“Not very informative or friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2014

The hotel does not offer transport from the airport, no guidelines on taxi rates makes it quite expensive...80Euros one way only to be told by other guests they paid 45Euros!
Arriving late in the evening and feeling hot and tired and then to discover no bottled water in our room, we were told to either boil water or buy.
Breakfast was very skimpy and repetitive, they put out a few slices of cheese and fruit that you need to ask to be filled up, so too for milk etc. The cook conveniently disappears just as you want to order omelettes!
Coffee were great and so too the fruits!

We had buffet dinner once, this was lovely and highly recommended!

We have spend a week there and in that time we never felt welcome,we had the feeling that staff preferred to communicate in French and never really made an effort in talking to us although they spoke perfect English.
No tourist information is being offered, when we asked what is on offer, we were told to tell them what we want to do!!! Oh and not to use any outside car rentals, they will arrange a car for us! Only on the 3rd or 4th day we noticed that they have a temporarily car rental- & tourist agent set up at the upstairs patio area!

Internet were dismal!

We were staying in one of the garden view cottages close to the road and main entrance, it has a lovely kitchen & lounge area, bedroom were nice too, bathroom with shower. Issues in room - The oven was never cleaned properly before we arrived, dirt and grime everywhere! The patio door doesn't close properly and one of the safety latches were broken. Toilet needed to be flushed twice as the water keeps pushing back up again!

Lots of mosquitoes inside the room, we complained about this and they immediately send out someone to spray the entire room.

We had to ask twice for toiletries and toilet paper to be topped up and it took them more than an hour to deliver it to our room.

Pool / beach towels are handed out at reception where we were told only one small dingy towel allowed per person!!! Btw there are no lounge chairs on the beach so beach towel is all you have got to sit on!

This beach area is lovely, it is undisturbed and quiet, unfortunately that means very few if any restaurants, a small shop about 10 min walk away. The first day while on the beach, we were approached by the police and warned not to leave any valuables unattended on beach. No diving equipment such as snorkels or goggles at hotel or anywhere close by.

Transport - we took the public bus and it took us about and hour to reach the main town, called Victoria, cars can be rented but we didn't want to bother. The bus stops a few metres away from the resort and is frequent.

Bring your own suntan lotion, toiletries, mosquito repellant and basic medicine, these are not easy to find!

Room Tip: We stayed at garden view hotel, not the nicest as close to road and noise.

To cut the long story short, I would go back anyday and anytime to this same hotel even if I was offered something more luxurious...the staff, the food especially the breakfast, the rooms are spacious, room service is amazing...well done to the management.

We had a great holiday here with our Familiy and we have appreciated the kindness of the people working here. The hotel is very quit, we enjoyed that and it is located closed to a beach, after a short walk of approx. 5 min. This is a great place to be. We had the Garden Villa downstairs. We liked it because it´s more separate from the rest of the hotel. For the breakfast we had our sportive exercise (approx. 5 min.) - because the restaurant is of the top of the hill. For the dinner we had a great pickup with a golf-car from the hotel. The food was always wonderful and tasty and a lot of different typical creole and international food. Twice a week there was a barbecue, absolutely great. The kitchen team was during the barbecue there and explained the typical creole food. Absoluty tasty, we loved that!
We had payed for our trip a half-board and this was a good idea because if you buy your food in other restaurants it´s sometimes really expensive and really not so tasty like at Valmer resort.

Also you can find on every beach a little local snack e. g. during lunch time.

You do not really need your own car, because there are a very good bus system. Timetable is ok, not so long to wait. We used only the local buses to go to the capital or other beaches. Very cheap prices for the bus tickets and always interesting to meet people from the Seychelles. There are some wonderful places to go:
- Anse Royal
- Anse Takamaka
- Pineapple Studios
- Studio of painter Michael Adams
- Church in Baie Lazare ( we visited on Easter Sunday)
- Cerf Island
- capital Victoria
- snorkling at Anse Takamaka and in the North at Hotel Sunset Beach Resort is absolutely great
and many more.

We really enjoyed our stay.

This not the easiest hotel to reach with a baby and after a day of walk. But the room were clean and quiet.
The water of the swimming pool was too cold unfortunetly.
We have appreciated the kindness of the people working here. To have dinner with my wife they accept to put a guard in front of our room where our baby was sleeping.
These kind of things make the stay unforgettable .

