“Much better than our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2009

I didn't take into consideration the distance from airport to the hotel but it was definitely worth it even with an 11 year old and a 5 year old in tow. The hotel is lovely and much better than we expected. The rooms are great and very clean (I think they clean the rooms about 3 times a day). The food is really good too. There is a lot of choice - something for every taste. But it is definitely the staff that make the hotel. They will go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome. I would recommend this hotel to anyone whatever type of holiday you are looking for. The beach is gorgeous and about a 1 minute walk from the pool. Sri lanka is a beautiful island and this hotel is the perfect base to explore it from. My family and I would recommend visits to the elephant orphanage, the turtle hatcheries and the mask museum is also worth a visit. Hikkaduwa is also a nice place to visit and a river boat cruise is a must.

We had a lot of reservations about travelling to Sri Lanka & the state of the hotels but we were pleasantly suprised.The transfer is long & a bit scary with the traffic.Bentota beach hotel is in slight need of an upgrade in certain areas but had friendly staff,wonderfull food with plenty variety,a great pool,beutifull beach,a good size bed & bedroom with clean towels everyday,flowers on the bed,slightly dusty in the corners & behind the tv! Problems were sorted straight away.The pool side bar was slow & needs a bit of work.loved the residant elephant,Zeta,we fed her everyday & she was very well behaved at our daughters wedding & gave them a ride onto the beach which they will chersh.The wedding was brilliant & stress free.We had a 1 night, 2 day tour with a great guy off the beach right outside the gate,he was far cheaper than the rep' & made the tour to our needs.We visited the elephant orphanage,sigaria,kandy ect,the vehicle was good,hotel good & he stayed with us thro'out the tour giving good infomation & even supplied the booze in the evening.( [--]) just take into account you are in a poorer country & it is very differant (go with an open mind!)We enjoyed it.

Very dated. Although probably clean - it didn't seem it. Everything was extremely dated.

Having felt very let down by Browns Beach (negombo) we changed hotels to here and didnt feel let down! Great place, good food, lovely room and good service too! Pool was really nice (first pool I've seen with rock formation in it!!) and also the hotel had it's own elephant!!??

The only things that let it down were ants in the room, the busy road than ran nearby and the waiters were sometimes really slow with drinks.

Enjoy!

Arrived 21 June 2009
Length of stay 22 nights
Room allocated 105

Report ;
On arrival through iron gates, opened by a security guard is a little unexpected but not intimidating, climbing the stairs the reception is impressive with the printed silk’s on the ceiling and the mahogany floor, we had a warm welcome by the staff and where presented with a cold towel and colder drink which we gladly accepted after the three hour journey from the air port
The luggage arrived at the room via an alternative route and was delivered by a smiling porter,
We where shown the room which was not over large but adequate with a good sized balcony, fantastic view and king size bed the TV worked and the mini bar was full (more latter)
After 22 nights you really do get to know a place and the Bentota Beach has the following pros and cons .
Pros;
The room, Bed, view, food, grounds, location. The pool , service , staff , Pontoon lobster night £45 for two, wild life , the hotel elephant , Security, atmosphere . All the essential things work .
Cons ;
The food could be warmer, the chairs in the bar are uncomfortable, the tired bathroom, restaurant can be cramped. The restraint chairs will remove the skin from the backs of legs if sat on in shorts, the sand flies by the pool bitten in the day. The hotel is overdue for a refurbishment.
In summery
Apart from the dam sand fly’s all the Cons are trivial annoyances the way to use the mini bar if you on AI is to empty it and refill with bottles of water to your taste. We had a great time and will return next year for me it’s not the building that makes a Holiday it’s the whole thing . And despite the slightly worn round the edges we loved it. Oh and a special hello to Deb and Dave (real names withheld to protect the guilty)
Also to Sena who as a Guide, Driver ,trip organiser, was an absolute pleasure to be with

After booking this holiday last november, we decidied to check it out on here and thought we had made a big mistake ! The nearer the holiday as getting the more we were dreading it ! But glad we never cancelled ! I dont even think some of these people stayed in this hotel as it was nothing like i experienced !
Our room (411) was marvellous, over looking the river , beautiful. Cleaned twice a day, and clean towels twice a day, and very friendly staff! We never tipped till the end of the holiday as we were all inclusive but never found any nastiness to us as we werent tipping !
The nights seemed a bit quiet in the hotel, but we tended to sit outside with a group that we had met , and a good time was had by all of us !! Some really good laughs.
We went on a couple of the trips ( Galle ) (elephant orphanage, Kandy ) the latter being the high light of my holiday ! Very tiring trips but well worth going ! We went with a couple of the beach guys , and as 2 women travelling never at all felt intimidated in any way! Turned out to be really nice guys and we even went and ate at one of thier houses one evening !! (and no they didnt try to charge us !! ha ha )
Food in the hotel was ok, good choice but could just do to be a bit warmer !
All in all had a fantastic time, and didnt want to leave to fly on to Dubai for 2 nights ! ( which can i say isnt all its cracked up to be ! )
Well for all of you that read this and are going , may i just wish u a very happy holiday ! and i wish it was me that was going !!
