“More a 3.5/5”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

This place was 3-4 times as expensive as some other places we stayed in Flores...so did it deliver value for money?

The villa was certainly very comfortable, and I would have no difficulty in believing that it is the most upmarket place to stay in Moni (it certainly was more upmarket than other places we stayed in Flores). It was a nice place to sit out on the balcony although in such an environment you must always be on the guard for the mosquitoes so some may not be able to fully relax!

The environment is green and countryside-like with buffalo grazing on the hill on the opposite side of the stream.

We didn't eat dinner here as we found the prices way out of line compared to even western eateries in Flores. We took the torch and walked to the hotel a couple of minutes back along the main road towards the village - that does decent, honest and cheap meals.

Overall I liked it, and it was a nice break from more basic places, but I didn't love it and I'm having difficulty saying that it is value for money compared to other places in Flores, which is why my mark cannot be any higher.

We are responding to the complaints re cost of our rooms and restaurant, which are not accepted.
ROOMS. For a hotel which has a unique, beautiful and peaceful situation in a valley facing Mount Kelimutu, we are cheap by any western standards. We offer total peace and quiet in lovely gardens with fantastic views. The comparison with other hotels in Flores is irelevant as we are unique and no other hotel could compete with the above.
This lodge was designed by an internationally acclaimed eco architect, and as the location is remote, building costs were very high. Our company ploughs 80% of its profits back into the environment through other lodges and thus we need to charge according to the above.

RESTAURANT. The profitability of our Restaurant is well below accepted international standards. Certainly there are cheaper establishments in the area and guests are most welcome to use them. None have our ambience.

We are very happy to respond to consructive criticism.

I stayed here for one night (only 5 hours) in a downstairs room below the check-in area (not one of the lodges). Location-wise this is a good place to stay to reach the Kelimutu volcanic crater lakes. The room itself was fine but the sheets on the bed were stained. The restaurant is decent but the service is slow if you don't order ahead and the breakfast wasn't very substantial. As another reviewer said, this is probably the best accommodation currently available in the area.

Room Tip: Book ahead to guarantee a lodge.

This report is from a guest who only stayed 5 hours in our room below the office. Our cottages and rooms above the restaurant are much more attractive in their views and situation. We do not believe that you can judge the experience of our Kelimutu on a short stay.

The accommodation was good, clean and spacy. We still hear the birds in the morning. Hot water works well. We were staying in the bungalow, which has an open air showroom. Cold especially during night time.
The only problem is, they serve poor breakfast. They only offer you 2 pieces of bread and egg or banana / pineapple pancake. No milk, no butter.

Since Moni is a small remote city, this accommodation is the best one that you can find here.
No complain from us while we're staying there.

Room Tip: they have 2 types of accommodation. 1 on the top of their restaurants (hotel rooms), and the other a...

My husband and I stayed there for 1 night in July 2012 in room n. 2, in the main building.
The room was good and clean and the bed was comfortable and with mosquito net; there was a safe, space for storage, drinking water provided. The bathroom was a little bit small, but there was hot water. There was a shared balcony with chairs from which you can have a wonderful view. Breakfast was not unforgettable: only banana pancake and fruit.
The only con was that over the glassy windows there were other open little windows and, as it gets cool and humid at night, sleeping was not so good and in the morning our clothes were damp!
In Moni we had dinner at Flores Sare Hotel: AVOID IT!! Terrible place and food, they brought us something different from what we ordered pretending we made a mistake and they were very unfriendly!

We thank this this guest for writing a report but feel our new Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge cannot be properly judged by a one night stay especially if the person arrives late and leaves early for the lakes. The unique location, the peace and quiet in beautiful gardens, the warm local staff, the many eco friendly management aspects with many other characteristics can be lost.

with thanks,

I like the idea if exo resort with solar panel, water system and all the garden. The room was very nice with mosquito net. Its important because so many mozy but what can you expect living in the midle of tropical rain forest. The service and staff were very helpfull and friendly also. Its very clise to the Kelimutu lake and so beautifull. Definetely recomended to stay here if you visit Moni. For the price is alright consider to the location and all the stuff should be transport from far realy understandable.

After booking 3 months in advance, once we got there, the rude "receptionist" told us that there was no place for us in the hotel. We showed him the confirmation email approved by his reservation manager. But he claimed that there was a problem with the email from Bali. This is obviously totally unacceptable. He was absolutely unhelpful and he didn't even apologize. We had not other choice but find ourselves another place at 7pm.
After sending a complain email to the reservation manager, at least we received a 20% discount on Bajo Eco Lodge in Labuanbajo.

After some thought, we will respond to this report by someone who did not even stay in our Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge. The Trip Advisor rating is based on persons who stay at hotels and this one star makes a mockery of the system as well as damaging the reputation of the lodge and its staff..

There is no doubt that we are at fault re confirmation of this booking in our internal management system from our Reservations in Bali to this Lodge in Flores (which has no proper telephone link). However, the guest received a large discount in our other Flores lodge in Labuan Bajo and an offer of help to find alternative accommodation in Moni by our Lodge Manager. (rejected). We apologised for our mistake at the time to this guest and gave suitable compensation.

The comments re our Manager have been looked into and recently this person was removed from his post. Your report played no role in this as we do not accept it.

We planned to stay 2 nights after having made an online reservation, but ended up staying one night simply because this is the most overpriced accommodation we stayed in. The staff are really nice and friendly. The rooms are lovely, although a bit musty after a lot of rain. The open-air bathroom isn't very convenient in a place where rainfall is not uncommon. A disadvantage is the location: far from town where all the nice views over the valley and mountains are. The "eco"-aspect refers to the use of one solar panel and the recycling of gray water, so not very convincing after all. If you can spare the money it is however the most classy place in town.

The following is important to expand on this report
(1) Firstly, we have 16 solar panels beside our office (not one as stated) and we are the only hotel in Eastern Indonesia that is powered by the sun. This was instqalled at considerable expense. Often there are blackouts in Moni and we are the only lights in the valley. We have one major solar hot water system above our Restaurant.and assume the writer mistook this as a solar cell. Other eco qualifications are total employment of local people, growing our own food, recycling all our gray water onto the gardens, recycling much pof our waste, support for local business, suport for the Kelimutu National Park and support of local guides.
(2) Secondly we are only 1km from the village of Moni. The walk into Moni on a sunny morning is a delight. I am 72 years and do it often from choice when staying at our lodge.
(3) Thirdly we are very proud of our outside but very private bathrooms. Most of our guest love them.
We are very proud of this lodge and its staff. It is suggested that guests should check their facts prior to writing reports that are incorrect and threaten the livlihoods of local people..
