“Romantic getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

Loved Temple Trees. This is a tiny hotel in Induruwa - so expect it to be slightly different from the big ones all around the Sri Lankan coast. The rooms were lovely and consisted of good furniture and appliances. All rooms come with a balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean. A huge plus point is the hot tub in the bathrooms. Blinds can be lifted and you can watch the beautiful sunset from the hot tub.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. No complaints about them whatsoever.

Yes - the complex adjacent was in the process of being built. However, this did not affect us as we had rooms in the middle of the hotel.

This hotel has 8 rooms, so as a result, a rather small car park inside the complex (we parked here). Also, there is a set menu with 2-3 options for the main course, not as much choice as a buffet. However, the quality of the food was exquisite - much better than most buffets. They also provided us with huge portions, which was a good sign. The pool is small, but perfect for a hotel of this size. The hotel is on the beach, so there is easy access.

I certainly would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the middle.

We stayed here for two nights. The staffs(esp receptionists) were very nice and friendly. They arranged a tuktuk for us and got a good driver who took us around induruwa and we also did some shopping. The beach is just so close and less touristy( that is what we wanted). I really recommend this hotel.

Dealbreakers

The adjoining property is a construction site. As in the adjoining wall to our room. The TT website now acknowledges the construction, but did not at the time of our booking, nor were we notified. Although the website states “HEAVY PILE DRIVING, FOUNDATION AND CONCRETE WORK” has now been completed, there was enough bashing, crashing and construction noise to wake us up each morning / dusty construction air which made it hard to attempt to relax or enjoy the beach or pool. There was enough noise from the staff shouting across the garden / beach / reception that should the builders take the day off it would still be noisy.

We had arranged an airport transfer through the hotel for US$70. The driver turned up with a friend so for the entire way they were yelling, coughing up phlegm, the friend snoring like an hippo for half hour and general assault on the ears. We explicitly asked him to take the express way but he came off way early and we ended up taking tiny roads, parping the horn, overtaking on blind corners in the middle of nowhere. Hub had to ask him to stop the car to be sick from the crazy driving and noise. When I asked at various point why we had come off the expressway we were told “the expressway was shut”, “the road from the expressway was too busy”, and “this way is quicker”. We finally realised when we stopped at a bus station that the driver was dropping his mate off along the way. Total scam and a horrible start to the holiday. The hotel staff spoke such little English that it was entirely fruitless to even attempt to explain the experience.

The hotel menu has one Sri Lankan item on it. Which is only available for lunch. The waiter waded straight in recommending the most expensive thing on the menu being lobster (this just made us both laugh) and was notably offended when we asked what the local Sri Lankan options were given we were in Sri Lanka. We did not eat here during our stay. We ended up walking 20 minutes up the beach to eat at Saman Villas where the food was absolutely delicious, and strangely priced lower than the TT menu despite a huge difference in the quality of service and surroundings.

We decided to eat out on New Year’s Eve (at Saman Villas again) to continue sampling the delicious Sri Lankan food. During the day, we were asked 5 increasingly confronting times (including 2 calls to our room whilst we were either trying to nap or take a bath) if we would be eating at TT that night, each to which we replied we were eating out. Finally, a member of staff came to our room (us getting out of the bath and being dressed in a towel), asked if he could come in to which Hub said “no” and took a step in the door to ask why we were not eating there in an aggressive manner. No surprise when we found out they had not ordered the tuk-tuk we had asked them to take us to dinner. Was I being held hostage?

Has potential but misses the mark:

Rooms were nice, with a huge circular bath (more than big enough for the two of us) from which you can see the waves break. However, the water pressure was so low, and tepid warm that after half an hour waiting for the bath to half fill it was cold. On my third attempt I instead filled the kettle 8 times to add into the tub. The staff could not understand our requests for extra soap / shampoo or beer from the room service menu. Hub went downstairs to speak to 2 more people to try to get beer (had to give up on soap / shampoo).

We were offered a free half hour massage each as part of our stay which was a nice touch. Unfortunately we only found out about this when we were rung to be informed that it was available right then but managed to put it off to the following day. I was asked to have a shower (whilst in my bikini) in the spa room but given no towel so was sat on a hard wooden stool dripping wet and cold whilst I was given a head and shoulder massage. Hub described this as being “head raped”. There was a dead crab in the spa plunge pool. However, the back massage (lying down) was very good, credit where due. When Hub had his massage, this was interrupted 2 times whilst the masseuse explained (loudly) the services offered to potential customers.

Staff training and service needs major investment. TT, YOU CANNOT SIMPLY PRICE AT TOP DOLLAR IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE QUALITY OR SERVICE TO MATCH. I have shouted this in capitals so that this is hopefully heard over the general noise at TT.

I won't waste any more effort into TT! We can only be thankful that our stay after TT was so beautifully relaxing it made up for these 3 days and from where we got to experience some amazing Sri Lankan cuisine and scenery in this beautiful country.

On the positive side, we really enjoyed the location and the beach at Temple Tree. Rooms and facilities are lovely, especially the beach. Some key basics were missed however which were very annoying. Hot water is run on a solar system (excellent!) but we were staying in high season, the hotel was full, the solar heated water ran out and the back up system did not engage. I had two cold showers in four days which I consider unacceptable when paying top dollar. My friend made a booking at the spa, they confirmed the time in person, and then when she arrived there was another guest having a treatment and they asked her to come later. My spa treatment was nice, but not as advertised. It was also very annoying to have flies in the spa treatment room, particularly when they are interested in the products which are generously applied on you! I understand this is a tropical environment and it is difficult to keep flies / bugs / critters away, but given the price tag, I expected a bit more of an effort. Overall, lovely spot but not worth the price tag.

I sent my wife on a all girl trip and was worried about her safety. This resort sets the standard on how to run a boutique resort.

At night My wife and another woman were out dining at a shack/restaurant by the beach next to the hotel. All the time there was a security guard from the resort stood a distance but kept an eye for their safety.

And this came handily when the owner of the shack tried to act aggressive and was forcing my wife and her friend to hang around and have a drink with him. The guard was always around un-intrusiveley making them feel safe.

They loved the room and the tub. Though they hated the pillows and mattress.

Else great place highly recommended.

Small ten room boutique hotel. Visited with a friend. Rooms are great modern wooden flooring with an open all glass bathroom which has a huge tub with a sea view. Seperate shower cubicle again with a distant sea view . Seperate toilet area. Though the bathroom being all gglass is slightly tough to use if the other person opens the door.
Food is good at the standalone restaurant wooden styling again. Huge benches .. again sea view . The beach is right infront . Pool is small though . The food at the restaurant needs to get their pricing right for veg food and also add veg options.
The lady at reception needs training. Shes not customer friendly.
the safe was not functioning and the door was not locking properly when we went and stayed like that for two nights with much help.the common toilet at lobby is mostly spoilt and has plumbing issues. The beds in the room need a makeover . very low and very uncomfortable too. The pillows were not of a resort standard..
spoilt
