I would not have considered trying Arab food if I was not a great fan of the gotolombok web site, they are always letting us know about new and interesting places to go to in Lombok, particularly when you receive their monthly email newsletters. So I went to Al Hamra, and the experience wowed me. The staff all seem to be kids [locals not arabs although the owner does come from Yemen and his son dos work in the kitchen when not at school], but they are so relaxed and so professional, in a casual sort of way. The food is definitely different! Kebouli rice,so fragrant, the kebabs so tasty, simple things like sambousas and shoarma are great and even their pizzas are different with the dough being rolled with spices like cinnamon, etc. After I read all the dish descriptions on gotolombok.com I could not wait to try, and was not disappointed. They have a wonderfully refreshing fresh strawberry drink, with yoghurt I think, great when you arrive and at end of meal their Arab Coffee again features cloves, cinnamon and other spices. You will even see a few black clad arab women slipping into the private curtained rooms, a rarity in Lombok even though strictly Muslim in most parts. As a final bonus it is dirt cheap! I finished up going back there for 3 lunches in the week I was in Lombok, trying something different each day. Not my choice for dinner as the place is strictly Halal so no alcohol, but great for a quick lunch.
