“A hidden jewel in the Gyeongju National Forest.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

If you are searching for a welcoming, cozy place to call home for a few nights I would highly recommend the JY Pension. It is situated perfectly between downtown Gyeongju and the ocean, both being a mere 20 minute drive from the quaint B&B nestled in the forest. Jae, the President of the facility who lives onsite, greeted us with open arms and a bright smile; even though we arrived around 9pm with a cantankerous toddler (a 2 year old). Our rooms were immaculately cleaned and themed perfectly pertaining to the color. Also offered onsite is a small minimart, cafe and hangout area with grills to cohort with fellow travelers/guests. The staff is willing to go out of their way to make your stay perfect. After our arrival we realized we didn't have any milk for our grumpy toddler and they sent out for some so that there would be some for us in the morning.

Also, the reasoning that I only give 4 out of 5 points for Sleep Quality is that the beds were slightly too firm for myself, but I still slept soundly each night of our stay (3 nights).

Room Tip: Highly recommend getting a room with a balcony and dining area, so you can enjoy breakfast/lunch/din...

We arrived late in the evening, and were half expecting to see Jeon (the owner) but there he was, waiting at the bus stop (a pre-arranged rendezvous) to take us to his pension! With the approaching winter months, it was already dark and cold.

The room has a green theme, and the décor was warm and cheerful. There is underfloor heating, and as well as reverse cycle heating provided by the air-conditioning. No fear of catching cold here!! We were asked if we would like to have dinner (very late) but we declined. Instead we opted for packets of Korean noodles which we cooked in the kitchenette, and suitably kept our hunger at a distance. As it was already late, dark and wintery, we decided to stay indoors for the night.

The morning, with the bright sunshine, revealed a sight that was so unexpected that we gasped in amazement. The landscape was filled with beautiful trees, in their various Wintery shades. As we were the only visitors (the others came only for the weekends), it was serenely quiet and beautiful. There was not a single person in sight, as we took a walk around the pretty neighborhood.

The pension has a beautiful Swiss-looking cottage which housed a restaurant. It also doubled up as a breakfast hall in the morning. BBQ also on offer as a dinner option, and is catered in a little shed for obvious reasons (the smoke and fire).

Our stay would not have been that enjoyable, had it not been for the warmth and friendliness of our hosts Jeon and the other co-owner (forgot his name). Although the location of JY Pension is quite remote, but the end result is well worth it. By the way, (for the single ladies only) I think Jeon is looking for a wife.

Room Tip: Please take JY Pension phone number with you wherever you go because, it is your 'best friend...

My husband and I stayed in JY Pension on 6th and 7th Dec 2012. The Pension is located in the middle of Gyeongju National Forest. It is a distance away from town, however once you reach the pension, every effort is worth it. It is located inside Chuwon village, and we are most surprised to find modern facilities in the middle of the nowhere. Heated floors (even in bathroom), free, strong wifi, cable tv, kitchen facilities, and most of all, beautifully decorated room.
The owner, Mr Jae is very warmth and helpful, he will suggest places of interest and will guide us on how to go. There is a bus stop at the entrance of the village (bus 100 and bus 150 can reach town). He would drive us out of the village to the bus stop everyday and when we go back to the village, he would wait there to drive us in.
We would strongly recommend anyone who visit Gyeongju to stay in this pension. It is like living in a dream mansion. And we found it in Gyeongju.

First of all while the way to jy pension, i surprised with the lake view, it made me even more to see this place. My friend and i stayed here on the end of october for 1 night and this pension is beyond my expectation, the place is so nice with the view of the tree turning into yellow and red. The room was clean and the facilities in the room was nice. And the host, uncle Jaeman was so nice to us, he even helped us to cook our bbq. When we arrived he upgrade our room to suite room (walnut room). He picked us on the millenium silla on time and the next day he sent us to bulguksa temple. The bbq was so good, i will recommend you the pork bbq with vegetable and rice. If i go back to korea again i will definitely stay at jy pension again. It was a great experience to stay here like living in a village with modern facilities.

JY pension leads us to Gyeongju. You can experience Autumn in South Korea through the character and the vastness of the colors surrounding this "dollhouse". Jae Mann Jeon is the warmest host I ever encounter. I had booked but cancel our first trip that was set last April 2012 and decided to push through this October. We were there last week and the feeling was just surreal. It is much nicer than the pictures and than the hotels that are within Bumon lake.

When I booked last October given 27 is a weekend, there is no available room. So I decided to write Mr.Jeon an e-mail and he gave us the Green Room. The room is large compared to rooms in Seoul, the green room has an attached dainty working kitchen and a balcony.

We are travelers from Doha and we reached Gyeongju through KTX from Seoul Station. Mr Jeon is kind enough to give us information about KTX. He also gave us a ride from Expo bus station to his pension. The place is dainty, autumn is at its best at Gyeongju National Frest which is where this pension is located.

Upon stepping inside the room, the room felt cosy and warm. The linens felt clean and washed. Toiletries, hair blower and towels are provided. Kitchen utensils and cooking facilities is provided as well.

A superb place, a dainty dollhouse, in addition with exemplary accommodating hosts. This is the place to be in Gyeongju. I am definitely going back to this place.

Room Tip: Select the room that has balcony. You can have a coffee and experience the serenity of the place.

We loved the JY Pension. The owners were in the process of giving to new owners when we were there. But every one there was friendly and so helpful to us. We were 4 adults and one toddler. Our rooms were lovely. The the owner had automatically upgraded us to a suite with kitchen facilities at no extra cost. it was so nice to be in the mountains instead of the lake with the high rise hotel strip . We had frogs serenading us, birds, forest and BBQ and amazing surroundings with a wonderful temple within walking distance. Our hosts picked us up at the expo bus stop and drove us to the pension. So easy to get around and great hiking. We would go back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite with kitchen ..

Gyeongju is one of the checkpoint of our road trip in southern part of South Korea which started from Busan. Surfing in the web I know pension is one of the good choice to stay in Gyeongju rather than hotel, and there are couple of choices which are available in English (as we all don't speak Korean). At last we choose JY Pension because of it's lovely photos being shown in it's website.

The location of JY Pension is deep inside the mountain (national park) in which you have to drive around 30 mins from city area which is quite remote to me. As we were quite late arriving the pension, my family once doubted if we had got the wrong direction. The last 10km which is one way hillside road so if you are driving you must be very careful with it. Luckily we arrived while Mr Han was waiting us right at the car park to check us out. We appreciate that a lot as it's quite cold (winter time) to stand outside the car park and just waiting for us.

Mr Han and Ms Min are really welcoming especially helping us for our BBQ dinner (which is one of the best meal we've had during the trip), providing travel guidance of Gyeongju, preparing the breakfast etc etc. They are really a great couple and we all enjoying staying in the pension.

Although the pension is located in the country area, everything is all up to standard. Superfast wifi, large samsung LCD TV (with all the HD channels that we could enjoy K-Pop and TV shows), warmed floor, detailed decorated interiors, nice bathroom with good shower. Everything is just so fine, warm feeling and cozy. We really enjoyed the stay and I am sure during summer time it's a getaway for anyone who loves the country side!
