We chose this hotel so that we could combine a relaxing time at the end of a busy holiday in Sri Lanka with celebrating our silver wedding anniversary. Its location on the western side of Galle is just a short tuk-tuk ride away from Galle Fort and the centre of Galle. When you arrive, do not be put off by the less than impressive entrance. Once you step inside the sculpture on the stairs to the rooms, restaurants and bars makes it clear that this is not a run of the mill hotel.
We stayed for 5 nights at the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The rooms were large and airy. We did have trouble with the airconditioning in one of the two rooms that we occupied but combined with the ceiling fan this was not really a problem and the hotel tried hard to fix it. There was a bath and a walk in shower. We understood from the hotel manager that the hotel intends to refurbish the rooms and bathrooms although we did not see any pressing need for this to be done. The beds were extremely comfortable.
The hotel has two restaurants. One is used for breakfast and other meals while the other is fine dining. For our wedding anniversary we ate in the fine dining restaurant which was lovely. We were one of only two couples in the restaurant on that evening so it felt very exclusive. The food was excellent and not as expensive as I might have expected. The only downside was that the champagne we ordered was not available so we resorted to a perfectly acceptable bottle of French sparkling wine. The hotel provided us with a cake. Otherwise we ate lunch in the poolside bar which was good and not very expensive (by UK standards). We ate dinner prominately in the restaurant which was a buffet on three of the four nights we ate in the hotel. The buffets have a regional theme and were very good. My teenage sons especially enjoyed Indian night.
My only gripe with this hotel was that when we arrived in Sri Lanka about 2 weeks before we were due to stay in this hotel, our tour operator contacted us to advise that the hotel had overbooked and was asking whether we would move to a different hotel for our last 2 nights. As we had moved around a lot during our stay, we decided not to do this and advised our tour operator at that time. On the day of our wedding anniversary, one of the hotel staff approached me while I was at the pool and told me that we were having dinner in the fine dining restaurant (which my husband had arranged as a surprise) and that the hotel was organising a cake (which took that surprise away as well) and then asked me again if we would move. Once again I reiterated that we did not want to do this. It subsequently transpired that there was a major maritime conference in the hotel (which neither our tour operator or the hotel had mentioned) and the hotel was rather pushed to give the level of service it had otherwise given to the conference and the other guests. Added to this, it also had weddings to deal with. Had I known that all of these event had been going on, I might have chosen a different hotel. At breakfast on our last morning (which was the first morning of the conference) breakfast was served in the fine dining restaurant and the choices of food were more limited. There were significantly fewer staff who struggled to clear tables etc. My advice is to find out if there are major events at this hotel as were were told by the assistant managed that the hotel wanted to do more of this sort of thing.
I had a pedicure and a facial at the spa. Both were perfectly acceptable but probably not quite to the standard that I would expect in the UK. The spa itself is very nice and relatively new as we understand that it was completely destroyed in the tsunami. There are two very nice swimming pools with attentive staff providing loungers and towels. The larger pool near the spa had the best temperature of any pool on our trip and both were kept very clean. You can't swim in the sea as it is too rough but you can walk along the shore for a short distance.
