“Old and Charming”

A lovely cliff top hotel with great views. The service is excellent, food is delicious and the rooms comfortable. The antique furniture in the common area with the fish tank is quite quaint and unique.

We have stayed at the Closenberg a couple of times in the past 2 years, usually after a few days spent in Yala National Park. You can expect very comfortable beds with great pillows in clean and spacious rooms providing plenty of old world charm. The bathrooms are clean and well appointed too. The rooms have either a nice private verandah or balcony overlooking some very pretty cliff-top gardens and the bay; this Hotel has an idyllic raised location on a promontory overlooking the sea. One of the most memorable sunrises awaits you from your bedroom/ verandah ... if you set your alarm for 5:40 or so!

The food was reasonable if not outstanding while the staff were helpful if a bit on the formal side.

As to value for money, its fairly expensive for tourists. As with many places in Sri Lanka, tourists seem to pay many times the price that locals pay to stay here. While that may be understandable the magnitude of that difference is very considerable - more progressive establishments in the Country are not so divergent in their charging.

The final word on Closenberg - if you have money to spare definitely worth staying here to savour the colonial charm and see a stunning sunrise.

What a charming hotel - the location is great - on top of a cliff and the hotel is faded grandeur!! But what it lacks in paint and chic it more than makes up for in heart and spirit!!

The Closenburg has so much potential but what it is, is a kitsch hotchpotch from a bygone age - a colonial structure with colonial fixtures and fittings to match!!! We loved it for that alone, but that may not be to everyone's taste for sure.

The staff were very helpful and attentive and the menu looked great and was quite extensive - but there were some definite communication errors which were rectified.... and with a smile, but were a little frustrating at the time!!

The rooms are a good size and were clean and the view of the ocean was lovely. It was peaceful too.

WIth some paint and a little refurbishment this could be a really great hotel, I only hope that the charm does not disappear with too much modernisation. It would be a pity.

Situated in a very private location on a rock out crop above the sea , it is a wonderful location. A real Heritage building , maintained very well.

Reception are helpful and efficient, in fact all the staff go out of their way to be helpful and happy.

Rooms are very clean, old fashioned in a charming way, beds are comfortable , good linen. All rooms over look the bay and have an outside seating area.

Public areas really are Colonial, all antique furniture everywhere. Comfortable verhanda lounge, real dining room and the restaurant area in the fernery. A great holiday experience.

Food is fresh and well prepared. Maybe a little old fashion for some but you are staying in a Heritage Hotel.

real mixture of clientele, vistors from all over the globe and Sri Lankan's enjoying a peaceful stay. Seems pets are allowed to stay as well but check before you book.

Everything works, hot water all day. Bathrooms are basic and hotel amenities are missing but the towels are plentiful and luxourious.

Mini Bar in all the rooms.

Would certainly go back.

The good - Clean room, clean toilet, friendly service, lovely view with a private balcony, impeccable location, decent food.

This is a fairly good hotel to make your home if your going to be spending a lot of time walking or hiking around Galle. It's not top of the line, but if it's a nice place to lay your head in the night and a breathtaking view to wake up to, is what you are looking for then, it's definitely a good choice. The rooms are old, but clean and comfortable with clean linen.

The bad - limited service - the phone is answered about 50% of the time, the staff can be a little bit more professional and the food is limited (though whats available was of good quality). Old building which is sometimes in want of a coat of paint, old furniture which wasn't that great on the eyes as you entered the hotel and a few stains on the bathtub. The restaurant area could use a redesign, the coral on coral with a coral background is a little hard on the eyes...

Really enjoyed my stay at Closenberg Hotel. The rooms were immaculate with most offering sea views, the colonial architecture was unique and the food delicious. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful, willing to go the extra mile to ensure I made the most out of my time in Galle. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or recommend to a friend.

We were initially disappointed not to be staying in the centre of Galle however the hotel facilities more than made up for it. The rooms all had views over a nice beach with views of a stupa arising out of the jungle in the distance. The air conditioning worked well and the bathrooms worked well. The public spaces were atmospheric and conducive to lingering. We had one of our best meals in Sri Lanka thanks to Chef Shanil who created a prawn biriyani and assorted small curries that were simply delicious. He even went as far as to obtain hopper pans so we could recreate these Sri Lankan delicacies at home.

To get to the historical core of Galle, a short tuk tuk ride is all it takes.

Room Tip: Stay in the modern part.
