“The Ephelia chefs make you drop all pretense of being on a diet ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

Constance Hotels of course have a reputation preceding them but inspite of high expectations and I was not disappointed at all ...

From the check in lounge, not a reception, a dedicated check in lounge with cold scented towels, fresh juice, coffee, tea or water to the check out - it was just smooth sailing all the way.

My readers know I am a sucker for luxury and 5 star accommodation and hospitality, but that often does not reflect the experience on site. Here, EVERY expectation was met.

When being delivered by a hostess in an electric trolley to my 'senior suite' on the top floor right at the edge of North Beach, I stood for a moment in awe looking across the lawn to the ocean, although I had visited the resort in March for a day and seen the resort.

Staying for 5 nights was just what the doctor prescribed. Extended walks across the resort to either the Corossol Restaurant at the South Beach in the evening or strolls in the early morning along the two beaches got me some exercise, as did the available sporting options like rock climbing, abseiling and zip lining, besides taking a bike and cycling across the resort, warm rain showers notwithstanding. All the suites and villas are finished to exacting standards and things work, from sockets to the high speed internet connection and the kettle in the room to make tea or coffee WITHOUT having to wait for an endless, agonizing half hour for room service to deliver, as recently experienced at a 5 star Nairobi hotel.

Fluffy towels, soft robes, comfortable slippers and pillows which leave nothing to be desired when at the end of a long day going to sleep.

And from morning to evening, there is FOOD ... from the breakfast which I normally took at the Seselwa, just a few metres from 'my place', to a casual lunch taken at the beach side at the Kabana when not roaming the island in search of stories or to chase information, to dinner ....

That was a buffet with two active cooking stations, not just one, and changing themes which brought culinary delights from around the world to my palate. I tried ever so hard but still gained 3.2 KG.s as measured on the scale in my bathroom - itself as big as some smaller rooms I have seen in other hotels or resorts.

The chefs at the Ephelia are regularly partaking in group wide food competitions and international cooking events and it was no surprise that the group trophy for 2012 was kept at the Ephelia.

Add to that the courteous staff, ever ready to give one a lift on their service trolleys and have a chat along the way, ever ready to go places, get things and answer questions, endless a list from a scribe of course who travel writes, they deserve a standing ovation. Management too, present and visible and approachable, in fact they made the round to talk to guests every day and reacted to the smallest comments. Here I met a team Constance can be proud of and a resort which must surely vie every year to be the leader of the Constance pack ...

Next stop perhaps the Constance Lemuria on Praslin but time will tell. Of all my 5 star experiences this year, and that includes top ranked hotels and resorts, the Ephelia comes into contention for a top three ranking for 2012 in my own personal 'best list' ... And they deserve that because they provided me with one of the most complete and best executive hospitality experiences I had all year ... and with my amount of travel, THAT means something.

Room Tip: All types of accommodation are superior, but if taking a senior suite, the top floor gives the best...

This is an expensive holiday, make no bones about that, but, if you can afford it you will be amazing. It is one of the few hotels where i have had a wow factor walking into the room. It is large, very nicely designed and has the bathroom open plan, you have to see it to appreciate it.
The kids club was one of the best kids club we have found as the staff were fantastic and really entertained the children. Tennis lessons, Kayaking, disco, movie night etc.. etc.. our kids wanted to stay there from after breakfast until 9pm (the kids club go to dinner together leaving the parents to enjoy a romantic meal)
The food was very good, if anything was not fresh the chefs would make new for you. Variety was excellent and quality like wise.
We were upgraded to a private vill with swimming pool and butler for our second week...wow.
The children thought he lived in a shed at the bottom of our walled garden as whenever we telephoned for him, he magically appeared with a buggy to take us wherever we wanted to go.
The diving was new and had a few teething problems but the staff were again fantastic and we dived with the same staff as last year at Constance Lemuria on Praslin. Same price for diving (expensive) but excellent service, none of the packed boats here, it's like having your own private boat.
The spa was great, the location .... it's the Seychelles ..... what more is there to say, except for such a large hotel it seems very quiet and tastefully landscaped between two fantastic beaches.
Drinks and food are very expensive , but like i said, if you can afford it , it's worth it.