We payed € 280 for a sea view room, for our surprise, when we arrived in the room was a tip of sea, pratically without view. I didn't believe. So we complained and they said that the rooms on upper area were full. We had to wait for 3 days to move to another room.
In the reservation we had to pay a compulsory €60 for a "new year gala dinner". In the first day we asked in the reception if we could take our own bottle of champagne and the lady said that it wasn't a problem and they wouldn't charge for this. But in the new year dinner when we asked to put our bottle in the ice the restaurant informei that we had to pay the cork, that was ridiculous, why they didn't say this when we asked in the first day? You pay €60 for a dinner and you even dont't have a glass of water included. This dinner was set up for 7:30pm and we arrived there at 8pm and they said that they were late, asked to have a seat in the bar to wait (there wasn't no seats anymore) and consume their expensive drinks like an idiot.
The food was extremally expensive in the restaurant, the cheapest option was a pasta a la bolognhese, for 295 rupees ( around $30).
The breakfast was poor and the same thing everyday. The ladies in the restaurant were very un friendly, looked like that they were there obligated, specially the older lady, with a very bad humorated face.
In our last night we asked for the food in our room (was only 10 steps of stairs down) and they asked to pay $10 to delivery in our room but if we would get the food it was free of charge. So we decided to get the food there when they called. We ordered the food at 18h and at 21h nobody had called us. We would have to wake up at 5h on the next day to get the airplane. When we called to the restaurant the older lady was very rude and said that didn't know when the food would be ready because the restaurant was busy, she was really unpolite. And we already had payed for the dinner in the reception because in the next day nobody would be ther early to close the account. My husband decided to go down in the reception and cancell the payment. Its funny because this hotel is like a self catering, they have oven, refrigerator, panels, cups, plates and everything to do a meal in the room but they always were trying to overcharge everything.
During the night had a lot of cocoroachs in the stairs, running close to the rooms.
The rooms were big, the tv had 9 channels, the bed was confortable, the pillows were high. The bathroom was big and looked cleaned, except for the thing to put the toilet paper, it was full of dust.
The internet only worked in a living área, uppon to the reception and many times it didn't conect.
It's very importante to be aware that this hotel is compeltely inclined, in the top of a hill and for people with limited mobility i really don't recommend. For many times i for very tired to go to the restaurant (it was on the top) or to my room.
For two days i head a very boring noise from the upper área, was like someone was dragging furniture, one day it starts at 22pm and in the last day at 4am.
This hotel is in the south and you need a car to eat out of the hotel and go to another beaches, everything is far. To go to Victoria is 40 minutes driving and 20 to the airport.
If you stay on garden view room you become totally isolated from the rest of the hotel. The garden rooms has a separate pool, nothing attractive and you stay on the bottom and has to climbing a great hill and a lot of stairs to arrive in the restaurant. It really doesnt worth the money.

Room Tip: Choose a room as upper as possible.

Dear Clara,

We are in receipt of comments regarding your stay at Valmer Resort. We are disappointed to know that you did not enjoy your stay with us.

Seychelles has a unique flora and fauna and the resort has been built in a particular way to ensure very little damage to the nature. Our rooms have tropical views of the surrounding areas, some of the sea and others of the nature. Please note we do trim the trees from time to time however a permit is needed to trim and cut trees in Seychelles. Management tried their best to accommodate you in a villa with a better view a couple of days later one we had a room available.

After speaking to the relevant department, the corkage issue seems to be a misunderstanding because the reception advised you that the restaurant does charge for corkage. Paying for corkage does not only apply at our hotel, but it is an international standard in restaurants. The New Year Gala dinner fee included an expansive buffet, entertainment until late and fireworks at midnight .

We are a small hotel with limited staff and we apologise for the slight delay on that night. We have a lot of different seating options available, including on the bar stools that I do recall were vacant.

