“Over priced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

Beautiful location no doubt about it. Friendly staff but otherwise i was very disappointed. Ok, so im not a surfer but enjoyed SUPPING and walking - the pool was a green slim pond the whole time we stayed, that was 10 days, so by the time you walked up from your beach swim, you were ready for another one, but no safe pool to swim in. Good selection of food. The rooms, although quaint were a little undesireable. We had roughed it for the rest of our trip round Bali and Lombok and i was looking forward to the luxury you would expect at the price you pay for that place. Between 11pm and 12 the power goes off for the rest of the night, so your room becomes like a sauna - you are warned not to open your door as the monkeys come in and cause havoc apparently. In the bathroom we had rats, scorpions and snakes. And for an eco friendly place our toliet leaked water the whole time and had quite obviously for some time. So overall very disappointed., Thought it was extremely overpriced for waht you got.

Guests have the choice to keep the electricity running at night. If requested by guests we leave the electricity on all night for an extra charge, but this happens rarely and most requests come when guests have medical needs. The electricity comes from our own generators, as we are off the grid. We normally run the electricity for 17 hours per day turning on at 7 am and off at midnight. Electricity stays on if guests are still in the restaurant bar after midnight. We are trying very hard to preserve the environment, and so the burning of fossil fuels all night when people are sleeping is against our philosophy. However, the rooms are all designed for good ventilation while temperatures in the night in June are only about 24 - 25 degrees centrigrade with cool breezes. Night temperatures are a few degrees warmer in the wet season. It's much cooler here than in Bali because we have nearby ocean on both sides and no concrete buildings, narrow alleys or asphalt roads. We appreciate that some guests can take a couple of days to acclimatise. All guests are given an led torch which is ample light for reading in bed. Our pool is clean and staff have been instructed to keep it that way. Please note we are waiting for the announcement from the Government that the electricity is coming in late January when we will be able to keep the electricity on all the time. Our prices reflect the cost to run a resort in a remote location. We work very hard to keep our guests happy and appreciate the opportunity to talk to guests when they are not happy about something.

A friend and I stayed for 3 nights as part of a bigger trip in Indonesia. The spot is great and the pool area is very comfortable. The communal area for dining is lovely and it was great chatting with other guests. The staff and the other guests definitely made the experience better. The staff are helpful and friendly, although it was embarrassing to watch how Moira and Kerry speak to their staff.
The food is OK. If you are vegetarian, learn the Indonesian word for it so you can be clear when you order. It seems the staff do the best with the budget they have. I wonder if it was because we came to the end of the high season that some ingredients were not included in the dishes? Or not available at all?
There is another review about the droppings in the rooms. We also experienced this and were told it was Ghecko droppings but then we did find a rat in our bathroom. The staff dealt with this quickly but still it was not pleasant. I normally travel on a tighter budget so this was a big spend for me but cheaper accommodation has always been cleaner than these rooms. I did feel that everything needed a bit of attention given the cost of the stay and with the resort being sold as luxurious. The towels in the massage room were also not changed regularly.
It also transpired that we were the only guest required to pay up front for our stay... which was incredibly difficult as we didn't travel with our card reader. We still don't know why we were the only guests asked to pay up front. Upon our departure and some other guests there were public disputes about money through Moira being on the end of the phone to her staff.
Overall I think heaven is overpriced for what it is but we met some lovely people who return for the great surf and had a relaxing time. The staff were also so pleasant and welcoming which made a big difference to our stay. I would recommend staying there for a relax and a great surf.

