“A bad experience at a good hotel”

I stay at Marriott's in the Albany area frequently, as my children attend school there. I have stayed at this Marriott before, and it is a lovely property, especially since the recent renovations.

Our problem this time was that we were put on the 8th floor, just across from a ballroom where a very raucous, drunken wedding was held. I have never stayed at a hotel where the meeting rooms were on the residential floors--the Marriott didn't used to be this way. Had there been a separate floor just for the festivities, it wouldn't have been a problem.

We stayed from Friday through Sunday. The problems began Friday night, as the wedding guests, for the most part, were also on our floor. Loud, intoxicated guests roamed the halls at all hours, occasionally with small children in tow, even at 2 AM.

The night of the wedding reception, more loud, drunken profanity, yelling, and door slamming ensued, as the partiers got into fight after fight. There was an elderly couple down the hall from us, who looked frightened as they entered their rooms.

We finally called the front desk around 9 PM, and were told security had already been alerted. Meanwhile, a room service order I had placed came up incorrectly, and the poor server took half an hour to return with my beer, at which point, my dinner was cold, and had to be sent back.

I called the desk several more times, as the noise and ruckus got worse and worse. I told them I would call the police if something wasn't done; they eventually called the police themselves. This went on until about midnight, with more family members screaming profanities and insults at each other in the halls.

I don't know how these people were able to afford the Marriott. I am sure guests were afraid to leave their rooms; I certainly was, after hearing the wedding guests screaming about the [-] who'd called security.

The next morning, on checkout, a couple of the guests were in the elevator with me, and looked me up and down in a hostile manner, which I ignored. I spoke with the manager, Colleen Salanger, who was very apologetic, and comped us the entire weekend.

SO--this is a lovely property, with great rooms, food, and service, and they did make it right for us. My issue is that the police should have been called a lot sooner-this is the sort of situation where guns come out. The safety of the guests should have been paramount.

I still recommend staying here, but ask if you are on a floor where there is a ballroom and if an event will be taking place if you are.

“Hotel Renovations Compete - Much Better!”

I recently stayed at the Albany Marriott while attending a seminar there. I was concerned about the property after reading previous reviews but found the hotel to be much better than I had anticipated. I spoke with staff about the previous negative reviews and was told that all renovations are now complete, the hotel is under new management and most of the old staff have been replaced. I am a seasoned traveler and quite picky, but both my husband and I found the hotel to be very nice and we would definitely stay there again. It is very nice now that it has been refurbished. Our room was nicely decorated, very comfortable and was spotless. All staff were very friendly, courteous and eager to please. All in all, we highly recommend this hotel to other travelers.

We booked this hotel for 3 nights because our older daughter was attending the National Young Leaders State Conference there. I booked it through AA.com to save money because their online rate was ridiculous. I paid $140 a night and I thought that was high for what I got! I attempted to add a night to the reservation when I found out my daughter needed to be there a day earlier than we planned and they wanted to charge me $225 for one night and I told them we would be arriving late after 11pm. I did not take the extra night there and stayed across the street at the Best Western for $69 and I wished we had stayed there for the entire time! The room we got was not the room we reserved. We were supposed to get a suite. We got a small room with two double beds. We asked to be moved immediately and they did accomodate our request. There is no fridge or micro in the rooms unless you ask for one and they bring them to your room and leave them on the floor. No stand or cart. Room was clean. Shower was awful with barely any water pressure and the fixture needs to changed. The gym was closed. Pool area was small, run down and not well maintained. Used towels were everywhere. The tables near the elevators on our floor were so dusty, my husband was able to write "clean me" in the dust with his finger. It remained there all weekend. There are plenty of places to eat on Wolf Road, so go elsewhere and avoid the restaurant in the hotel because it is pricey and not worth it. They charged our room 75 cents a day for the newspaper too. Staff was unfriendly. Not rude, but certainly didn't go out of their way. The worst part was that there was a bad sleet storm one night and they never shoveled or salted outside. Upon exiting the hotel to go into downtown Albany for the day, I slipped several times and needed the aid of my husband to get to our car without falling. I would never stay there again. I only stayed there because my daughter's group was there. Total waste of money otherwise.

“Warning, its the AIRPORT Marriott Albany NY”

A business hotel with none of the polish... I booked a 4 night stay at top dollar on the concierge floor of this hotel for Jan, 2008 and checked out after one night.

I asked for a quiet room and got a room overlooking the glide-path for the Albany airport. It turns out planes land as late as 1:30am (I heard and saw them). I called the front desk and asked them for a quiet room and they said they were sold out.

The room was comfortable but basic 'hotel' grade, not concierge grade. The alarm clock has a built in night-light so the room is never really dark. Between the planes and the light my night's sleep wasn't the best.

I got up and tried the shower only to find that the temperature goes no higher than 'swimming pool'.

So, if you like lots of plane noise, a light in your face while you sleep and taking cold showers in the morning - all at full price, stay here. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

“Construction's Over!”

Happily construction is over and peace reigns again at this excellent hotel, only now the public spaces are renewed as was the room (7th floor) that we stayed in. We chose this Marriott for our weekend visit to Albany because we've had better luck stayng at Marriotts elsewhere than most other hotels,/motels, plus we love the wonderful new beds. Bed didn't disappoint, hotel room was very clean and fresh, and everything worked. Only complaints were that the hair dryer was hard to find (hidden in a small hanging black bag in the closet--strange!), it would have been nice to have the TV on a turntable so it could more easily be rotated for viewing, and the heating/AC unit was loud and noisy when it kicked in and there was no way to set it on just "fan" for air movement. Staff were courteous everywhere at the hotel, room service was lightening fast (although the hotel wasn't fully booked this weekend), and food was quite good and well prepared - pleasant surprise! We've stayed at 1st class hotels across the country and this one rates favorably with some of the best! Looking forward to a return visit in a few months.
