“Excellent Hassle-free Choice to See Gyeongju Historic Sites”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Arriving in Gyoengju without much of a plan and wanting to see most of the sites, my wife and I decided to go with the Gyeongju City Tour option as they will pick you up directly from your hotel in the lake resort area and take you to the majority of the sites worth visiting. Although there pamphlet says they have 4 possible course choices, my wife and I found that they only had Course 1 available while we were there in late September, which seemed like it was the beginning of the off-season.

The day lasted from about 9:30 until 5 p.m. (which is a little shorter than the schedule showed since the museum is closed on Monday - the day we went). The price of the bus tour is currently $15 per person (15,000 Won) + the entrance fees to the sites (which the guide collects up front and takes care of upon arrival at the sites) + lunch which was $9 per person. All tolled, the day for my wife and I was $73 I believe. This was well worth it for us as it saved the hassle of trying to find each of the sites and arranging transport to each of them.

The bus has a brief video before each stop, and it is played in English as well as Korean. Some of the sites were not all that interesting, but overall, Course 1 had a fine cross-section of good sites. The people were pleasant and even though they didn't speak English, they were always very clear when we had to meet back at the bus. That was also one positive aspect of this tour - they take you to the site and get you in and you can either choose to walk around with their guide or split off on your own and explore and they will tell you what time to be back at the bus.

The only thing that puts this below an overall 5 star rating for me is the lunch was not great. We have been traveling in Korea for about 2 weeks and this lunch, although not really bad, was one of the least enjoyable meals we had.

Overall, I would recommend this tour for anyone looking to see Gyeongju without having to worry about the hassle of making it to all the sites by themselves.

“Saved us the hassle. Good day out.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

We wanted to visit the Underwater Tomb of King Munmu, Gameunsa Temple Site and Golgulsa Temple whilst we were in Gyeongju but were hesitant using public buses as it looked like the services were not too frequent and they didn't necessarily stop at a place that was obvious to get to these sites. We imagined that a lot of time could be lost due to a combination of waiting for the buses to arrive and having to work out how to get to the sites once we got off the bus. We were also hesitant using taxis due to cost. As a result, we thought about abandoning any ideas to visit these places and do something else instead. We were therefore really pleased to find that Gyeongju City Tours offered a day tour that covered all the places that we wanted to go to plus more. We re-arranged our plans go to Seokguram Grotto as this was part of the tour and Gwaereung Royal Tomb (a place that wasn't on our itinerary) was also included.

We booked the tour at the tourist information centre just outside of Bulguksa Temple by asking the staff to phone the reservation number on our behalf and our places were booked for the following day.

There are several pickup points and conveniently, there's one at a bus stop just beside the tourist Information centre by Bulguksa Temple. This is ideal for anyone staying at any of the hotels in that area (eg Kolon Hotel) or having visited Bulguksa temple first thing in the morning.

The tour guide we had spoke limited English and the tour is essentially conducted in Korean. The guide gives a talk (in Korean) about the next site that's going to be visited and then a short video (in English and Chinese) is played for the benefit of foreigners. On arrival at the sites, the guide gives another talk but non Korean speakers can wander off and look around themselves. We felt the time allocated to each site was enough and we didn't feel rushed.

Although we didn't have much interaction with the guide, she was friendly and did her best to keep us informed. We felt like we were a group of tourists rather than 2 groups - Korean and foreigners.

A bonus of the tour that was unexpected was a martial arts demonstration at Golgulsa Temple which was very interesting to watch. There was a visit to a silk museum which was also interesting to see although we didn’t know what was being said! At first we thought it was an opportunity to sell us silk but this was not the case.

On top of the cost of the tour, you'll need to add entrance fees and lunch. At the time of writing, the only entrance fee was to Seokguram Grotto and lunch was 7000 won. Lunch is a Korean buffet at a local restaurant.

If it wasn't for Gyeongju City Tours I don't think we would've visited these places so it was good that this tour was available. The course we took was Course 2 and it only runs on certain days (see website for details).

The company's website is in Korean but further information about this and the other city tours offered by them can be found written in English at the Korean tourism website.

“Good value for money and time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Good value for money. We booked the tour at the Gyeongku Tourist Centre at the Singyeongju KTX station. It cost 15,000 won + 4,000 (entrance fee) and 7,000 lunch buffet. We had chosen Route 2 as the Course 1 already left.

The low point was the Tour guide do not speak English. It's good that the video had English part that explains the history of the next location.

If you are a tourist and had only one to two days to stay in Gyeongju, this is the way to go.

“Gyeongju City Tour - within a Day only”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

This is a company run tour company that offers a day tour of Gyeongju. You can either choose to take Route 1 to 4 within a day that starts from their office (next to the Gyeongju Express Bus station) or arrange to pick up from your hotel, if you speak Korean. You are required to make a booking a day before either from Seoul or from Gyeongju. Seats in the tour bus are usually busy and full on Weekends. Route 2 was recommended to us by the Sillabang Guest House owner, for historical site visits. Route no. 2 takes us all the way out of Gyeongju to the temples, King Munmu underwater tomb by the seaside, Silk Museum, Seogurom grotto and the Zen Temple where Korean kungfu originates. Price per pax is KWN15,000 Adult and Child is slightly lower. We also had a lunch stop by a local restaurant. It's KRW7,000 buffet per pax and its good variety, not included in the tour fare. The tour guide only speaks in Korean and not much of English but they will do their best to accommodate foreigners. If you are short of time and budget, this is the best place to go for a day tour of Gyeongju, from Seoul.
