplomp of colonial richness & heritage with the as good as new feel expected from a refreshing, relaxing hotel experience.

The hotel's hospitality standards too plays its part to bring forth this old fort building with befitting attitude respectful of its past and purpose imbued with historical pride well felt by its guests.
Synonymous to the Aman brand, and perhaps even better, the butler service is impeccable in this Aman establishment with Butler Mr. Nalin. If he is the peg for what and who Sri Lanka is, I am sold in to the warmth, genuine nature and acute mind of this fine gentleman. Thank you for the lukewarm bubble bath drawn in timely fashion after dinner, your willingness to accept out of the ordinary requests and the intuitiveness to think one step ahead of guest's needs is what every other luxury competitor establishment needs to set them apart.

The Amangalla spa facilities are crazy wonderful. Never before in my travel search for the perfect luxury hotel have I experienced relaxation facilities that can outbeat its already unsurpassed service and rooms. Herein lies a killer eXperience. The warm hydrotherapy pool has to be a top-end make and design with varying pressure points to heal your tired upper, lower back, feet, thighs, calf and neck area or just top to to back options to choose from. Stark designer interior - ex new-world contemporary tiles or low grade mass finishing, thank you very much - with candles all around and complete solitude privacy. Did a couple of hero dips into the cold dip pool too to top off the hydrotherapy session.

Swimming pool cabanas and the landscaped architecture around the pool remind me of an Aryan past where stone blocks were used in wall formation, a la Angkor Wat. In more recent times, we could also appreciate Sri Lankan architecture as per Geoffrey Bawa in this silent 20m pool sanctuary. No gym unfortunately though, but they do have an open-air yoga meditation house on its garden grounds.

I was presented with a gift as a keepsake on check-out but needless to say, this was a home I would never want to leave.
For those familiar with Geoffrey Bawa's garden within a garden concept, Amangalla as I dare say, is the home within this garden.

Lot Stock & Barrel full of luxe traveller goodness.

We ended our tour here at this Boutique Hotel, as a traveler with my family, as I want to enjoy and give the best 3 nights at this hotel was excellent. Even though it is a bit away from the beach our guide / driver was superb in assisting us and been gentle and for showing us the best in Galle. I did feel like a i was back in the colonial era, I'm not that fancy when it comes to my history but the feel of this hotel does take you back in time. Staying here for a few days before our departure was ideal, thank you Superlink Tours.

Barring a butler who wasn't particularly helpful/interested, this was a fantastic stay.(we didn't have any particular need for him during the stay, so did not miss him as much!)

Beautifully done rooms - old colonial glamour blended in with 21st century amenities. Sitting on our private verandah listening to the birds/insects, felt we were somewhere remote rather than the centre of Galle! Fantastic bathrooms and especially liked the separate tub/shower setup.

The pool is spectacular, drinks while watching the sunset from the upstairs balcony are a must, the food is very good (could have a bit more variety though) and the hotel staff are constantly on their toes trying to sense your needs before they arise!

Galle fort itself is a truly unique place - we enjoyed walking around the fort, checking out the little boutiques and stores and enjoying the unique blend of Dutch & Asian architecture. We would highly recommend a meal at Mama's - some of the best food we ate on the trip.

Would definitely recommend for the old world experience but if looking for pure relaxation, I would opt for Amanwella.

My wife and me stayed three nights in this great place. The hotel as a building is already worthwhile the trip. We had a fantastic room with views over the old town and the bay.
The private butler was very helpfull and kind as all staff is.
The old town is worth visiting for about a full day and a trip in the region was nice.
The restaurant serves good food for.
We will come back when we will go to Ammanwelle again.
