“Best place to stay in Gyeongju”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2007

This is a real resort hotel on the lake and very much geared to the Korean tourist, so no Korean restaurant, though there were five others all serving top quality food. The gym and spa are huge and really excellent.
If you're visiting the area primarily for the ancient sites of the Silla kingdom you may as well be located here as anywhere. Some sites are in the town a few miles away, but there are no international standard hotels there. For the other main sites you need to travel by road and staying at the Hilton you're that bit nearer.
Ask for a lake view, it's very pretty. All in all this was good value for money and the staff were unfailingly courteous.

Lonely Planet types probably won't like this hotel, because it's away from the city in a resort area overlooking Bomun Lake. That means you'll have to take a taxi or rent a car if you want to travel around, but some very reasonably priced tours of Kyongju and the surrounding sights are available through the concierge desk, and the taxi ride from the train station is only 10-15 minutes (and costs about $10).

The service in the hotel is outstanding. I found that you can ask anyone on the staff for anything you need, and they'll immediately help you--or find someone who can. Also, if you DON'T need anything, they won't bother you. That's important to me. The room was large but not huge, with a comfortable bed, but a tub that seemed a little old. The hotel website advertises wireless internet; I didn't find a wireless signal, but there was an Ethernet cable on the desk, and I didn't have any problems connecting that way. The food in the restaurant (I ate at the lobby cafe) was very good but, from an American point of view, pricy. (Think $40 per person for a fine dinner buffet.)

Most of the guests, by the way, were Korean. It seems to be a very popular destination for well-to-do Koreans looking for a family vacation or weekend getaway. But you won't have any trouble in the hotel communicating in English.
