“3 Night Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

We arrived to a very welcome drink and cool towels, the service was great without being overbearing, It's only a short tuk tuk ride to town & the fort. Really nice swimming pool, we watched a troop of monkeys jump from tree to tree from the pool. The food is outstanding. The hotel supplied us with an adaptor as we had forgotten to bring one, and the rooms were very nice and airy (with air con).
Rayan, Chameera, Rohan and the pool attendant were really nice guys to chat to and help as was the young lady in the office helping with our change.
We stayed in the last week of April - it was just what we needed to chill out before going exploring.

Take care all, Nayan & Julie

Although slightly off the main road to Galle, this is actually an advantage for a peaceful stay as the main beach road can get very busy and the locals driving leaves a lot to be desired! The staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are so comfortable and clean, set in a quadrangle attached to this dutch lodge. Leading from there is some steps down to an endless pool and then a small path to a river where we hired a canoe for a small trip further into the jungle. An absolute hidden gem and is highly recommended for a stay on this wonderful isle.

Room Tip: All rooms are elegantly presented.

We stayed last week in April 2013 for 6 nights and were immediately satisfied when we arrived that we had made the right choice which stayed with us until we left, we had the place more or less to ourselves as it was end of season which suited us down to the ground. Wonderful old colonial building which has been tastefully enlarged and although it has all the modern amenities has kept the furnishings in the colonial style. Setting is peaceful and relaxing with lovely grounds and pool. Room was large and comfortable although bathroom only had a fan which meant frequent temperature changes passing between rooms.Food was generally very good and if ordered before going to the restaurant was always ready when you arrived, Sri Lankan meal arranged for us on one night in the garden was easily the best meal in the whole holiday. The staff were all very friendly and capable with particular thanks to the manager Sudath and Rayan
who made us welcome and special thanks to Rohan who always went out of his way to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. Galle is only 10 mins away by tuc-tuc for sight seeing and different meals. All in all we had a great time here and it was the icing on the cake after a previous week of touring and we can certainly recommend this hotel as a relaxing place.

I spent two weeks in this hotel with a group of artists - it was a perfect location for such a holiday. Attractive, relaxing and tranquil with very comfortable rooms (try the delightfully colonial Captain's Suite) and a beautiful swimming pool in the hotel and only a short distance to the fort and the hustle and bustle of Galle Town. The staff looked after us with impeccable efficiency, courtesy and friendliness, nothing was too much trouble, everything was possible and the imagination and effort that went into the meals and the dinner venues and hotel décor was endlessly surprising and enjoyable.
Mr. Ajith and Mr. Sudath manage and run this hotel, both of them most wonderful hosts, we felt like we were almost staying in a private home. And Mr. Jagath Ananda the chef, produced a spectacular variety of different cuisines and even gave us a cooking demonstration, since we were there for two weeks. Rohan, Rayan and all the other charming members of staff made it a truly relaxing and memorable two weeks. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: There is the vastly huge Admiral's Suite which shares a balcony with the Captain's Suite(Als...

We stayed at Tamarind Hill in early April 2013 with our three young kids. On arrival we were brought to the Captain's Suite which is spectacular with plenty of space even for our family of five and dignified yet comfortable colonial era decor. The common areas are highly attractive with rooms arranged around an elegant courtyard. The pool gives directly onto jungle and birds, bats and monkeys are constant companions.

All staff were hugely accommodating of our kids, being attentive and helpful yet ready to leave us space when we wanted it. The food was generally very good with plenty of safe options for kids yet some more interesting possibilities for adults.

In my view the location is ideal for Galle being close enough to get to the fort area quickly yet removed such that there is a lovely sense of seclusion.

Negatives were all very minor:
- there is a dump nearby and it is just about visible from the Captain's Suite though I suspect those in other rooms remain unaware of it. While there is no smell or other negative effect it is still a little jarring given the idyllic nature of the property itself.
- we had a transfer arranged by the hotel to our next hotel in Tangalle. The van when it arrived was clearly fairly rickety. Sure enough it ground to a halt near Merissa and we had to wait about 45 minutes while another arrived. To the credit of the hotel they arranged a good replacement and waived the transfer fee without even our asking.

All in all this is a fantastic base for exploring Galle and the surrounding area. It is a classy boutique property that is perfectly relaxed with kids.

Our stay at Tamarind Hill Galle took us back to the days when we lived at Thistle Court, the Samuleson Amarasiri Gunawardana family home. The original manor house built by our great grandfather retains its grandeur while the boutique hotel blends in the past with the luxuries of the present. What is unique is the fact that the original architecture has been meticulously conserved. Anyone who walks in through the doors falls in the love with the tranquility of the place. The peace and quiet and complete relaxation is a luxury itself. For us, the Gunawardana family, it brings back the memories of past. Thistle Court Galle will continue to remain a part of our heritage.

We thank the staff of Tamarind Hill, Gihan,Rayan,Rohan,Vinanga and the great chef Ananda for their caring service and the managers Mr. Ajith & Mr. Sudath for making us feel at home.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful spacious and excellent.

I'll begin by saying that this is still our favourite place in Sri Lanka and we recommend it to anyone who has the means to experience the sumptuous historical glory of Sri Lanka's past reconverted to a high-level boutique experience.

Designed by Sri Lanka's eminent interior designer Tharu, Tamarind Hill has been brought back to the glory of old in keeping with its heritage and now affording customers an insight into how the Sinhalese high-life once lived in Sri Lanka during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The staff are the best trained on the island, diligently supervised by Sudath, the manager and Ajit, the General Manager to whom we send our compliments and thanks.

The infinity pool on the premises is in a perfect location are the rooms the surround a central garden. Guests can choose where to eat their meals and are taken care of indulgently. Most staff speak very good English and converse freely with the guests as part of their daily duties.

Cuisine is good - especially the Sri Lankan breakfast which I defy any couple to finish!
With good wifi now installed, Tamarind Hill is also the perfect place to work a bit while relaxing. We went to Unawatuna by Tuk-tuk each day for our sea swim but decided to stay in Tamarind on the last day an enjoy being spoiled.

For any honeymooner, this is the place and for the discerning traveller, fed up of large-scale tourism with massive crowds queueing for a buffet, the discrete silence of dinner at Tamarind Hill will be a welcome change.

Actually, prices are not that expensive compared to the massive complexes that the Amaya, Cinnamon or Jetwing chains provide. Go boutique in Sri Lanka.
It's the only way to feel the appeal of an Island that has regained its direction and cultural diversity.

My thanks to the staff of Tamarind Hill - see you again soon!

Room Tip: Any of the rooms are good. We stayed in rooms 6 and 7 on different occasions which were both excelle...
