“Lovely location right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

A small hotel right on the beach. Our room was clean but basic with great air conditioning. It was lovely to sit on the balcony and look out at the ocean. The bathroom had bath and shower, hot water but was a bit dated.

The hotel was in need of make over but the room and bed was comfortable enough. We had our rooms cleaned everyday on request.

Meals were served right by the beach. The breakfasts were large with fresh fruit, toast then eggs or a Sri Lankan breakfast. Fresh fruit juice was served with the fruit and tea or coffee at the end of breakfast.

The beach was fantastic and practically deserted. The waves were those that surfers would enjoy!

The pool was small and right next to the beach. The beach furniture was dated, but adequate.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

We stayed here for one night at the end of our stay in January 2012. As we were driving into the hotel my wife noticed the hotel signage advertised the place as a 'semi-luxury' resort. We joked about that and wondered what that meant.

Well, having stayed there I think it means that this place has lots of potential but is let down by a few key problems.

To start with the hotel is nicely designed. All of the spacious rooms face the sea so they all have a great view. The pool is nice and the beach outside is clean and beautiful. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a balcony facing the sea. But everything looks very tired and run down. The common areas are badly in need of decoration with damp patches and peeling paint aplenty. Outside our room there were stalagtites of plaster hanging from the ceiling! The bathroom in our room looked like it was installed in 1970 and hadn't been touched since. Everything is nice but a bit shabby - and it really wouldn't take a huge amount of time or money to fix it.

There is also no lift and all the rooms are on the first and second floors so this place is out for anybody who has limited mobility.

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpfull in most cases. Everywhere we went we were greeted with warm smiles. They also went out of their way to help us. We had a young baby who needed his sleep from about 6.30pm. We asked for dinner early but they couldn't accomodate. However they were happy to serve dinner upstairs on our balcony so we could watch him which was a nice touch. But not all the staff were all that compentent - the facilities by the pool don't look like they've ever been cleaned and the toilets in the restaurant are only slightly better. When we checked out we needed to leave our bags in left luggage as our flight was late. The check in staff said that was fine and our bags would be moved to storage. We went out for a walk and when we came back after an hour our bags were sat unattended by the hotel front entrance. Nobody was at reception to keep an eye on them so anybody could have taken them.

The biggest problem with this resort however is the food. It's awful. We had half board as part of our rate - everything we ate was amongst the worst food we ate in Sri Lanka. It was all poor quality imitation Western food. After each meal I saw the staff tucking into nice looking Sri Lankan curries with rice and bread but all we were offered was rubbery chicken with cold vegetables in a strage brown sauce. Not good at all. The main problem was that the resort is fairly isolated - they have a pretty captive audience.

This should be a really good hotel but it is let down by some poor management decisions. If they cleaned the place up a bit, hired a new chef and trained some of the personel better this would be great place to stay. As it is it is only average.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty much the same.

If you are looking for a place to get away from the hectic world, sit everyday by the pool or beach and spend your night reading books/ walking around the beach/watching movies on TV/or speaking to your spouse/friend, then this is the PERFECT place for you.

We spend 3 nights at this Boutique hotel during the end of January 2012. We were greeted by the staff with a cold juice and a fresh towel. We had the deluxe room which was very big, clean, everything was new, it had a bath (pretty rare in Sri Lanka), television and a mini fridge (wonderful to have cold water at any time).

The hotel has only 15 rooms, it is right on the beach, the sea is wonderful to get in (not for young children though), and another great bonus, there was not even one annoying peddler that bothered us on the beach.
The hotel also has free WIFI on the lobby floor, and a nice library where you can borrow books in different languages.

During breakfast, the hotel unfortunately does not have a buffet. After 10 days of having just Continental breakfasts in the different guesthouses, we wanted something else. The Chef was kind enough to come and talk to us and asked what would we like to eat.

The few minor negative things that I should mention is that the staff barley speak any English, and so you need to be very patient. Nevertheless, they are so sweet, that it is hard to get angry.
During our stay they had one day of renovations, and that was inappropriate to do for so many hours. As I mentioned before, you can take a tuk-tuk and go to other restaurants or a few shops in the other hotels, but other than that, there is nothing else to do or who to talk to (not necessarily a negative thing)

We got a GREAT and very cheep offer to the hotel thanks to our sweet and wonderful guide Waruna disala kandegama

Stayed here for 4 nights in mid January 2012.
Interesting colonial style hotel with huge open plan lobby/dining area with an atrium open to the skies. all teh rooms look out over the beach area. We had a 1st floor room which was fine for the price, a bit faded but perfectly OK with a/c unit. Strangely there was no hot water coming out of the taps when we arrived, once we reported it hot water started to flow a couple of hours later - so I suppose each room's water has to be turned on. A fridge in the room had been a minibar at one time, but no longer. The fridge worked but when we put some fruit in it we found it was frozen solid afew hours later.
Breakfast was the usual stanadrd we found everywhere. WE were on a h/b tarrif and therefore had an evening meal which was uninspired. Why do hotels like this offer a choice of two western style meals rather than a Sri Lankan curry and one western choice??
The pool was small but weel kept the beach was fantastic though, just a few small hotels on the long beach and and a result hardly anyone using the beach.
Given that this was the second cheapest hotel we stayed at on our S-L trip it more than met our expectations and I would certainly return.
I just think that small hotels like this (17 Bedrooms?) would really benefit from trying to understand what western tourists expect (check rooms carefully before assigning guests to ensure all the lights work, hot water works, the bathroom and other floors are really clean, offer better choices of meals, advertise your special friday lunch to all guests at breakfast, get more better loungers, make sure waiting staff are on hand fro drinks snacks etc on the beach/pool - you would sell more !)

Room Tip: Due to no lift firts floor is better than second floor

Beautiful beach and stunning colonial hotel with huge sweeping staircases!!! Absolutely filled with character! The rooms are quite basic but this is reflected in the room rate which is very reasonable for what you get. The pool is lovely for an afternoon dip and the staff are very attentive! By the way, best Sri lankan curry I have ever had!!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing so you can't go wrong!

We were there for 1 day on Dec 25th 2011. Location is fantastic. Room quality was good. We were in 2nd floor and in Room No 117(if I remember well). There was a slight leakage from ceiling but it was ok.
Food was disappointing and we had dinner outside in a very small hotel/restaurant.
One particular staff was very pushy to avail the Ayurvedic Treatment but I understand that it's business.

An Experience of a lifetime...Helpful staff and good food. Situated right on the beach the view is amazing. Room was clean but did not have hot water geysers. The beach is clean and better than Bentota
