First Impressions: About 100 metres south from Mary's Well, along Al-Bishara Street, stands the Tishreen Restaurant with its unassuming façade of beige, rough-hewn stonework (typical architecture of the area) and heavy brown doors. Upon entering, one feels the welcoming, homey ambience of the place. Of course, after all, it used to be a house, transformed into a dining establishment by two up-and-coming restaurateurs Ahsan and Musa.
PROS: Location... location... location is its best asset. Close to the Greek Orthodox Church and a block from Mary's Well, it is easy to find. There's parking nearby. Offering a mixed of traditional Arabic-International fusion-style menus, there is something for everyone. They also have an extensive alcohol menu. Portions are ample. The house specialty: Original Muhammar (Taboun bread slathered with onion rings and chicken) is great. And so is the Chicken Cordon Bleu. Well, anything straight from the wood oven is a winner. The food presentation is pleasing and creative, like the ones we normally associate with gourmet dining. Service is friendly and attentive, even going out of their way to help.
CONS: Let's face it, the restaurant is on the smallish side. It's a stretch when the establishment claims it can cater to large groups. Our tour group of 10 people occupied nearly 1/3 of the floor area. So you can imagine a party of three dozen people! Service is on the slow side, but I think I can say that this applies to all establishments, Arabic restaurants as a whole are not designed for high turnover in mind. Maybe it's the culture; one is expected to relax and linger as if you're a guest at someone's home. Lastly, ranging from £10 for the chicken breast to £30 for the 400-gr plancha tenderloin steak, the gourmet dining experience is reflected in the moderately expensive pricing.
Verdict: Definitely worth a visit. If I live here and I've got out-of-town visitors, this is my go-to place. May not be the best in Nazareth, but no doubt in the top three. Recommended. Grade A-minus.
