Each earthship is self contained, off the grid (although there are hybrid earthships). Each earthship has its own water source (from snow and rain), its own electricity source (from solar, wind, or a combination), and its own wastewater treatment (filtered greywater feeds an indoor greenhouse; "solar incubated" blackwater feeds outdoor planter boxes). None of the electricity is used for heating and cooling. The temperature inside is very comfortable. It was snowing outside, but inside, I was wearing a sleeveless top.
The Greater World Communtiy in Taos currently rents 2 earthships. We stayed in the Studio, which is actually a duplex. This one was built in 1995. It is a great way to experience the earthship concept in its infancy, and to see a structure that has settled with its surroundings. There are a couple of maintenance issues, but none that detracted from our experience (the chimney didn't draft well, the bathroom light and the oven didn't work, the filtered water drinking tap only trickled water). We did tour the other rental, The Phoenix. This huge earthship is still under construction, but enough is done that they rent part of it out. The Phoenix shows how the earthship concept has matured. It is really something that must be seen to be believed.
For me, staying in an earthship showed me the possibilities of Green Technology. Truly inspirational and innovative.