We stayed at the Ephelia, in a Hillside Villa, for 8 nights in August 2012. We had an amazing stay and can’t speak too highly of the resort. It is huge, so even though it was fully booked while we were there, it never seemed busy and we had plenty of space. The grounds are beautiful, it is set in a National Park and has 2 private beaches. The North beach was stunning, the South was also nice but at high tide does not really have any sand left, and is quite windy, so better for water sports. As we were on the North side in our villa we did not really feel the need to go to the South beach. There are 4 pools surrounded by sun beds. As we had our own pool we did not feel the need to use them, as we preferred the privacy of our villa. However when we saw the pools, they were never busy, even in the middle of the day. I think this is because lots of the villas have their own pools, and the beach is so lovely. Again, it was very relaxing for the resort to feel so peaceful, it wasn’t like some hotels where you have to rush in the morning to reserve sun beds.

There are 5 restaurants, one buffet style, the other 4 you need to make a reservation at. We reserved a few days at a time and therefore never had a problem getting in to any of the restaurants. The restaurants have different themes so there is plenty of choice and the food is excellent. I am a vegetarian and did not have any problems eating. The restaurants sometimes have a themed set menu and even when there were no vegetarian options on the set menu, the chefs were happy to make something vegetarian for me, even coming out at the end of the meal to check if my alternative menu was ok. The restaurants were never actually full while we were there as they only make one booking for each table per night, so you are not rushed and often if you go earlier, lots of the other tables are empty until the other diners come in later.

Our room was spectacular, our villa had its own private infinity pool overlooking the bay and North beach. When we woke up in the morning we saw the stunning view, it was breathtaking. The villa had excellent facilities, such as a decking with sunbeds, table and chairs and umbrella by the pool, a separate decking area with massage beds, an indoor and outdoor shower, double sinks, glass doors all around to open up the view, Apple TVs with free movies and music, as well as the internet, an ice machine etc and all the usual things you would expect. It was very secluded, no one could see into our villa or outdoor area, and equally we couldn’t see or hear anyone else. The hillside villas also come with a golf cart which you can drive around the resort, which saved a lot of time as it is a large resort. However people in the other rooms can get a buggy shuttle around the resort which is very regular. Our villa host, Raktim, was extremely helpful and attentive, making all our reservations for dinner and activities, posting postcards, checking if we needed anything twice a day, organising all room service for times when he knew we were out, arranging taxis etc. He also brought lovely little surprises to our villa, such as afternoon tea and cake, champagne and canapés, or breakfast tea and coffee, all complimentary. All of the staff were very polite, friendly and attentive.

The hotel has a huge host of free activities available, which we had no idea about until we arrived. There is an excellent fitness centre which runs lots of additional activities such as bike tours of the local area, kayaking in the mangroves, early morning yoga, pilates, water aerobics, squash and tennis tournaments etc. Although we travelled as a couple, there were lots of families, and it seemed very family friendly, little touches like having beach toys on the beach for the children. There is a ‘wet weather’ programme of activities, and every day you can feed the giant tortoises at 4. On the beach there is a boat club where you can take part in activities such as kayaking or wind sailing for free. We did this and saw stunning views. There are no motorised water sports at the resort, I think to keep it peaceful. We hired a car for a couple of days and drove to Beau Vallon beach, which was lovely but not as nice as the beach at Ephelia, and did jet-skiing there. The beautiful spa in the resort is a Shiseido spa and the largest spa in the Indian ocean. You can visit during the day for free to use the facilities, such as the thermal pool, Jacuzzis, pool, steam room and sauna, but obviously have to pay for treatments. I did not have any but prices were comparable to a health spa in the UK.

I have seen a lot of people criticise the price of food and drinks. We were half board, which I highly recommend (as dinner is about £45-£50 pp without alcohol). Drinks were not cheap, but no more expensive than any other 5* resort I have stayed in, and actually no more expensive than prices in bars in central London. There is a shop a few hundred metres from the North entrance where you can buy cheap alcoholic and soft drinks. We did this for drinks to have in our villa.

Thank you to all the staff for making our holiday so memorable. We can’t fault our stay, really didn’t want to leave and can’t wait to go back!