Room Tip: It's hot at night with no power. if you book in advance ask for a room that gets cool at night

Dear Rachael
We are pleased that you had a wonderful holiday and sorry that you couldn’t spend more time here. Most of our guests stay 7-10 days and return to the Sanctuary many times over. We are very pleased to have achieved the accolade of being “A Top 4 Best Place to Stay in Lombok” from Lonely Planet. Our character is uniquely beautiful, with heaps of activities and services, quality food, natural surroundings and staff who are natural and friendly. We provide a retreat which is not overly manicured, but carefully nurtured so you can re-connect with yourself and the natural world. One expert guest yesterday thinks he found a very rare gecko species at Planet and he was astonished to see what may be the “largest accessible fossil site in south-east Asia”. We have made a lot of friends here, both guests and staff. We employ 100% of our staff from the immediate villages and surrounds and sometimes we need to be serious with them about doing their jobs for the sake of the guests. While they have no formal education, we provide training courses and hands-on checks of their work to ensure that you get the quality you deserve. About missing items on the menu, our head chef has been with us for more than 7 years, but she still forgets sometimes to order some food. Also, there are times when we simply cannot buy some ingredients in Lombok. Our menu has 99 options and mostly they are all available. We’ve had problems lately finding pumpkins for the pumpkin soup. Our rooms are airy, but this means that native fauna can sometimes join you in the rooms. Our favourites are the geckos, but the native bush rats sometimes expect quality accommodation. We kill them with a dehydrating food. They die slowly over 3 days. We don’t like doing that but the guests expect it. We are pleased to hear that the staff dealt with the problem for you. We are about to start building a new genre of room … beautiful but more like the “secure boxes” that appeal to guests who love nature but don’t want any nature in their rooms. They will be beautiful and multi-purpose with many eco-design features. Airy, when opened up, but electricity is approaching the district and so we are expecting to have A/C for those who feel the heat. Temperatures here during the season are around 28oC in the daytime and 24oC at night. This is a lot cooler than Bali because we don’t have the roads, cars and concrete jungle. Our extensive forests and the surrounding ocean keep the temperature down. We have our own tree nursery and will plant another 6,000 trees this wet season. It’s about 3oC warmer during the wet season, and more humid. About changing the towels in the massage room, we have 60 towels for that room. The massage ladies seem to be reluctant to listen to us about changing the towels and so we will talk more strongly to them, having seen your review. The massage staff provide a high quality massage and they try very hard to please the guests. About the price of the stay, we cannot reduce this because all income goes back out to Indonesia through salaries, purchases for the hotel and maintenance. All guests pay in advance to secure their bookings. Sometimes the reception staff may not produce a bill to the satisfaction of the guest and so they are trained to check with Management or Moira. We have recently had a few complaints about room cleaning and we have asked the relevant staff to find employment elsewhere. We listen and value the input from guests such as you. Behind the scenes, it is difficult to run such a high-quality experience for the guests, in a remote location. For example, we have no water or electricity provided to us. We have over 40 staff. As you said, they give you an extraordinary experience. They are natural, nice and very helpful. All are from a local village which has no real experience of full time work so we need to be alert to any poor behaviour throughout the busy season. They are rewarded well financially and the guests deserve their assistance. The season is nearly ending and so we take this opportunity to say thanks to all the wonderful people such as you who came to visit us. I am sure the staff would also love to say thanks for coming and making their jobs available.

Alrite, firstly, the location truth be told, is very remote, so I can understand if they need to charge extra to "cover their costs" as we were told. The view is beautiful, and the 2 surf spots just there are world class, with very good waves. There's plenty of gear they let you use and the staff do try and help when they can, but they can only do so much. Pool area is nice and the food is ok, with a fair selection. However, for the price you pay for the rooms, I would have to say that it is very overpriced. The rooms are thatched 'Eco-lodges' and bugs can get in left, right and centre. We are not 'high class' travellers, and have often stayed in low budget accomodation very happily. What we disliked the most, is the amount of rat droppings we would find in the room, and in and around the bathroom, basin, and surrounding area where we need to wash and brush our teeth. It surely cannot be that hard to keep it clean as all it needs is a daily wipe down, at least. The bathroom was in this state upon arrival, and more droppings appeared throughout our stay, although we never actually saw the rats. At night they do turn off the power, so after midnight your fan no longer works. The mosquito net over the bed is a necessity as without it the bed would become infested overnight with all sorts. So much so, that when we left, my boyfriend stuck his hand in his haversack and was stung by a small scorpion. He was alrite, but it was a painful sting. Surely some mosquito nets on the 'vents' and windows would go a long way to help with the insect problem and allow one to open some windows at nights to cool off, as without a fan or any sort of power it gets unbearably hot at night. Upon departure the staff insisted we had to leave at a certain time, even though it was too early for us, so transport to and from the place is restricted to the times which are convenient to them. The massages were good but the sheets and towels are not changed, which is rather unhygienic. On our last day bottled water had run out, which is a necessity anywhere, and was not replenished quickly. Water tanks are provided in each room but it is by no means cool. All in all, great surf, bad rooms, and extremely overpriced. We won't be staying here anytime soon.

