“Hotel with serious style and great Indian Ocean views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

We were upgraded to the Chinese suite on arrival which was amazing......and really huge, with 2 large balconies and a spa bath!

Dinner is excellent with lots of choice.......the outside BBQ with lots of kebab choices is especially good.

Service is impeccable too......all in all a true 5* hotel!

Room Tip: Room 303 - incredible suite!

The Lighthouse is always worth a visit and was so again this time. The rooms are wonderfully furnished and spacious. The staff are super friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed, makes you feel like family. F&B is fantastic and the service attitude is one of the best you will find in Sri Lanka. The location itself with the outstanding architecure is sensational. Long sandy beaches to both sides of the hotel invite for long walks along the sea. No swimming though with impending monsoon. But the two pools make more than up for the fact. The newly built SPA Wing is going to be fantastic.

If you plan to go South during your trip, do make sure to stop at the Lighthouse. To Robert and bis team - you are the best!

Let me just start this review by saying that maybe I have quite high standards and notice the small details.

This was our first holiday with our baby son and we booked this hotel as the website said it was an hours drive from Colombo on the new highway. NOWHERE on the website did it say that the highway was not open yet!! This meant that after our flight we had a 3.5 hour drive from the airport to the hotel the phrase "are we nearly there yet" comes to mind. After 2 hours on the road we asked our driver this only to be told it was going to be another 1.5 hours! Unfortunately the highway opened the day after we left so we had another 3.5 hours trip back at the end of our vacation but at least this time we were prepared.

We booked the airport transfer through the hotel. Being a top rated hotel, costing $170 and after informing the hotel we were bringing a baby and would have a reasonable amount of luggage (I.e. 2 suitcases, stroller, baby seat) we expected a large vehicle. We got a Nissan Sunny. Needless to say the trip was very cosy. Luckily we had a fantastic driver.

The entrance hall to the hotel is very impressive with a beautiful sculpture ascending the winding staircase. As we had the stroller we took the lift to the first floor where reception is located. Here is my first on small details, being one of the first things we saw at the hotel the lift could be maintained better with it's chipped paint and old faded carpet. Not what you expect of a rated hotel.

Check-in was smooth, we were provided with juice and hot towels while we waited and our luggage was delivered to the room.

The room was lovely and spacious and beautifully decorated and the beds are very very comfortable albeit quite high off the ground. We were staying for 9 nights and the lack of drawers that would open meant we shoved everything into the blanket box at the end of the bed to iron later. We especially liked the French blinds which made the room pitch black even in strong sunlight. Great for helping the baby sleep!

The view from the balcony was spectacular! Large waves crashing over rocks metres from the hotel with palm trees and vegetation in the foreground which made for amazing sunsets!

The food at the hotel was very good with a nice mix of local and international dishes on the ala carte menu. The buffet nights were very good but a bit pricey depending on how much you eat. For us we had a couple and then ordered off the ala carte menu instead. There were quite a few "Set menu" nights and no specials which meant after a few nights the food offering seemed a bit limited if you didn't want 3 courses.

The Sri Lanka night buffet was spectacular with traditional dancing and fire eating.

The service was rather inconsistent with some staff confiding that they were short staffed and that the kitchen service was slow which certainly seemed the case at times. At one point we had to ask the girl opening the restaurant door for patrons for coffee as we hadn't seen a waiter for some time. Having said this we did eat outside every time and there certainly seemed to be more staff inside. Luckily we had one waiter who was very good and tried to keep to him. As well as the slow service we also experienced wrong orders and mis-billing so keep an eye.

The view from the verandah restaurant was similar to the room with waves crashing over rocks onto the beach and was stunning at sunset with a few cocktails.

All staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful especially when it came to anything we needed for the baby. There aren't really any facilities for babies and not even a changing table in the toilets so be prepared to change on any available surface. I did mention this to the manager who was very nice and said he would look into getting one.

We were also invited to a cocktail hour by the manager with canapes which was a nice opportunity. We were also able to see photos of the damage caused to the hotel by the tsunami.

The French restaurant is also used for functions and if this includes music it can be heard clearly on the verandah which can spoil the ambience of the evening and location.

Overall a very good hotel which could just try a bit harder on it's F&B.

Room Tip: We had room 206 which directly looks over the sea. It was beautiful.

Dear Guest,

I am pleased you were able to enjoy your stay at Jetwing Lighthouse; it was our pleasure to have you with us.

I am extremely happy you took the time to write such a detailed review on Trip Advisor. Guest feedback is considered extremely important as it is them we all work hard to satisfy.

I will look in to your concerns about the service speeds, but honestly it did surprise me a bit as the service in the restaurant is not something we get complains about but regardless of that fact we are constantly looking to ways to improve ourselves, so your feedback will help us with it.I have looked in to purchase a changing table and we are currently try to source it .thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you for your review once again, and I do hope to see you back at Jetwing Lighthouse in the near future.

Geoffrey Bawa at his contemporary best. The hotel was only built in 1997, but the design and attention to detail of the design gives it the air of one of Asia's grand hotels. I'm officially in love with this hotel. The use of the natural contours of the land, the wonderfully framed views of the sea, the natural sea breeze through the buildings and, the classic Bawa colour palette of black, white, polished cement, natural wood, greene vegetation and - what is that, burnt umber? - all wonderful.

Beyond the architecture, interior design and gardens, everything from the staff, the rooms, the food, the beds, the stunning views and the art is top notch. Jetwing should be congratulated.

Another superbly designed property by the celebrated Geoffrey Bawa with spectacular ocean vistas from every room. The rooms are spacious, charmingly decorated and meticulously kept. The location although secluded is within walking distance of Galle Fort. The combination of these attributes with the friendly, cheerful and efficient staff makes for a truly memorable experience including candlelit dinners on the Cinnamon Terrace: beautiful whole fish caught that day, lobsters in season etc.

Room Tip: Give a thought to dividing your stay between the Lighthouse and one of two secluded jungle villas co...

We stayed at the Jetwing Lighthouse for 2 days in October 2013. The entrance was quirky but then once at the lobby, the views of the Indian Ocean were spectacular. The check in was smooth and the refreshing King Coconut water and juices served on arrival were delightful. The rooms were large with a huge comfortable bed but it was quite high so need to be careful with kids. The balcony opened up to gorgeous views of the sea and the two swimming pools which form part of the property. The bathrooms were nice with a shower cubicle and a tub.

Both pools are nice especially the one near the beach which is very large though not suitable for small children since it is 5-9 feet deep. The breakfast spread was lavish, delicious and I would recommend the hoppers which are freshly made by the polite lady. The staff was helpful.

I have only good things to say about the property which is very close to the Colonial area of Galle. I would certainly go back to the Jetwing Lighthouse if I get the opportunity.