Room Tip: Stay in one of the villas (spa, hillside or family). Get a hillside villa if you want an amazing vie...

My wife and myself had a good stay in spa villa 37. Anabel and than Angelic(for couple of days)looked after us. It seems like they are very new to this profession. The restaurants were better than expected, although it was hard to get tables for couple of restaurants. The spa and the activities provided were awesome. Couple of points on which I think the management should focus are:-
Should have adequate club cars for on time pick up and drops. And need to focus more on the cleanliness and maintenance of the villa.
We always had to wait long time for club cars and our room boy Fernando seemed like he was in a rush to finish the villa. Otherwise we had a good stay.

our first trip to seychelles and we were very disappointed. we have travelled to mauritius and maldives several times. But our experience in was very disappointing. we had complained several times that our AC in our room wasn't working and after 8 days they moved us to another room. we were struggling with the kids, as they couldn't sleep in the heat. service was very poor, you could see at the staff faces that they weren't happy, so how could they make the guest welcome. Food quality was average, we just expected our experience to be nicer. But one thing was really nice, which was the kids club. the kids had a great time whenever they visited. a lot of activities... other than that we didn't like the resort. Its sad that our experience turned out like that, don't think we will be visiting seychelles again.

Seychelles is a nice spot for relaxing. The Constance Ephelia resort has 2 beaches which are very nice. It is probably the main advantage to other hotels in Mahe. The staff is friendly. The facilities are quite good. You have every day different activities at the hotel which are interesting. These activities are coordinated from the fitness center i.e. biking, aquagym, kayak etc. All these activities are for free and guided by a professional guy. They also have some turtles which are fed by the guests at 16:00 every day.The fitness center is well equiped and has a nice pool for swimming. Rooms are acceptable but not at a 5 star level. All rooms benefit from a good video on demand sysyem which is free. The hotel is huge. You have to use a club car to move around which shuttles every 10 minutes. Due to its extension you never get the impression of a crowded atmosphere.

There are 5 restaurants which offer lunch and dinner. If you are not staying on half board you will have to pay crazy prices for a dinner. Prices for lunch and dinner are overstated. For a hamburger you will pay 20 euros and if you want to have a full dinner 65 euros per person with no drinks included. We stayed in Tahiti and Maldives in 5 star hotels and never paid such prices.

In order to avoid these prices you can rent a car and have dinner outside the hotel (highly recommended).

There are tour operators available at the hotel for several day trips i.e.excursion to La dique or Praslin. Both trips are worth it. Again you will to take a deep breath when you hear about the prices they charge, but it is worth it.

All in all you have to be ready for some material extra costs when you travel to seychelles. When you ask for a taxi and they tell you how much he charges you wonder if he is picking you up by helicopter or by car.

The weather is in our experience unpredictable. During one week stay it rained 2 days (all day long).

We recommend this hotel. Especially for beach lovers

We just returned from our holiday to Mahe, Seychelles, where we stayed for 8 nights at Constance Ephelia.
We have travelled in many exotic destinations and we feel obliged to write a review because it was one of the best resorts we have ever stayed.

We stayed in a junior suite which was spacious and very well located. The design of the rooms and the resort in general is impeccable and blends harmoniously with the natural environment. Attention has been paid to every detail and the natural environment has been preserved with great respect.

The best thing with the resort was the staff and the service provided. Since our arrival everybody has been more than helpful with everything and willing to provide us with the best advice for our holidays and needs.

In particular we want to thank Reza for all the help and tailor made advice that he provided us with for our staying in Mahe. It has been the first time that a member of a resort’s personnel has provided us with the insights we wanted and needed in order to enjoy our holidays to the maximum. He truly listened to our needs and gave us the optimum guidance for places to see, visit, eat, beaches for swimming and an insights to the local culture and what we should expect from the island. We should have wasted time and effort if not for him. He discouraged us many times from unnecessary choices that would have deprived us from valuable holiday time. If you plan to stay at this resort, please ask for his advice when you arrive.

Apart from Reza we would like to thank all the hotel staff for the valuable help and service and for making our vacations so special. For that, many thanks to Anisha, Fabienne and Bernard for all their help and time.

It has been an excellent experience in a great resort with the best staff.
