We stayed here for four nights because of the conference, held in the convention center where the hotel is attached to, that my wife spoke at. It seemed to be in a relatively good location although Medan is so widespread there's really very few or no place to see on foot whichever hotel you stayed in. They did have a Gramedia in the premises, one of the country's largest bookstore chains and they did have some english titles.
You do have to get used to the security in every Indonesian hotel. According to the conference organizers, parking is good and very accessible. The lobby is spacious with lots of lounging areas for hotel guests and their visitors. The front desk staff were cordial and helpful.
The room itself is quite functional if not elaborate. The floors are tiled and the furniture is custom wood with laminate, with red color touches. However some of the smaller pieces have shoddy workmanship.
The complimentary breakfast is on the 3rd floor. It's a large place albeit without windows, with a spillover area for the very busy periods. They serve a very decent menu - egg station, breads, fruits, congee-noodles station, Indonesian, and the usual cereals, juices, etc.
I have to point out two minor negatives and one major problem. For the two minor issues, one, the staff try very hard but their English skill is way below what you would experience in a Jakarta hotel. Since this is our first time in Medan, I can't say if this is par for the Medan course or not. Second, the housekeeping staff overlook very basic stuff. One day, they never replaced the tissue roll and I had to drag a staff working on another room to bring one to my room. Another day, the housekeeper forgot to empty an overflowing trash can. Again, I had to pull one of the housekeepers working my floor to empty it.
But what was really upsetting was at check in when I asked for a second key card since I was with my wife who was speaking at a conference. They said they couldn't! And if they activated a second card, the first card was automatically deactivated. What? My wife and I travel 3 times a year and for each trip we usually use many hotels. And this was the first time I ever heard of such a limitation! Now it would be slightly tolerable if you could get into the elevator and push your floor. But the elevator required a key card swipe. So my wife and I had to always go up the elevator together. But since she was attending the conference and coming up to rest or prepare or do her toilet, and I was either in the room or lounging around or walking outside, we had to keep calling each other to synchronize when one of us would go up to the room. One time, My wife forgot to bring her mobile phone with her and she had to call me from the lobby courtesy phone to have me pick her up from downstairs. What if I was out? This was totally unacceptable. I would advise families or couples with different agenda to avoid this hotel, for this reason alone. I also have to lower my overall rating for this hotel.
