“WONDERFUL!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

I stayed here for a whole MONTH as a medical student. It truly has been an amazing experience. It is incredibly intimate (only 6 rooms) and a HUGE garden with exotic foliage. The pool is big enough to do laps in with nice privacy. The rooms were exceptionally clean and roomy! The staff is what truly made the stay, though. They all live on the premises so you can always get whatever you need. It is like a family experience. Jayantha is a professionally-trained chef, and everything he makes (from CURRY to lasagna) is DELICIOUS! Danesh will get you anything you need and always greets you with a smiling face and delightful conversation. Sudath ensures your room is exactly as it needs to be, and will take you wherever you need to go in the resort's tuktuk. Dilini is in charge of the bookkeeping, and even taught us some Sinhalese phrases! I ALWAYS felt SAFE at Leijay too, as they have a full time night watchman.

Bottom line- once in a lifetime intimate, gorgeous, stay. You will be treated like a KING at Leijay, and I can't say enough wonderful things about it.

We've stayed 4 nights at the time when Nilam cyclone was destroying holidays of all other people who came to this part of the world to enjoy their vacation. We didn't mind pouring rain or the fact that we didn't see one single ray of sunshine - it was perfect!
Excellent staff, good food, well sized pool and of course: Duchesse (our favorite!), Mamma, Balou and Cherry! We just can't wait to come back!

Leijay Resort is an excellent rosort with wonderful staff and quiet location at very reasonable price. there are only 6 rooms with huge garden and clean swimming pool, I was enjoying every second and feel so relax. I wish I could have stayed longer!
Anyway, you MUST stay here!

We stayed at Leijay for 7 nights during our recent trip to Sri Lanka, out of the 6 hotels we stayed in Leijay was by far the best. What made it so special was the fantastic team that work there, everyone played their part in making our stay comfortable and relaxing. Jayantha is the most amazing cook, his rice and curry is to die for the best we ate in Sri Lanka. Dinesh could not do enough for us, he always had a friendly smile and was always willing to take us to where we needed to be in the Leijay tuk tuk, his driving was very safe. The team is headed up by Yvonne the owner, she was available to give any advice needed and to ensure that the place was running smoothly, it was lovely spending time talking to her.The laundry service was excellent and good value.

The grounds and the pool were immaculate and peaceful. Our room was a really good size, the bed very comfortable and the air conditioning very welcome. The rooms have everything you need but to be honest most of the time was spent sitting on the very comfortable veranda or in the garden by the pool.

Absolutely nothing was too much trouble, including scaling a tree to pick coconuts for us to try the coconut milk.

Leijay is hard to find but to be honest you dont need to know where it is with the excellent service offered by the tuk and Dinesh. It is only a very interesting10 min ride into Galle.

Don't miss out on the chance of a massage at Leijay, it is amazing and very cheap - a real treat.

When we left Leijay everyone came to say goodbye to us, I have to confess to shedding a tear. We went onto stay at the 5* Jetwing Lighthouse, whilst it was a beautiful hotel in a fab location given the choice I would choose Leijay.

Thank you Yvonne and the team, we will be back.

Some things we found helpful......

If you need to be in contact with home buy a Sri Lankan sim card - calls and texts are so cheap . I paid £10 for sim card and several calls to home.

Read lots before you go, trip advisor gives good advice.

The rough guide is quite accurate.

It takes a long time to get anywhere, even a trip of a few km can take ages - allow lots of time.

Places to visit around Galle....

Jungle beach and the peace pagoda.

Galle Fort - watching the sunset from thre is amazing

Unawatuna beach

Turtle hatchery.

Meal at the Fortress.

What a great place to relax. Highly recommend this place to those who don't care about being right among everything in the Fort. We still went into the Fort numerous times using the Leijay tuk-tuk, which was both reasonably priced and safely driven by the excellent Dinesh (this guy is great - super helpful but unassuming and discreet). Dinesh also took us on a great little tour of the region one day (turtle hatchery, jungle beach, peace pagoda, unawatuna) for an absolute bargain price.

The gardens are beautiful (lots of birdlife, squirrels and monkeys in the surrounding trees), the pool clean and refreshing, the staff just wonderful. In fact, it is the staff that make this place worthwhile. We also had the best rice and curry of the trip here (provided you insist that they make it spicy though - too many times in Sri Lanka we had bland curries because people simply didn't believe that tourists could handle any chilli or spices!).

The only area where I disagree with some of the other reviews is the standard of the rooms. They were certainly clean (which is the most important thing), but they are quite dark and cluttered up with strange bric-a-brac (e.g. our room had some weird trophies in it - I'm not quite sure why). While the rooms were sufficient, by Sri Lankan standards this place is not in the 'budget' category so I think they could be a bit nicer. The dim lighting meant we wouldn't really have wanted to spend heaps of time in the room, but luckily everything about the place was so wonderful that we didn't really mind.

Room Tip: A couple of the rooms open directly onto the common dining areas. This is not a noisy property but i...

We stayed here for four nights in September 2012. The resort is situated about 10 mins in a tuk tuk outside the main town of Galle which was perfect - the resort provide their own tuk tuk and are very helpful about directing people to find them. Leijay is pure tranquility, the staff are fantastic and Yvonne (the owner) is friendly and takes time to talk with you and offer advice. Jayantha, Dinesh, Sudath, Piyushan, Surash, Malani, Diline all made our stay a rememberal experience.

The food was excellent, the room was big and had everything you needed. The pool was fantastic and definately a bonus. If we stay in Galle again we will make Leijay the first port of call. Oh and we also probably had the best massage in Sri Lanka at Leijay.

We stayed here for 5 nights and loved it! Our room was very clean (as was the whole resort) and spacious. The food (we ate evening meals there as well as the included breakfast) was really good and being able to eat on the spacious verandah overlooking the lovely garden was great. The menu choices catered for a range of tastes but we enjoyed the Sri Lankan curries and also the Sri Lankan breakfast. Above all, the service, from all the staff, was superb; very friendly and relaxed but everything you asked for was provided quickly and efficeintly without any fuss. Leijay is a little way out of Galle but is in a very peaceful setting. The resort has its own TukTuk to take people into Galle and collect them and if that is not available they will arrange one for you. so being out of Galle is not a problem.
The swimming pool is a good size and very clean; great to cool off in!
Overall, this is an excellent place to stay and we would thoroughly recommend it.
