“Grossly Expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2011

Four friends stayed 1 night in the 2 bedroom Villa. One of our party had stayed at the Tropical 12 months before . On her recommendation , we joined her for our first and only visit . We arrived late in the evening and the reception staff were unavailable but did have our reservation . We could not confirm a price as the staff were not on site . We had dinner and went to our villa . The kitchen floor was covered in bugs , literally thousands . We had no hot water in the double bedded room . The lighting was very poor for reading . We slept well and after breakfast were able to talk to the reception about the cost of the villa . AUD$920 per night . So for my wife and I the cost was AUD$460. It was our own fault for staying a night without knowing the price . I felt very uneasy going to be not knowing the price but there was nothing that could be done .
The food was nice and the property quite simple and pleasant . It is a basic 3 star property . No one would be able to complain about the property if it was a reasonable price . We have travelled more then 20 times to Indonesia staying at various grades of accommodation so I do have a reasonable handle on what costs should be . The charges by this hotel were an absolute rip off .
The price did include all meals and 2 beers . But when the breakfast is advertised as AUD$6 and lunch and dinner AUD$6 - $10 , there is no justification in charging what they do for accommodation .
We wanted to stay for 4 nights and I spoke on the phone to the man running the property and said that we were happy to move into a hotel room and could they offer a better price for the next 3 nights . There was no discount and the rate would be AUD$260 for 2 people and AUD$230 each for the 2 single ladies who required their own rooms . Totally unaffordable .
Internet was virtually non exsistent but I dont blame the hotel for that . I realise they are in a remote area . I just make that note for anyone who may be working and require the internet .

To whom it may concern,

When your friend came the previous year the resort was still " The Tropical Beach Hotel, Club and Spa" but It became a part of the Franchise Nomad Surf Resorts in 2010.

This change brought a lot of renovations. And its not only a hotel. We are now an all-inclusive package which offers many more things (all meals surf guiding, free beers, free drinks, unlimited snacks all day, massages, etc, etc) and target e different type of tourists than what it had in the past.

Thank you

I stayed at the hotel for four nights whilst on recent trip recently and found it to be good value for money. if you’re doing business in the local mine or elsewhere on the island it is a very pleasant place to stay, but it is very remote (approx 3km to the nearest township).

that isolation is a benefit though if you are here on holidays and are content to sit back and do absolutely nothing, or if you are a keen surfer with plenty of uncrowded beaches and breaks.

the hotel is now managed by a couple of Australian surfers under the nomad surfers banner http://www.nomadsurfers.com/en/asia/indonesia/sumbawa/surfcamp/154.html and the chef is also Australian but does cook some great Asian and international foods

from a facilities point of view it would probably be considered a three star resort, but the food and service would rate higher than that

certainly worth the visit and better than the other two hotels nearby

Room Tip: try to get rooms 11-15 overlooking the pool