I would like to clarify your comments concerning pricing, we have 3 menus available at the restaurant; a la carte menu, half board menu and a light snacks menu. We believe that our prices are competitive, especially our light meals menu, as our menus include 15% tax, compared to other restaurants which exclude tax until the final bill. I am sorry if you felt our food did not meet your expectations. Your comments concerning our restaurant staff is alarming, especially concerning the older lady, our head waitress, you mentioned who has been with us for over 10 years. We have never encountered an issue with her, as most of our guests adore her! The festive season is a very stressful/busy time for us, especially since we have limited staff, however I apologise if you felt that they were unfriendly towards you.

Thank you for your wonderful comments about our rooms, we are happy that you found the bed comfortable.
We provide WIFI for free in our public lounge area but please note internet in the Seychelles is not as reliable as overseas, so at times there are problems, but this gets resolved within 12 hours. Our Garden Studios are located at the bottom of the hotel however we do have a club car for our guests to use whenever needed.

Rest assured that all your feedback has been shared and discussed with our team to further improve our services and facilities.

Kind regards,

Bernice Devoud

We had the pool villa. Really good room and facility. Lovely part of the world, the location is ideal in terms of seclusion and the local beaches are unspoilt and some of best in Seychelles, a bit far from the town and ferries to other (better) islands though - the ferries run a sparse service so this is an issue to visit la digue in one day for example.

The resort had one major issue which was the food. While nothing tasted bad, the menu was very limited (creole curry daily) and leftovers re-made as a new dish for breakfast/dinner the next day was normal. This was especially true for half board where the dinners were same same same. None of it was better than average meal and the pictures on resort website of the food is not what you will get in person. The chefs seem part of the resort family so I don't see any change coming any time soon.

Looking at other reviews, some liked being left alone by the 'friendly staff'. Personally I felt they just didn't know what to do and so didn't try to do anything. We actually found this to be the case throughout the Seychelles except at the five star resorts we went to for lunch (to escape the Valmer food!) so you're going to get this in most places. Perhaps I am spoilt by ten years of living in Asia where the locals are always friendly and the service generally excellent. This was definitely not that. Also note there is no concierge, no expertise at reception or brochures in the resort to help you book things to do.

There are definitely better places to stay, but at price range I could not say it is bad. We enjoyed our holiday immensely despite some of the above.

Dear Rupert,

I thank you for spending your vacation with us in December and we appreciate your feedback which have been shared with the team. We are happy to read that you enjoyed the Pool Villa and the secluded location of the hotel.

We do apologise if you felt the half board set menu was limited, however please note you booked on half-board which is a set menu with 2 options for each course. We regularly have buffets to give guests a wider selection of choices, at times up to 3 times a week. We also have an a la carte menu available for lunch and for dinner for guests who are not on half board. The photos on our website is in fact from our a la carte menu and not the half board set menu. After speaking to the chefs they have advised me that your wife regularly spoke to them to make other food for her instead of the half board meals, as she was pregnant.

We are concerned with your comments concerning being fed leftovers. Let me assure you that our food is of the freshest and highest quality and we not serve leftovers to our guests. We do hope that you enjoyed our expansive New Year’s Eve buffet as we strived to ensure that all guests could enjoy the variety provided as well as the entertainment and fireworks!

It is a great shame to read that your expectations on the service in Seychelles as a whole did not meet your expectations. Our reception staff is knowledgeable with services should a guest ask for information, for example we can arrange diving, car hire and boat charters. There are unfortunately no brochures as Seychelles is primarily a beach destination.

I am pleased to learn that you enjoyed your holiday with us despite some of the above. Rest assured that all your feedback is shared and discussed with our team to improve on our services and facilities, in order to guarantee the best experience for our future guests.

We hope to get an opportunity of welcoming you back to Valmer Resort.

Kind regards,

Bernice Devoud

My family and I have just come back from a holiday at Valmer Resort. The place is beautifully built and blends into the environment. I loved the vegetation and views the facility afforded us. The staff at Valmer are great and try to stay away from being bothersome. They allowed us to have our holiday in peace but they were very helpful when requested for help.

The Beach at Baie lazare which is across the road from this resort is also beautiful and not crowded. We loved it.

I highly recommend this place.

My downside for Valmer, the chef is not creative at all, we had the same breakfast setup and menu every day. By the 4th day, my family were opting to eat elsewhere. With the same ingredients, the chef should have been able to come with different menus for different days.
