“Superb Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We wrapped up 16 days travelling in Sri Lanka with a delightful stay here. The rooms, grounds and communal areas are all beautifully presented - the level of care and pride in the resort in evident throughout. Our room, a Coconut Suite, was very tastefully decorated and had all you could possibly need and more. The outdoor bathroom was particularly lovely.

Whilst I'm sure there is plenty to see in the surrounding area, but after a full on fortnight's travelling we crashed by the beautiful pool and lapped up the sun and surroundings. The service throughout was brilliant, friendly but unobtrusive, of a level of a very high end hotel. Jerome & Tony, the two members of staff that looked after us throughout were polite, gregarious and lovely to be around - true assets to the hotel. Furthermore, the Chef is a superstar. The food here was incredible, we had delicious curries, rotties and fish dishes throughout our stay. All lovingly made, beautifully presented and lip smackingly tasty! Breakfast was hearty and a great start to the stay, and the tea table that is presented at about 5pm is a civilised delight.

All in all, the perfect end to our trip. Great value for money and a truly lovely place to kick back and enjoy some of the best hospitality Sri Lanka has to offer.

Lovely place, tastefully decorated, delightful staff and DELICIOUS food. However, the service level is decidedly three-star: no shampoo in the bathroom, no toilet paper holder, old stained towels on massage tables, facilities rough around the edges. Additionally, we sent out laundry and it came back smelling worse than it left -- probably hand-washed in old water. All of this is absolutely fine and lovely for a simple tropical hotel, but with room and board costing $250+ per night we expected much more.

Again, given the service level they seem to aspire to, it's a lovely place. But the price is simply too high for what's on offer.

After a busy schedule sightseeing with a driver over 17 days we arrived at Nisala Arana late at night from Kandy. As soon as we drove in I relaxed, it was as magical a setting as the marketing suggests and a welcome retreat from the constant noise of car horns. We were alone with just 2 cranes for company for 3 days, I can't imagine why as this safe haven of peace is simply beautiful and so well designed. The rooms are comfortable with views to die for, our room was air conditioned and that was important. The friendly long standing staff are discreet but always available to advise or make you a snack. The beach is less than 10 mins away in the hotel's Tuk Tuk but the garden is so beautiful and alive with wildlife that we found it hard to gather energy to leave, preferring to enjoy the solitude and some of the best home cooking we experienced in country. This location is hard to beat if you enjoy good personal service without any pomp, it has plenty of space to find a private spot away from other people. You will enjoy feeling at home as opposed to being in a hotel. Do take your mosquito repellent as despite the teams brilliant efforts with coils and lanterns the pesky beasts will find their way in! The drinks and wine list here was limited but the most reasonable. If you like your beer or wine very cold warn the team as they bring in ice without a murmur to ensure satisfaction..

Room Tip: The Mango Suite rooms are on the second floor above a garage, just a minutes walk from the main pavi...

We had a great few days staying at this lovely complex in Sri Lanka. The owners were very helpful in advising us where to visit and the staff were very accommodating as we had an 18 month old child with us. There was always someone in the kitchen to make drinks or food and as we were there in the quiet season we had the place to ourselves and felt like millionaires - a once in a lifetime experience!

We only overnighted here but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The garden was beautiful and the pool appreciated! Dinner was superb, the yoghurt cake devine. Staff and owner friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the privacy, feeling that we were the only guests and pampered accordingly. Thank you for a wonderful stay and all the best for the future.
Kindest regards, karen and martin anan

We had fabulous stay at this unique and out of this world spot in Sri Lanka. Warm welcome and amazing food in accommodation of the highest standards. Set in beautiful grounds and amazing architecture, the Periera family have done everything to make this place special. Local trip is a must with their trusted family friend. We ended our honeymoon here and it was the perfect choice. We loved especially the outdoor bathroom! We relive the experiences there and would love to return some day...don't miss it on your trip!!

Arriving at Nisala Arana in Bentota was like entering a tropical paradise. The first thing’s that hits you is the beauty of the tropical gardens. Hidden behind stone-walls it is like stumbling upon the most exotic secret garden.

We were greeted by the charming Harry and Tony charming locals (despite the anglicised names) who were always armed with a ready smile and the attitude that nothing that you required was too much trouble.

The suite that we stayed in was the Coconut wing. The room was styled in grand colonial fashion with a huge four poster draped in white and covered with crisp white linen. The furniture had an effortless charm and was beautiful as well as practical. I even found myself one over by the Nespresso machine having never tried one before.
The bathroom was a revelation. Semi outdoors so that you were showering outside whilst keeping your modesty intact thanks so a high wall for maximum privacy. There is nothing quite like being in the open air whilst doing your morning ablutions.
A mini box of my favourite Lindt chocolates on the pillows was the ultimate icing on the cake.

Having visited the west coast in low season we had the incredible fortune to be the only guests staying which made it feel like we were on our own private island (Richard Branson eat your heart out!). It also meant that we had a couple of days of unpredictable weather. The monsoon rain was hugely dramatic creating massive lake like puddles that would be dry by the following morning. This didn’t in any way hamper our enjoyment of the stay. We swam in the gorgeous fresh water pool whilst the rain fell and then dried off on the pavilion where we read, played music and simply watched the drama of the weather unfold.

Every day we were treated to afternoon tea of cake or biscuits that was a perfect accent to the afternoon. The food was incredible. Breakfast would be a long drawn out affair involving fresh juice, fruit platter, omelet or a full Sri Lankan curry, which was my husbands choice. Lunch would be a sandwich or my favourite crispy prawns when we could manage it after our hearty breakfasts. Dinner was the absolute highlight with the chef never failing to wow us and avoiding a repetitive menu. We had calamari, whole fish, curries and sublime soups that tasted as good as any veloute that I’ve tasted in France. Every evening we had three courses and the desserts were to die for including chocolate delight, pancakes and home made sorbets. We felt like absolute stars being the only guests in the beautiful open sided pavilion with Harry and Charlie looking after our every whim.

I would like to be able to tell you more about Bentota and the surrounding area but to be honest we found Nisala Arana such a haven that it was hard to prise ourselves away to do any sightseeing! And as we were on holiday we didn’t feel any guilt about idling away the hours swimming, sunbathing, eating, drinking and generally indulging ourselves. In our own private paradise.