Our philosophy has been natural and airy for the rooms. I sleep without a mosquito net throughout the long dry season. However, we’re pleased to announce a new genre of room for next year … beautiful but more like the “secure boxes” that appeal to guests who love nature but don’t want any nature in their rooms. They will be beautiful and multi-purpose with many eco-design features, airy when opened up. Electricity is approaching the district and so we are expecting to have A/C for those who feel the heat. Our extensive forests and the surrounding ocean keep the temperature down. About changing the towels in the massage room, we have 60 towels for that room. The massage ladies seem to be reluctant to change the towels and so we’ll talk more strongly to them and the guests can ask them also. The managers and staff are very keen to help during your stay. The massage ladies provide a high quality massage and they try very hard to please the guests. We don’t cool the complimentary water in the rooms but cold water is available in the restaurant. The transport is complex with many guest movements per day but we sometimes have to team up groups in the same vehicle when their flights are within an hour of each other. This is normally only needed during the busy months of August/September. Otherwise, we arrange special transport. We will look into your particular case if you would like to email your name and room. We have recently had a few complaints about room cleaning and we have asked the relevant staff to find employment elsewhere. Our apologies that the bathroom was not cleaned properly. Our prices are not based on the rooms alone. The package includes complimentary “all you want” meals, transfers, surf and snorkel boat, sport and surf equipment (snorkelling, skate bowl, windsurfers, Stand-Up Paddle Boards, kayaks, surf skis, surfboards), musical entertainment, local tours and massages. Unfortunately, there are numerous costs which are not incurred by the homestays (including taxes, permits, legal and lawyers, government requests, villagers and officials, electricity generators, water systems etc) and our essential Indonesian book-keeper says that we are unable to run this beautiful Resort at a lower price!

Our little family of three loved this place. The staff at Heaven on the planet are lovely - those manning the boat and gear (surfboards, kayaks, SUPs, etc), the massage therapists (gorgeous and skilled women), the restaurant staff. The view from the pool and restaurant is amazing (as I am sure you can see in the photos). The monkeys are mischievous but great to watch.

My husband is a surfer, I like to snorkel, kayak and our son is a busy 11 year old who is up for everything.

The natural environment at Ekas Bay is really special.

The accommodation is not very special at all - but as Kerry and Moira will say, book in advance and you'll get a better room. Do expect to find some insects in your room, don't expect a hot shower, deal with the heat from midnight to 7am with no power for the fan (I didn't think it was too bad), and expect that a monkey or two might fall through the thatching roof over your balcony with the wonderful view.

I would like to go back to HOTPlanet and was happy with the package deal - pretty good value. My advice to management would be to spruce up the place with nice new sheets and towels, continue to ensure holes in the room are patched up and make sure that the rooms are given a quick clean daily. Guests are paying a good price - so things do need to be of a bit of a higher standard.

The SUPs and Kayaks are in great condition.

