We stayed at the Ruth Rimon Inn in Safed Israel in June 2005. This hotel is a collection of very picturesque buildings from the 17th century, the Ottoman period of history. It is located within walking distance of a well- known artists colony with winding cobblestone streets and breathtaking views. We entered the cozy lobby area to check in, which was smooth and efficient.
On the way to our room, we noticed that the hotel was decorated with Israeli art, painted by some of Safed’s artist residents. It definitely gave the hotel a sense of character and feeling of being immersed in history.
Our room had a patio on the outside with a beautiful view of Mt Meron. Once you entered the room through the archway, it was spacious and clean, with wood floors, a king sized bed, television and mini-bar, and an ample sized bathroom. We were told that each room was different, and some contained a Jacuzzi. Although the rooms have been renovated, I could imagine myself staying there when it was built, for it contained some of its original character and architecture.
The hotel had a large outdoor pool, which seemed to be empty during our stay so I had it all to myself. The one drawback is that the pool is only open until 6pm, due to the rule of having a lifeguard present, so it doesn’t allow much time to use it if you check in later. The pool area also had table tennis, along with plenty of lounges and chairs.
During check-in we asked about local tours and were immediately set up with a private tour given by an Israeli tour guide who was a lifetime resident of the area and had a thorough knowledge of its history. We were enchanted with the stories he told and places he took us, and vowed to return the next day to buy some art.
After our tour of the artists’ colony and its history we had dinner in their restaurant. We sat at a table near the window where we had a spectacular view of Mt Meron. The buffet dinner offered a generous selection of Israeli foods, including salads, main courses, and desserts. The price was extremely reasonable, especially given the delicious food offerings and the ambience.
Although the hotel also contained a spa, as well as a fitness room and sauna we did not get the opportunity to use this. We will save this for our next visit.
After dinner we took a stroll through the ancient city that contains many historic synagogues, restaurants, cafes and private residences.
When we went to sleep, we were pleased about the quietness and peacefulness of this hotel.
An Israeli breakfast buffet was included with the room. This offered fresh fruit, omelets, cheeses, fish, hot dishes, breads, cakes and beverages.
After breakfast we took a jeep tour of the Upper Galilee, then back to the hotel where we took another stroll through the artists colony, where there are many reasonable and beautiful artwork to buy. We stopped to buy some freshly squeezed juice on the street that was really a treat. Once we checked out, my only regret was that we did not have the time on this trip to stay another night.
For those wanting a romantic getaway, containing some adventure, this definitely fits the bill.
