The place was right next to where we stayed and thus an easy option after a long travel to Bentota. I had read really good things about it, so it was an easy choice.
My companion received their main course very quickly, while my starter (coconut crusted fried calamari) took forever to arrive. Once it did, I think I knew what the delay was. They had trouble controlling the temperature of their frying oil, because even on a second attempt, my calamari was on slightly burnt side. The flavors we really good though, so it was a shame that it had become rubbery and the crust had hardened. But I was really hungry, and the spicy and tangy crust made me still finish off most off my plate.
My mains were a prawn curry with a what seemed like a kilo of rice. The curry was tiny compared to the carbs that they served it with -- needless to say, I barely got through a quarter of my rice before my curry and prawns were over. Again though, the flavors and spice levels were good.
I think this was systemic of most places in Bentota -- hit some notes, but misfire on just enough to take them over the top. Just compared to their peers in the city, Escoffier is a good option, though it would be just about average in other cities.