After hearing about Heaven On The Planet for a while nothing prepared us for the remoteness and the challenges of developing a resort in this location. Kerry and Moira have invested widely in the area, the nearby village and HOTPlanet, supporting the local people and building up HOTPlanet facilities by making improvements year by year on a part of Lombok which has no mains power or water supply and is hours away from a city. Yes, it's hard to believe that in the year 2013 people still live without facilities many of us take for granted. The location perched atop the cliffs over Ekas Bay is picture perfect, often with distant views of Mt Rinjani which is quite spectacular - the aerial deck for dining is a primo spot. The food quality and choices were excellent and considering the logistics of supply we were more impressed. The bar & restaurant staff were friendly, helpful and the boat & beach boys very attentive and willing to offer service. Our family aren't surfers so we enjoyed the beach, snorkeling, SUPboards and the infinity pool plus the totally relaxing environment for reading and just chilling out. There are also various side trips Moira and Kerry can arrange if you want to experience Lombok beyond HOTPlanet - e.g. climbing Mt Rinjani. A great place to just getaway.

Room Tip: Cliff top has great views.

We stayed at ocean heaven in July 2013. The resort is on the beach with 5 villas and a fantastic and helpful staff. The food and drinks were amazingly good and the rooms spacious and the bed soft.
Although not surfers, although I might take it up after seeing the waves, it was peaceful to lounge back on the cabanas near the pool and quietly read. Monkeys came up to room and knocked on the windows or just played on the trees around the resort.
Kerry and Moira were wonderful hosts and Julie the new Physio was full of advice.
There are no fans, but with the shutters open and the net over the bed, it was the best sleeps we have had. Thank You

Third time for us staying here and every time we fall in love with it all over again! We NEVER tire of the views from our cliff-top chalet - the beauty, peace and simplicity of life here simply soaks right through us. Being greeted by Moira, Kerry and their ever-friendly and helpful staff make us feel as if we have come back to our 'second home'. Special hi to Supar, Usup, Ramsi, Maluk, Dan, Yaryar, Zen and the talented girls in the kitchen. Your warm, genuine smiles are always welcoming and refreshing.
For those of you considering coming here and still searching the reviews... If you want to experience a place far from the madding crowd that is still untouched by the trappings of tourism, immerse yourself in an environment that is still relatively untouched by human activity and yet provides all the necessary comforts of western living in a traditional Indo setting, then come to HotPlanet before it changes. ENJOY and APPRECIATE it's remoteness and the fact that there is not yet power as that is what keeps this place so peaceful and the beach and water so pristine (by keeping other developments away). Generator power provides everything necessary throughout the day and until midnight, providing all your needs and even free Wi-Fi in the restaurant and around the pool. Fresh, cool dam water is lovely to shower in and there is an endless supply of drinking water provided in your chalet.
You will meet like-minded people here from around the globe. Surfers and non-surfers, young and 'mature' couples, families with babies and families with teenagers - it's a real highlight of our visit to make friends and often become one big family, surfing, SUPping and snorkelling together. There's always something to celebrate and reason to have another beach party - this time it was David's 50th!
Food is always an important part of any stay and as many of us there were vegetarians, we had plenty to chose from - the menu is very extensive and healthy - I especially loved the freshly baked herb bread and the Indo selection. Even though we ate so much we ended our stay fitter, healthier and so much more relaxed than when we arrived.
My husband loved surfing two or three times each day while I enjoyed supping on the bay with the other girls (newly made friends) and Moira for up to three hours every morning - our sup trip to Ekas fishing village was a real highlight. We really looked forward our traditional Lombok massages in the afternoons to relieve sore muscles!
Plan ahead - book early and Moira will always try her best to accommodate your request for a particular villa. We have always asked for and stayed in Srikaya as the views are glorious. Other villas have different combinations of rooms for families, such as Jati and others are closer to the beach or pools. The kids will love the new water slide and the new infinity pool right in front of the restaurant was a breath-taking place to unwind at any time of day or night. We think the 'package' is a great deal when you consider that all your water sports are catered for including equipment, all meals (more than we can ever eat), massages, airport or Gili harbour transfers both ways, other sporting equipment including bicycles and village tours. Day trips are available at a small extra if you wish to see other parts of Lombok.
We're planning our next trip already - do it while you can and while this magical place exists or else you'll always regret it!

Room Tip: We love the cliff villas because of the breezes and the views - Srikaya for a couple. Jati house als...
